Environmental mitigation has become a catch-all term for efforts to avoid, minimize or compensate for the adverse impacts of development. Through an analysis of the expensive and complex plan developed to mitigate the anticipated impacts of deepening Savannah Harbor, I develop an ecobiopolitical approach to mitigation. Environmental mitigation is triage, involving difficult choices about which entities are worthy of concern and, thus, candidates for intervention - and, by extension, which are not. It involves decisions about which among the chosen deserve strict protection and which merit looser forms of care. As these processes move to center stage in twenty-first-century governance and politics, it has become important to understand what kinds of environments mitigation generates. What survives? What dies? What flourishes? This article focuses on initiatives designed to maintain minimally suitable conditions for non-human life. Insomuch as the object of habitat mitigation is the animal milieu, rather than the body or population, it can be understood as a form of ecobiopolitics. By contrasting the projected fates of three fish in the post-mitigation ecology of the Savannah River, I argue that the ecobiopolitics of habitat mitigation can be conceptualized at four registers. The first, comparity, highlights the value-laden processes through which some entities become candidates for mitigation and others do not. The second, hierarchy, underscores how candidates for mitigation are ranked in ways that shape the interventions pursued. The third, nonfungibility, foregrounds how problems of commensuration are negotiated in mitigation practice. In the first experiment children spelled to dictation regular words and words with unpredictable spelling that contained either a high- or a low-frequency (i.e., typical or atypical) sound-spelling mappings. Children with dyslexia were found to rely on probabilistic cues in writing stimuli with unpredictable spelling to a greater extent than typically developing children. The difficulties of children with dyslexia on words with unpredictable spelling were limited to those containing atypical mappings. In the second experiment children spelled new stimuli, that is, pseudowords, containing phonological segments with unpredictable mappings. The interaction between lexical knowledge and reliance on probabilistic cues was examined through a lexical priming paradigm in which pseudowords were primed by words containing related typical or atypical sound-to-spelling mappings. In spelling pseudowords, children with dyslexia showed sensitivity to probabilistic cues in the phoneme-to-grapheme mapping but lexical priming effects were also found, although to a smaller extent than in typically developing readers. The results suggest that children with dyslexia have a limited orthographic lexicon but are able to extract regularities from the orthographic system and rely on probabilistic cues in spelling words and pseudowords.Eyes in a schematic face and arrows presented at fixation can each cue an upcoming lateralized target such that responses to the target are faster to a valid than an invalid cue (sometimes claimed to reflect "automatic" orienting). One test of an automatic process concerns the extent to which it can be interfered with by another process. The present experiment investigates the ability of eyes and arrows to cue an upcoming target when both cues are present at the same time. On some trials they are congruent (both cues signal the same direction); on other trials they are incongruent (the two cues signal opposite directions). When the cues are congruent a valid cue produced faster response times than an invalid cue. In the incongruent case arrows are resistant to interference from eyes, whereas an incongruent arrow eliminates a cueing effect for eyes. The discussion elaborates briefly on the theoretical implications.

To synthesise the available evidence relating to best practice in training videofluoroscopy and barium swallow analysts.

The review was conducted according to the PRISMA statement and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42017053744). Data were extracted from nine databases. Studies were included if they described training approaches for clinicians or students of any profession learning to interpret videofluoroscopic (VFSS) or barium swallow studies and were written in English. The methods were heterogeneous and a metanalysis was not possible; a narrative review is presented.

Sixteen studies were eligible, including those designed to evaluate the influence of training as well as those that described training as part of validating an assessment tool or method. The quality of the studies was assessed with the Hawker scale and assigned an NHMRC rating. While the evidence was low quality (NHMRC level IV), training consistently improved the accuracy and reliability of clinicians and students conducting VFSS. No studies reported the outcome of training for barium swallow analysis. There was significant variability in the dose, method, and setting of training.

This study aimed to use peripheral plasma d-glutamate levels to differentiate patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) from healthy individuals and to evaluate its prediction ability using machine learning.

Overall, 31 healthy controls, 21 patients with MCI and 133 patients with AD were recruited. Serum d-glutamate levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Cognitive deficit severity was assessed using the Clinical Dementia Rating scale and the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). We employed four machine learning algorithms (support vector machine, logistic regression, random forest and naïve Bayes) to build an optimal predictive model to distinguish patients with MCI or AD from healthy controls.
