Dietary quality is an important factor influencing prediabetes, but few studies have applied the Chinese Diet Balance Index (DBI-16) to evaluate the dietary quality of individuals with prediabetes and explore the associations between dietary quality and prediabetes. In our study, the lower-bound score, higher-bound score and diet quality distance, were respectively calculated to assess dietary quality based on each food group. Logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of unfavorable dietary quality leading to prediabetes in every subgroup. The results were shown that individuals with prediabetes had excessive intake in the categories of cereals, salt and inadequate intake in vegetables, fish and diet variety than participants without prediabetes (all P  less then  0.01). Unfavourable dietary quality was significantly associated with an increased risk of prediabetes (OR 1.45, 95%CI 1.29-1.63), especially among the subjects who lived in rural areas (OR 1.63, 95%CI 1.25-1.76), those who had abdominal obesity (OR 1.58, 95%CI 1.36-1.85), those who smoked (OR 1.58, 95%CI 1.30-1.93), those who consumed alcohol (OR 1.57, 95%CI 1.28-1.93) and those who did not drink tea (OR 1.64, 95%CI 1.42-1.88). In Conclusion, unfavourable dietary quality was significantly associated with an increased risk of prediabetes. An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper.Upper airway obstruction can lead to growth retardation by unclear mechanisms. We explored the effect of upper airway obstruction in juvenile rats on whole-body energy balance, growth plate metabolism, and growth. We show that after seven weeks, obstructed animals' ventilation during room air breathing increased, and animals grew less due to abnormal growth plate metabolism. Increased caloric intake in upper airway-obstructed animals did not meet increased energy expenditure associated with increased work of breathing. Decreased whole-body energy balance induced hindrance of bone elongation following obstruction removal, and array pathways regulating growth plate development and marrow adiposity. This is the first study to show that rapidly growing animals cannot consume enough calories to maintain their energy homeostasis, leading to an impediment in growth in the effort to save energy.Microwave absorption properties were systematically studied for double-layer carbon black/epoxy resin (CB) and Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4/epoxy resin (F) nanocomposites in the frequency range of 8 to 18 GHz. The Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via high energy ball milling with subsequent sintering while carbon black was commercially purchased. The materials were later incorporated into epoxy resin to fabricate double-layer composite structures with total thicknesses of 2 and 3 mm. The CB1/F1, in which carbon black as matching and ferrite as absorbing layer with each thickness of 1 mm, showed the highest microwave absorption of more than 99.9%, with minimum reflection loss of -33.8 dB but with an absorption bandwidth of only 2.7 GHz. Double layer absorbers with F1/CB1(ferrite as matching and carbon black as absorbing layer with each thickness of 1 mm) structure showed the best microwave absorption performance in which more than 99% microwave energy were absorbed, with promising minimum reflection loss of -24.0 dB, along with a wider bandwidth of 4.8 GHz and yet with a reduced thickness of only 2 mm.Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by increased uptake and accumulation of lipids in hepatocytes. Simple steatosis may progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with inflammation, hepatocellular injury and fibrosis. CCN1 is an important matrix protein that regulates cell death and promotes immune cell adhesion and may potentially control this process. The role of CCN1 in NASH remains unclear. We investigated the role of CCN1 in the pathogenesis of steatohepatitis. CCN1 upregulation was found to be closely related with steatosis in patients with NASH, obese mice and a FFA-treated hepatocyte model. Controlling the expression of CCN1 in murine NASH models demonstrated that CCN1 increased the severity of steatosis and inflammation. From the sequence results, we found that fatty acid metabolism genes were primarily involved in the MCD mice overexpressing CCN1 compared to the control. Then, the expression of fatty acid metabolism genes was determined using a custom-designed pathway-focused qPCR-based gene expression array. Expression analysis showed that CCN1 overexpression significantly upregulated the expression of fatty acid metabolism-associated genes. In vitro analysis revealed that CCN1 increased the intracellular TG content, the pro-inflammatory cytokines and the expression level of apoptosis-associated proteins in a steatosis model using murine primary hepatocytes. We identified CCN1 as an important positive regulator in NASH.Local and global changes associated with anthropogenic activities are impacting marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Macroalgae, especially habitat-forming species like kelp, play critical roles in temperate coastal ecosystems. However, their abundance and distribution patterns have been negatively affected by warming in many regions around the globe. Along with global change, coastal ecosystems are also impacted by local drivers such as eutrophication. The interaction between global and local drivers might modulate kelp responses to environmental change. This study examines the regulatory effect of NO3- on the thermal plasticity of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera. To do this, thermal performance curves (TPCs) of key temperature-dependant traits-growth, photosynthesis, NO3- assimilation and chlorophyll a fluorescence-were examined under nitrate replete and deplete conditions in a short-term incubation. We found that thermal plasticity was modulated by NO3- but different thermal responses were observed among traits. Our study reveals that nitrogen, a local driver, modulates kelp responses to high seawater temperatures, ameliorating the negative impacts on physiological performance (i.e. growth and photosynthesis). check details However, this effect might be species-specific and vary among biogeographic regions - thus, further work is needed to determine the generality of our findings to other key temperate macroalgae that are experiencing temperatures close to their thermal tolerance due to climate change.
