Such mass development can be favored by environmental factors. Temperature increases are expected to modify individual species responses that could shape future communities. We explored the impact of rising water temperature on the growth, phenology, and metabolism of six macrophytes belonging to two biogeographic origins (exotic, native) and two growth forms (submerged, emergent). From June to October, they were exposed to ambient temperatures and a 3 °C warming in outdoor mesocosms. Percent cover and canopy height were favored by warmer water for the exotic emergent Ludwigia hexapetala. Warming did not modify total final biomass for any of the species but led to a decrease in total soluble sugars for all, possibly indicating changes in carbon allocation. Three emergent species presented lower flavonol and anthocyanin contents under increased temperatures, suggesting lower investment in defense mechanisms and mitigation of the stress generated by autumn temperatures. Finally, the 3 °C warming extended and shortened flowering period for L. hexapetala and Myosotis scorpioides, respectively. The changes generated by increased temperature in outdoor conditions were heterogenous and varied depending on species but not on species biogeographic origin or growth form. Results suggest that climate warming could favor the invasiveness of L. hexapetala and impact the structure and composition of aquatic plants communities.Among different promising solutions, coupling closed-cell aluminium foam composite panels prepared by a powder metallurgical method with pore walls interconnected by microcracks, with low thermal conductivity phase change materials (PCMs), is one of the effective ways of increasing thermal conductivity for better performance of thermal storage systems in buildings. The internal structure of the foam formation, related to the porosity which decides the heat transfer rate, plays a significant role in the thermal energy storage performance. The dependence of the heat transfer characteristics on the internal foam structure is studied numerically in this work. The foamable precursor of 99.7% pure aluminium powder mixed with 0.15 wt.% of foaming agent, TiH2 powder, was prepared by compacting, and extruded to a volume of 20 × 40 × 5 mm. Two aluminium foam samples of 40 × 40 × 5 mm were examined with apparent densities of 0.7415 g/cm3 and 1.62375 g/cm3. The internal porous structure of the aluminium foam samples was modelled using X-ray tomography slices through image processing techniques for finite element analysis. The obtained numerical results for the heat transfer rate and effective thermal conductivity of the developed surrogate models revealed the influence of porosity, struts, and the presence of pore walls in determining the heat flow in the internal structure of the foam. Additionally, it was found that the pore size and its distribution determine the uniform heat flow rate in the entire foamed structure. The numerical data were then validated against the analytical predictions of thermal conductivity based on various correlations. It has been found that the simplified models of Bruggemann and Russell and the parallel-series model can predict the excellent effective thermal conductivity results of the foam throughout the porosity range. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most used, and as human exposure to such NPs increases, there is a growing need for analytical methods to identify and quantify nanoparticles present in the environment. Here we designed a detection strategy for AgNPs in seawater using surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). Three commercial AgNPs coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used to determine the relative impact of size (PVP-15nmAgNPs and PVP-100nmAgNPs) and aggregation degree (predefined Ag aggregates, PVP-50-80nmAgNPs) on the SERS-based detection method. The study of colloidal stability and dissolution of selected AgNPs into seawater was carried out by dynamic light scattering and UV-vis spectroscopy. We showed that PVP-15nmAgNPs and PVP-100nmAgNPs remained colloidally stable, while PVP-50-80nmAgNPs formed bigger aggregates. We demonstrated that the SERS-based method developed here have the capacity to detect and quantify single and aggregates of AgNPs in seawater. The size had almost no effect on the detection limit (2.15 ± 1.22 mg/L for PVP-15nmAgNPs vs. 1.51 ± 0.71 mg/L for PVP-100nmAgNPs), while aggregation caused an increase of 2.9-fold (6.08 ± 1.21 mg/L). Our results demonstrate the importance of understanding NPs transformation in seawater since this can influence the detection method performance.Background and Objectives. Fever is one of the most common presenting complaints in the Emergency Department (ED). This study aimed at evaluating the prognostic role of serum Procalcitonin (PCT) measurement among adult patients admitted to the ED with fever. Materials and Methods. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study including all consecutive patients admitted to ED with fever and subsequently hospitalized in a period of six-year (January 2014 to December 2019). Inclusion criteria were age > 18 years, fever (T ≥ 38 °C) or chills within 24 h from presentation to the ED as the main symptom, and availability of a PCT determination obtained 0.5 ng/mL was an independent risk factor for all-cause in-hospital death in both groups (HR 1.77 [1.27-2.48], and 1.80 [1.59-2.59], respectively). Conclusions. Among adult patients admitted with fever, the PCT assessment in ED could have reduced prognostic power for patients with a high suspicion of sepsis. On the other hand, it could be useful for sepsis rule-out for patients at low risk. In these latter patients, the prognostic role of PCT is higher for those with a final diagnosis of bloodstream infection.The prevalence of chronic pain in Spain is 15%. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on patients with chronic pain. A quasi-experimental design of repeated measures pre- and post-test (N = 57) was carried out at three hospitals from the province of Alicante. Self-reported assessment measurements of pain intensity, anxiety-depression symptoms, perception of health status, interference of pain on sleep, self-efficacy in pain, acceptance, and mindfulness attitude were included. The T-test indicates significant differences in intensity of present pain, mental quality of life, and depression (medium effect sizes), as well as in self-efficacy total score, symptom management and pain control (medium effect sizes), sleep disturbances and quantity of sleep (large effect sizes). MBCT is effective in reducing many symptoms in patients with chronic pain, although its maintenance needs to be further investigated.Cilia are microtubule-based hair-like organelles that extend from the cell surface. However, the existence and distribution of cilia in each organ and tissue at the postnatal stage in vivo remain largely unknown. In this study, we defined cilia distribution and arrangement and measured the ciliary lengths and the percentage of ciliated cells in different organs and tissues in vivo by using cilium dual reporter-expressing transgenic mice. Cilia were identified by the presence of ARL13B with an mCherry+ signal, and the cilium basal body was identified by the presence of Centrin2 with a GFP+ signal. Here, we provide in vivo evidence that chondrocytes and cells throughout bones have cilia. Most importantly, we reveal that 1. primary cilia are present in hepatocytes; 2. no cilia but many centrioles are distributed on the apical cell surface in the gallbladder, intestine, and thyroid epithelia; 3. 3-MA mouse cilia on the cerebral cortex are well oriented, pointing to the center of the brain; 4. ARL13B+ inclusion is evident in the thyroid and islets of Langerhans; and 5. approximately 2% of cilia show irregular movement in nucleus pulposus extracellular fluid. This study reveals the existence and distribution of cilia and centrioles in different tissues and organs, and provides new insights for further comprehensive study of ciliary function in these organs and tissues.The measurement of the Earth's Outgoing Longwave Radiation plays a key role in climate change monitoring. This measurement requires a compact wide-field-of-view camera, covering the 8-14 µm wavelength range, which is not commercially available. link2 Therefore, we present a novel thermal wide-field-of-view camera optimized for space applications, featuring a field of view of 140° to image the Earth from limb to limb, while enabling a high spatial resolution of 4.455 km at nadir. Our cost-effective design comprises three germanium lenses, of which only one has a single aspherical surface. It delivers a very good image quality, as shown by the nearly-diffraction-limited performance. Radiative transfer simulations indicate excellent performance of our camera design, enabling an estimate of the broadband Outgoing Longwave Radiation with a random relative error of 4.8%.Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment. link3 Unfortunately, only some patients benefit from these therapies. Thus, certain clinicopathological characteristics of the patients have been proposed as biomarkers of ICIs response. We assembled a retrospective cohort of 262 NSCLC patients treated with ICIs, compiled relevant clinicopathological characteristics, and studied their associations with treatment outcome using Cox proportional-hazards survival models. Additionally, we investigated the interrelations between clinicopathological features and devised a method to create a compendium associated with ICIs response by selecting those that provide non-redundant information. In multivariate analyses, ECOG performance status (hazard ratio (HR) 1.37 (95% CI 1.11 to 1.68), p less then 0.005), LDH (HR 1.24 (95% CI 1.03 to 1.48), p = 0.02)) and PD-L1 negativity were associated with decreased PFS (HR 1.92 (95% CI 1.03 to 3.58), p less then 0.04), whereas presentation of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) (HR 0.35 (95% CI 0.22 to 0.55, p less then 0.005) or females (HR 0.52 (95% CI 0.33 to 0.80, p less then 0.005) had longer progression-free survival. Additionally, numerous clinicopathological indicators were found to be interrelated. Thus, we searched for features that provide non-redundant information, and found the combination of LDH levels, irAEs, and gender to have a better association with ICIs treatment response (cross-validated c-index = 0.66). We concluded that several clinicopathological features showed prognostic value in our real-world cohort. However, some are interrelated, and compendiums of features should therefore consider these interactions. Joint assessment of LDH, irAEs, and gender may be a good prognostic compendium.
