A sample purification protocol overcoming potential matrix effects caused by coagulants and flocculants was developed and validated. MP was analysed using micro-Raman spectroscopy. MP occurrence determined for the Warnow river was compared with in situ reference sampling using an established pumping and filtration system at relatively stable flow conditions. As result, the number of MP particles derived from treatment sludge was extrapolated to 196 ± 42 m-3 for the Warnow river and is statistically insignificantly different from 233 ± 36 m-3 identified by conventional water sampling. In addition, the polymer distribution and particles shape indicated the validity of the integrative concept. Consequently, the determination of MP abundance for freshwater systems based on DWTP treatment sludge represents an adequate method to estimate MP concentrations in flowing waters in an integrative way.
The reference values to determine vitamin A and D deficiency may vary based on ethnicity, age, and region of residence. The aim of this study was to determine the reference interval of circulating vitamin A and D levels among Iranian children and adolescents based on sex, age, and region of residence.
This nationwide cross-sectional study was performed with 2596 students 7 to 18 y of age from the CASPIAN-V (Childhood and Adolescence Surveillance and Prevention of Adult Non- communicable disease) study. A parametric method was used to define the age-specific reference values by obtaining smooth centile curves and explicit formulae for the centile estimates and SD scores for both sexes and regions of residence.
Significant differences were found between the residents of rural and urban regions in terms of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and retinol concentration (P < 0.05). Boys (27 ± 8 versus 26.04 ± 10, P=0.009). Children ages 7 to 12 y had higher serum 25(OH)D concentration than 13- to 18-y-old adolescents (26.96 ± 8 versus 26.04 ± 10, P=0.007). The estimated reference interval for circulating 25(OH)D levels corresponding to the range between the 5th and 95th percentiles were 11.45 to 48.40 ng/mL in boys and 9.51 to 47.69 ng/mL in girls. Estimated reference intervals for serum retinol concentration among boys and girls corresponding to the 5th and 95th percentiles were 0.58 to 3.38 and 0.58 to 4.52, respectively. There were significant variations in both retinol and 25(OH)D concentrations across different age groups.
This study established the reference intervals for circulating 25(OH)D and retinol levels in Iranian adolescents and children in different age groups based on sex and region.
This study established the reference intervals for circulating 25(OH)D and retinol levels in Iranian adolescents and children in different age groups based on sex and region.
Colostrum is the first secretion produced by the mammary glands and is present through the seventh day after birth. Colostrum has important immunomodulatory components and protective factors that contribute to the protection and development of newborns. The oropharyngeal administration of colostrum (OAC) has been proposed as a potential nutritional option for very low-birth-weight (VLBW) newborns (<1500 g). This study aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes of VLBW infants receiving OAC.
This is a retrospective longitudinal study with nonprobability sampling of VLBW infants on the OAC protocol. VLBW infants for whom no OAC data were available, who received no dose, or who died within the first 7 d of life were excluded. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare quantitative variables and the Wilcoxon test to assess the evolution of anthropometric values with a significance level of 5% (P < 0.05).
Enteral nutritional therapy was commenced after 1 d (median 1 d; interquartile range [IQR], 1-1 d). Full enteral feeding was achieved after 11 d (median 11.0 d; IQR, 9.0-16.0 d). Birth weight was recovered after 11 d (median 11 d; IQR, 7.0-14.0 d). OAC was commenced at 3 d of life, and 32.5 doses (IQR, 21.0-44.0 d) were given in total. Crenolanib molecular weight There were significant differences in the evolution of anthropometric characteristics during hospitalization, with a tendency to recover birth weight more quickly the higher the number of doses administered (P=0.07). Time to full enteral feeding was significantly longer and time to recovery of birth weight significantly shorter when OAC was commenced ≤3 d after birth (P=0.023).
OAC was associated with a shorter time to recover birth weight and time to full enteral feeding.
OAC was associated with a shorter time to recover birth weight and time to full enteral feeding.
Chronic inflammation and pelvic adhesion play a critical role in endometriosis-related infertility. Research studies suggest that TGF-β superfamily members, such as soluble endoglin (sEng), growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) and tumor growth factor-beta (TGF-β1) contribute to the regulation of inflammation, angiogenesis and cell adhesion. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between the concentrations of these TGF-β-related members and the clinical parameters of infertile women with endometriosis.
Sixty-five infertile women who underwent laparoscopy were divided into two groups in this study those who had endometriosis (n = 33) and control subjects with benign gynecologic disorders (n = 32). The levels of TGF-β- related members in peritoneal fluid and serum were evaluated by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical and hematological parameters were documented and analyzed.
Endometriosis cases had significantly higher levels of sEng, GDF-15 and TGF-β1 in perandidate biomarker for endometriosis severity. Further studies are warranted to investigate the role and regulation of these molecules in endometriosis.Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a major endocrine disorder, affects the reproductive function of a woman, along with an association with metabolic conditions like insulin resistance and inflammation. The inflammatory nature of PCOS is much debated over, owing to numerous cases of elevation in cytokine levels. Studies have shown the beneficiary effect of Gamma-Linolenic acid (GLA) in reducing inflammation related to many conditions such as atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, arterial disease, obesity, and even PCOS. The study aims at assessing the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the ovary and Peri-ovarian adipose tissue (POAT) of the Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) induced PCOS rat model. Further, this study also evaluates the effect of γ-linolenic Acid (GLA) on these cytokines in POAT. Female Wistar rats were subcutaneously injected with 60 mg/kg DHEA daily for 28 days. These PCOS-induced rats were then orally administered with 50 mg/kg GLA for 14 days. The gene expression of cytokines was assessed by Real Time-PCR.
