The successional dynamics and assembly processes of bacterial and fungal communities were compared on a glacier foreland in the maritime Antarctic across the ~10-year soil-age gradient from bare soil to sparsely vegetated area. Bacterial communities shifted more rapidly than fungal communities in response to glacial retreat; species turnover (primarily the transition from glacier- to soil-favouring taxa) contributed greatly to bacterial beta diversity, but this pattern was less clear in fungi. Bacterial communities underwent more predictable (more deterministic) changes along the soil-age gradient, with compositional changes paralleling the direction of changes in soil physicochemical properties following deglaciation. In contrast, the compositional shift in fungal communities was less associated with changes in deglaciation-induced changes in soil geochemistry and most fungal taxa displayed mosaic abundance distribution across the landscape, suggesting that the successional dynamics of fungal communities are largely governed by stochastic processes. A co-occurrence network analysis revealed that biotic interactions between bacteria and fungi are very weak in early succession. Taken together, these results collectively suggest that bacterial and fungal communities in recently deglaciated soils are largely decoupled from each other during succession and exert very divergent trajectories of succession and assembly under different selective forces.
Many medical specialties have found publication misrepresentation in residency and fellowship applications, but pediatric anesthesia fellowship application data is lacking.
We sought to determine the prevalence of publication misrepresentation among pediatric anesthesia fellowship applications.
In this retrospective cohort study, fellowship applications to Stanford University's pediatric anesthesiology fellowship program from 2009 to 2019 were reviewed. Only peer-reviewed journal articles listed as accepted or published were included. Nine additional variables were collected applicant age, gender, citizenship status, American vs. international medical school, public vs. private medical school, allopathic doctor versus osteopathic doctor, number of years between college and medical school, additional degrees, and application year. The primary outcome was the rate of publication misrepresentation, defined as peer-reviewed journal citations listed on the application that could not be verified or on which tation process, programs may want to include additional inquiries into the accuracy of applicant publications.

In this study we made use of an archive containing extensive timber survey data collected in the early 1920s from privately owned forestland. These data covered over 50,000 ha and effectively represent a 19% sample of the entire area. check details The historical forest conditions reconstructed from these data fit the classic model of frequent-fire forests large trees, low density, and pine-dominated. However, unlike other large-scale forest reconstructions, our study area exhibited relatively low overall variability in forest structure and composition across the historical landscape. Despite having low variability, our analyses revealed evidence of biophysical controls on tree density and pine fraction. Annual climatic variables most strongly explained the range in historical tree densities, whereas historical pine fraction was explained by a combination of topographic and climatic variables. Contemporary forest inventory data collected from both public and private lands within the same general area, albeit not a direct remeasurement, revealed substantial increases in tree density and greatly reduced pine fractions relative to historical conditions. Contemporary forests exhibited a far greater range in these conditions than what existed historically. These findings suggest that private forestland managed with multiaged silviculture may be similar to public forestland with respect to departure in forest structure and compositions from that of historical forests. However, there may be differences between management objectives that favor timber production, more typical on private lands, vs. those that favor restoration, increasingly supported on public lands.

To evaluate changes in masticatory function and food preferences after dental treatment in children with early childhood caries.
This prospective study assessed masticatory function with the (1) mixing ability test using duo-coloured chewing gum and (2) the number of chews/g and time taken to eat six food items before and 3months after dental treatment. A dental examination and a food preference questionnaire were also completed.
Twenty-five children (age 4.9±0.5years, baseline dmft/child 11.4±4.9) completed the study. The mean number of restorations/child, total extractions/child, and posterior extractions/child was 5.1±2.9, 6.4±5.2, and 3.6±2.3, respectively. The number of chews/g of cereal (p=.014) and popcorn (p=.003) significantly increased after dental treatment. The number of chews/g and duration taken for cereal (chews/g r=0.795, p=.000, duration r=0.794, p=.000) and peanuts (chews/g r=0.459, p=.032) were significantly associated with more extractions. There was no change in mastication function for the other foods, mixing ability score, and child's food preferences after dental treatment.

The main clinical features are abdominal pain and elevated trypsin levels in the blood. Common causes of acute pancreatitis include cholelithiasis, alcohol consumption and hyperlipidaemia, among which drugs are considered to be one of the rare causes of pancreatitis. The patient in this case was a 16-year-old adolescent female who developed acute severe pancreatitis during the treatment of cryptococcal meningitis with voriconazole for 35 days. Following diagnosis that pancreatitis was induced by voriconazole, the drug was immediately stopped and the patient was discharged after symptomatic treatment. The phenomenon of voriconazole-induced pancreatitis is extremely rare, but we hope that this report can arouse greater attention and vigilance of the majority of medical personnel to improve the safety of patients' medication, especially for children or minors.

To evaluate and compare fractional radiofrequency microneedling alone and in combination with autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in neck rejuvenation.
20 patients with mild to moderate neck laxity were randomized to receive 3sessions of either fractional radiofrequency microneedling +PRP (group A) or fractional radiofrequency microneedling monotherapy (group B). Evaluation was done using optical coherence tomography to detect dermis thickness, measurement of cervicomental angle, a score done by two investigators blinded to used modality (GAIS) and patient satisfaction score.
Both Groups showed a statistically significant improvement in all parameters. Comparing the two groups, the mean dermal thickness after treatment was higher in group A compared with B but was found statistically insignificant. More favorable results were reported in group A according to GAIS. Other parameters showed comparable results.

Hand eczema is one of the common occupational dermatoses, having high prevalence among healthcare professionals (HCP). We found no epidemiological data in the literature concerning the prevalence of hand eczema among HCP in Turkey.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of hand eczema among HCP in Turkey and to determine the demographic characteristics and risk factors that cause eczema.
A clinical assessment- and questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 734 HCP working in a tertiary hospital. Demographic characteristics and personal and occupational risk factors were evaluated in terms of the development of hand eczema.
The survey response rate was 81.8%. The point prevalence of eczema was 27.6%, and the 12-month prevalence was 45.9%. Age, occupation, duration of work, atopic diseases, handwashing frequency, dry skin, moisturizing frequency, and presence and duration of glove use were important factors in the development of hand eczema.
