Importantly, MitoTEMPO treatment prevented radiation-induced decrease in STIM1, consequently protecting store-operated Ca2+ entry which is critical for saliva secretion. Together, these findings identify the initial increase in ROSmt, that is induced by irradiation, as a critical driver of persistent salivary gland hypofunction. We suggest that the mitochondrially targeted antioxidant, MitoTEMPO, can be potentially important in preventing IR-induced salivary gland dysfunction. The continuously increased existence of contaminants such as chemical and biological mainly dye, bacteria, and heavy metals ions (HMI) in water bodies has increased environmental concern due to their hostile effects on living things. Therefore, there is necessity to be developed newer materials that skirmishes such environmental menace. The present works focus on the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional (3D) polymer-metal-carbon (3D-PMC) framework for the exclusion of contaminants (chemical and biological) from water bodies. Initially, polyurethane (PU) foam was treated with nitric acid and used as a framework for the development of 3D-PMC materials. The copper nanosheet (Cu-NS) was deposited onto the functionalized PU foam to produce Cu-NS-PU material. The mechanically exfoliated graphene was mixed with chitosan to produce a graphene-chitosan homogenous suspension. The produce homogenous suspension was deposited Cu-NS-PU for the development of the 3D-PMC framework. The prepared 3D-PMC framework was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-rays diffraction (XRD) analysis. The prepared 3D-PMC framework was subjected to various adsorption parameters to assess the sorption ability of the material. The prepared 3D-PMC framework was effectively used for the removal of chromium (Cr) metal ions and Congo-red (CR) dye from the water system. The synthesis of the 3D-PMC framework is simple, novel, cost-effective, and economically viable. Therefore, the prepared 3D-PMC framework has the potential to be used as a filter assembly in water treatment technologies.Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent and diverse, allowing insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. A common consequence of long-term associations is a considerable reduction in symbiont genome size likely influenced by the radical shift in selective pressures as a result of the less variable environment within the host. While several of these cases can be found across distinct insect species, most examples provide a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of genome reduction. Stink bugs (Pentatomidae) contain inherited gamma-proteobacterial symbionts in a modified organ in their midgut and are an example of a long-term nutritional symbiosis, but multiple cases of new symbiont acquisition throughout the history of the family have been described. We sequenced the genomes of 11 symbionts of stink bugs with sizes that ranged from equal to those of their free-living relatives to less than 20%. Comparative genomics of these and previously sequenced symbionts revealed initial stages of genome reduction including an initial pseudogenization before genome reduction, followed by multiple stages of progressive degeneration of existing metabolic pathways likely to impact host interactions such as cell wall component biosynthesis. Amino acid biosynthesis pathways were retained in a similar manner as in other nutritional symbionts. Stink bug symbionts display convergent genome reduction events showing progressive changes from a free-living bacterium to a host-dependent symbiont. This system can therefore be used to study convergent genome evolution of symbiosis at a scale not previously available.Few studies have demonstrated an association of sarcopenia-associated body measurements with chronic diseases through a comprehensive methodology. This study aims to examine the relationship between sarcopenia-associated body measurements and chronic diseases. This is a cohort study. We recruited 316 community dwellers, including 76 patients with sarcopenia and 240 controls, and obtained their body measurements associated with sarcopenia. We collected three-dimensional anthropometric body-surface measurements from 11,158 participants during 2000-2008 and followed up this cohort for 15 years to examine the association of these measurements with the risk of chronic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), heart disease, and nephrotic syndrome. Univariate analysis, canonical correlation, and Cox regression analysis were performed to explore the associations. Decreased waist width, upper left arm circumference, and left thigh circumference were significantly associated with sarcopenia. The adverse body measure score (ABMS) was derived by combining significant measurements, namely left upper arm circumference, waist width, and left thigh circumference, and used to predict the risk of hypertension, T2DM, heart diseases, and nephrotic syndrome. A positive association was observed between the ABMS and chronic diseases. Considering the first quartile of the ABMS as a reference, we determined hazard ratios of 2.259, 2.495, 1.332, and 1.595 for hypertension, T2DM, heart disease, and nephrotic syndrome, respectively, in the fourth quartile. Chronic diseases were more strongly associated with the ABMS than with sarcopenia-related body measurements alone. A high ABMS, which includes higher upper arm circumference, higher waist width, and lower thigh circumference, can significantly predict chronic diseases.Cerebral perfusion is determined by segmental perfusion pressure for the intracranial compartment (SPP), which is lower than cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) because of extracranial stenosis. We used the Thevenin model of Starling resistors to represent the intra-extra-cranial compartments, with outflow pressures ICP and Pe, to express SPP = Pd-ICP = FFR*CPP-Ge(1 - FFR)(ICP-Pe). Here Pd is intracranial inflow pressure in the circle of Willis, ICP-intracranial pressure; FFR = Pd/Pa is fractional flow reserve (Pd scaled to the systemic pressure Pa), Ge-relative extracranial conductance. The second term (cerebral venous steal) decreases SPP when FFR Pe. We verified the SPP equation in a bench of fluid flow through the collapsible tubes. We estimated Pd, measuring pressure in the intra-extracranial collateral (supraorbital artery) in a volunteer. To manipulate extracranial outflow pressure Pe, we inflated the infraorbital cuff, which led to the Pd increase and directional Doppler flow signal reversal in the supraorbital artery. SPP equation accounts for the hemodynamic effect of inflow stenosis and intra-extracranial flow diversion, and is a more precise perfusion pressure target than CPP for the intracranial compartment. Manipulation of intra-extracranial pressure gradient ICP-Pe can augment intracranial inflow pressure (Pd) and reverse intra-extracranial steal.Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is a subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) that is associated with elevated interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression, resistance to chemotherapy, and increased mortality. Although bevacizumab (Bev) is a widely used anti-angiogenic agent for EOC, the efficacy of Bev and the role of IL-6 in modulating angiogenesis in OCCC are unknown. We performed tube formation assays using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) cultured in OCCC cell-conditioned medium and using cells directly co-cultured with OCCC cells. We observed that IL-6 inhibition significantly mitigated the ability of Bev to impede tube formation in both cases. Furthermore, IL-6 blockade disrupted the anti-angiogenic efficacy of Bev and its concomitant anti-tumor activity. In addition, IL-6 inhibition resulted in a significant increase in angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) secretion and decreased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. Clinical specimens also exhibited this reciprocal relationship between IL-6 and Ang1 expression. Finally, depletion of Ang1 abrogated the effects of IL-6 inhibition on Bev activity, demonstrating that IL-6 supports the anti-angiogenic activity of Bev by suppressing Ang1 expression and promoting dependence on VEGF for angiogenesis. Cerdulatinib Altogether, our data suggest that OCCC tumors with high IL-6 levels are candidates for Bev therapy. While climate change severely affects some aquatic ecosystems, it may also interact with anthropogenic factors and exacerbate their impact. In dry climates, dams can cause hydrological drought during dry periods following a great reduction in dam water discharge. However, impact of these severe hydrological droughts on lotic fauna is poorly documented, despite climate change expected to increase drought duration and intensity. We document here how dam water discharge was affected by climate variability during 2011-2018 in a highly modified watershed in northeastern Algeria, and how an endemic endangered lotic damselfly, Calopteryx exul Selys, 1853 (Odonata Calopterygidae), responded to hydrological drought episodes. Analysis was based on a compilation of data on climate (temperature, precipitation, and drought index), water dam management (water depth and discharge volume and frequency), survey data on C. exul occurrence, and capture-mark-recapture (CMR) of adults. The study period was characterized by a severe drought between 2014 and 2017, which led to a lowering of dam water depth and reduction of discharge into the river, with associated changes in water chemistry, particularly during 2017 and 2018. These events could have led to the extirpation of several populations of C. exul in the Seybouse River (Algeria). CMR surveys showed that the species was sensitive to water depth fluctuations, avoiding low and high water levels (drought and flooding). The study shows that climate change interacts with human water requirements and affects river flow regimes, water chemistry and aquatic fauna. As drought events are likely to increase in the future, the current study highlights the need for urgent new management plans for lotic habitats to maintain this species and possible others. The optimization of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cell efficiency is essential since it leads to a significant increase in the output power. Typically, the optimization of In0.53Ga0.47As TPV cell has been limited to single variable such as the emitter thickness, while the effects of the variation in other design variables are assumed to be negligible. The reported efficiencies of In0.53Ga0.47As TPV cell mostly remain less then 15%. Therefore, this work develops a multi-variable or multi-dimensional optimization of In0.53Ga0.47As TPV cell using the real coded genetic algorithm (RCGA) at various radiation temperatures. RCGA was developed using Visual Basic and it was hybridized with Silvaco TCAD for the electrical characteristics simulation. Under radiation temperatures from 800 to 2000 K, the optimized In0.53Ga0.47As TPV cell efficiency increases by an average percentage of 11.86% (from 8.5 to 20.35%) as compared to the non-optimized structure. It was found that the incorporation of a thicker base layer with the back-barrier layers enhances the separation of charge carriers and increases the collection of photo-generated carriers near the band-edge, producing an optimum output power of 0.
