The enhanced resistance against crack propagation in the LCF regime is attributed to the prevalent stress redistribution, crack deflection, and crack bridging mechanisms. The fatigue properties of different Al/Ti/Steel-LMC systems show the potential of LMCs in terms of an appropriate selection of constituents in combination with an optimized architecture. The results are also discussed under the aspect of tailored lightweight applications subjected to cyclic loading. It is well known that the surface topography of a part can affect its function as well as its mechanical performance. In this context, we report on the surface modification of additive manufactured components made of Titanium 64 and Scalmalloy®, using Direct Laser Interference Patterning technique. In our experiments, a nanosecond-pulsed near-infrared laser source with a pulse duration of 10 ns was used. By varying the process parameters, periodic structures with different depths and associated roughness values are produced. Additionally, the influence of the resultant morphological characteristics on the wettability behaviour of the fabricated textures is investigated by means of contact angle measurements. The results demonstrated a reduction of the surface roughness of the additive manufactured parts (in the order of some tens of micrometres) and simultaneously the production of well-defined micro-patterns (in the micrometre range), which allow the wettability of the surfaces from 26° and 16° up to 93° and 131° to be tuned for Titanium 6Al 4V and Al-Mg-Sc (Scalmalloy®), respectively. This review consists of a compilation of synthesis methods and several properties of borohydrides beyond Groups I and II, i.e., transition metals, main group, lanthanides, and actinides. The reported properties include crystal structure, decomposition temperature, ionic conductivity, photoluminescence, etc., when available. The compiled properties reflect the rich chemistry and possible borohydrides' application in areas such as hydrogen storage, electronic devices that require an ionic conductor, catalysis, or photoluminescence. At the end of the review, two short but essential sections are included a compilation of the decomposition temperature of all reported borohydrides versus the Pauling electronegativity of the cations, and a brief discussion of the possible reactions occurring during diborane emission, including some strategies to reduce this inconvenience, particularly for hydrogen storage purposes. The use of human dental pulp stromal cells (hDPSCs) has gained increasing attention as an alternative stem cell source for bone tissue engineering. The modification of the cells' epigenetics has been found to play an important role in regulating differentiation, with the inhibition of histone deacetylases 3 (HDAC3) being linked to increased osteogenic differentiation. This study aimed to induce epigenetic reprogramming using the HDAC2 and 3 selective inhibitor, MI192 to promote hDPSCs osteogenic capacity for bone regeneration. MI192 treatment caused a time-dose-dependent change in hDPSC morphology and reduction in viability. Additionally, MI192 successfully augmented hDPSC epigenetic functionality, which resulted in increased histone acetylation and cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase. MI192 pre-treatment exhibited a dose-dependent effect on hDPSCs alkaline phosphatase activity. Quantitative PCR and In-Cell Western further demonstrated that MI192 pre-treatment significantly upregulated hDPSCs osteoblast-related gene and protein expression (alkaline phosphatase, bone morphogenic protein 2, type I collagen and osteocalcin) during osteogenic differentiation. Importantly, MI192 pre-treatment significantly increased hDPSCs extracellular matrix collagen production and mineralisation. As such, for the first time, our findings show that epigenetic reprogramming with the HDAC2 and 3 selective inhibitor MI192 accelerates the osteogenic differentiation of hDPSCs, demonstrating the considerable utility of this MSCs engineering approach for bone augmentation strategies.Benzene carcinogenic ability has been reported, and chronic exposure to benzene can be one of the risk elements for solid cancers and hematological neoplasms. Benzene is acknowledged as a myelotoxin, and it is able to augment the risk for the onset of acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, aplastic anemia, and lymphomas. Possible mechanisms of benzene initiation of hematological tumors have been identified, as a genotoxic effect, an action on oxidative stress and inflammation and the provocation of immunosuppression. this website However, it is becoming evident that genetic alterations and the other causes are insufficient to fully justify several phenomena that influence the onset of hematologic malignancies. Acquired epigenetic alterations may participate with benzene leukemogenesis, as benzene may affect nuclear receptors, and provoke post-translational alterations at the protein level, thereby touching the function of regulatory proteins, comprising oncoproteins and tumor suppressor proteins. DNA hypomethylation correlates with stimulation of oncogenes, while the hypermethylation of CpG islands in promoter regions of specific tumor suppressor genes inhibits their transcription and stimulates the onset of tumors. The discovery of the systems of epigenetic induction of benzene-caused hematological tumors has allowed the possibility to operate with pharmacological interventions able of stopping or overturning the negative effects of benzene.Clinical outcomes of conventional drug combinations are not ideal due to high toxicity to healthy tissues. Cisplatin (CDDP) is the standard component for many cancer treatments, yet its principal dose-limiting side effect is nephrotoxicity. Thus, CDDP is commonly used in combination with other drugs, such as the autophagy inhibitor chloroquine (CQ), to enhance tumor cell killing efficacy and prevent the development of chemoresistance. In addition, nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems can overcome chemotherapy limitations, decreasing side effects and increasing tumor accumulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of CQ and CDDP against tumor and non-tumor cells when used in a combined treatment. For this purpose, two types of micelles based on Pluronic® F127 hybrid dendritic-linear-dendritic block copolymers (HDLDBCs) modified with polyester or poly(esteramide) dendrons derived from 2,2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (HDLDBC-bMPA) or 2,2'-bis(glycyloxymethyl)propionic acid (HDLDBC-bGMPA) were explored as delivery nanocarriers. Our results indicated that the combined treatment with HDLDBC-bMPA(CQ) or HDLDBC-bGMPA(CQ) and CDDP increased cytotoxicity in tumor cells compared to the single treatment with CDDP. Encapsulations demonstrated less short-term cytotoxicity individually or when used in combination compared to the free drugs. However, and more importantly, a low degree of cytotoxicity against non-tumor cells was maintained, even when drugs were given simultaneously.Approximately 60% of the UK's leisure horses are kept at livery yards under the management and oversight of a livery yard owner or manager (LYO/M), yet their role has received little research attention. This study used the COVID-19 pandemic as a lens through which to view LYO/Ms' decisions around equine care and management at a time when changes to usual practice were necessary. Qualitative research methods were used. Up to 3 interviews were conducted with 24 different LYO/Ms over nine months (n = 48). Discussion threads from open-access UK discussion fora were also analysed. All data were anonymised and analysed using a Grounded Theory methodology. Prior to the pandemic, equine care and management practices varied greatly across yards, and yard cultures were a product of LYO/Ms' construction of good equine care, their business model, and the need to balance human and equine contentment. The role of the LYO/M was to maintain an equilibrium between those interlinked factors. During the pandemic, LYO/Ms adopted new measures designed to influence the movement of horse owners and other people on yards to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission. During this time, LYO/Ms reported prioritising equine wellbeing by limiting change to equine routines and management wherever possible. Instead of altering equine management, there was an expectation that the lives of humans would be moulded and re-shaped to fit with the government COVID-19 guidelines. These results highlight the importance of routines, traditions and cultures in each individual yard. Maintaining the standard of care for the horse was prioritised regardless of who provided that care.Cognitive impairment (CI) is a remarkable feature in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS). The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) is increasingly used to explore CI in MS. Recently, a four-point worsening on the SDMT score has been demonstrated to correlate with a clinically meaningful cognitive worsening in adult MS. We conducted a post hoc analysis of a randomized computer-assisted rehabilitation trial for attention impairment in POMS to test the clinical meaningfulness of the changes in SDMT scores at the end of the trial (delta SDMT). A four-point SDMT cut-off was applied. POMS patients exposed to specific computer training (ST) and non-specific training (nST) were compared. Data of 16 POMS (9 females, age 15.75 ± 1.74 years) patients were analyzed. At the end of the trial, 25% of patients reported no clinically significant changes (-3 to 3), 12.5% a clinically significant worsening (≤-4) and 62.5% a clinically significant improvement (≥4) in the delta SDMT. The proportion of patients reporting a clinically meaningful improvement was significantly (p = 0.008) higher (100%) in patients exposed to ST in comparison to those (25%) exposed to nST. The use of the four-point SDMT cut-off may be useful to assess the clinical meaningfulness of results from cognitive rehabilitation trials. We report herein a study on the alcohol-free, ring-opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in THF, catalyzed by 1,5,7-triazabicyclo [4.4.0] ec-5-ene (TBD) with ratios nTBD/nTMC ranging between 1/20 and 1/400. In all cases, the reaction proceeds very rapidly, even faster than in the presence of alcohol initiators, and provides PTMC with molecular weights up to Mn = 34,000 g mol-1. Characterization of the obtained PTMC samples by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, triple detection size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy reveals the presence of both linear and cyclic polymer chains. The aim of this paper was the preparation and investigation of the wound healing properties of four topical formulations based on natural polymers such as collagen, chitosan, lyophilized egg white, and a mixture of them. The therapeutic assessment of these four ointments was carried out in vivo on the incision, excision, and thermal burn wounds induced on Wistar rats. The treatment was applied topically on wounds once a day, for 21 days. The experimental results were analyzed from a clinical and histopathological point of view. The rheological characterization of the topical formulations was also performed in order to verify their spreadability and structural stability. All ointments had a positive effect on wound contraction and re-epithelization processes, but the one based on total polymers had a significant healing potential on the designed cutaneous lesions due to its synergistic effects.
