Legionella's virulence is based on its ability to simultaneously hijack multiple molecular pathways of the host cell to ensure its fast replication and dissemination. Legionella usurps the host ubiquitin system through multiple effector proteins, using the advantage of both conventional and unconventional (phosphoribosyl-linked) ubiquitination, thus providing optimal conditions for its replication. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of L. pneumophila from medical, biochemical and molecular perspectives. We describe the clinical disease presentation, its diagnostics and treatment, as well as host-pathogen interactions, with the emphasis on the ability of Legionella to target the host ubiquitin system upon infection. The initial paradigm that non-coding is also non-functional was soon overturned and today the work to uncover the functions of non-coding DNA and RNA in human early embryogenesis has commenced. Early human development is characterized by large-scale changes in genomic activity and the transcriptome that are partly driven by the coordinated activation and repression of repetitive DNA elements scattered across the genome. Here we provide examples of recent novel discoveries of non-coding DNA and RNA interactions and mechanisms that ensure accurate non-coding activity during human maternal-to-zygotic transition and lineage segregation. These include studies on small and long non-coding RNAs, transposable element regulation, and RNA tailing in human oocytes and early embryos. Olfaction has recently been shown to shape homeostatic and maladaptive processes of energy intake and expenditure through neuronal circuits involving the medial basal hypothalamus. Reciprocally, gastrointestinal hormones, such as ghrelin and leptin, the secretion of which depends on satiety and adiposity levels, might also influence olfactory sensitivity to alter food-seeking behaviors. Here, in addition to reviewing recent updates on identifying these neuronal networks, we also discuss how bidirectional neurocircuits existing between olfactory and energy processing centers can become dysregulated during obesity.

To assess changes in adolescent visits with substance use disorders (SUDs) at children's hospitals during COVID-19.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adolescents (11-18years) with SUD diagnoses during a hospital visit in the Pediatric Health Information System. Study periods were defined as spring (03/15-05/31), summer (06/01-08/31), and fall (09/01-12/31), pre-COVID-19 (2017-2019), or during COVID-19 (2020). We summarized the change in weekly median visits and interquartile range (IQR) by characteristics and compared between the two periods (e.g., spring pre-COVID-19 [3/15-05/31/2017-2019] versus spring COVID-19 [3/15-05/31/2020]) using median regression.

There were 42,979 SUD visits (10,697 COVID-19; 32,282 pre-COVID-19) and 256 annual weekly median adolescent SUD visits [IQR 235, 280] pre-COVID-19 and 268 [IQR 245, 278] during COVID-19. The median number of weekly SUD visits increased by 14.3% during summer COVID-19 (median visits, [IQR] 272 [268, 278]) compared to pre-COVID-19 (median visits 237, IQR [216, 249]; p < .001) but did not significantly differ in spring (p= .091) or fall (p= .65) COVID-19.

Our findings suggest increased problematic adolescent substance use during summer COVID-19. Efforts to increase the identification and treatment of adolescent SUDs remain critical.

Adolescent dating abuse (ADA) is a public health issue. Adolescents may experience victimization, engage in perpetration, or both. This study explores the co-occurrences of ADA victimization and perpetration, specifically examining which experiences and behaviors are most likely to co-occur and whether these vary by gender.

Data came from a nationally representative sample of 807 adolescents between the ages of 11 and 21years in the United States who reported on at least one relationship in the past year through the Measure of Adolescent Relationship Harassment and Abuse (MARSHA). Using this sample, we applied network analysis to depict each ADA type as a "node" in a network where it was directly or indirectly associated with other types of victimization and perpetration. This network approach allowed for an empirical understanding of the patterns of victimization and perpetration co-occurrences.

Findings demonstrate multiple associations between victimization and perpetration, which were present to a greater extent among male adolescents. The results reveal clusters of co-occurring victimization and perpetration within the domains of (1) cyber and emotional ADA and (2) physical and emotional ADA. A diverse range of victimization experiences (e.g., sexual victimization) did not typically co-occur with perpetration.

The results suggest that ADA identification and specialized services require a nonbinary approach to address victims and perpetrators' trauma and abusive behaviors. Detection of certain ADA types, especially controlling behaviors within the cyber domain, can help identify and prevent a wide range of other ADA types that tend to co-occur.

High rates of adolescent physical inactivity and sedentary behavior have been reported worldwide, but the combined prevalence of languorous behavior (physical inactivity and/or sedentary behavior) may more accurately reflect just how few adolescents meet World Health Organization recommendations.

We analyzed nationally representative data from 325,219 students in 80 countries that participated in the Global School-based Student Health Survey between 2009 and 2018. Students were classified as physically inactive if they reported engaging in moderate or vigorous physical activity less than 60minutes daily. The impact of COVID-19 on swallowing function is not well understood. Despite low hospital admission rates in Australia, the virus and subsequent treatment affects swallow function in those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) treatment. As such, the current pandemic provides a unique opportunity to describe swallowing function and outline dysphagia characteristics and trajectory of recovery for a series of cases across NSW.

The aims of this study were to describe (i) physiological characteristics of swallowing dysfunction and (ii) pattern of swallowing recovery and outcomes, in ICU patients with COVID-19.

All patients admitted to 17 participating NSW Health ICU sites over a 12-month period (March 2020-March 2021), diagnosed with COVID-19, treated with the aim for survival, and seen by a speech pathologist for clinical swallowing examination during hospital admissionwere considered for inclusion. Demographic, critical care airway management, speech pathology treatment, and swallowing outcome data were collected.
