Leaf-cutting ants (Hymenoptera Formicidae) are one of the main pests found in the Americas and they cause global economic losses worth several billions of dollars. While pesticides have been the most widely used control method, new management alternatives in a context of agroecological transition are now being considered. This study focuses on the leaf-cutting ants species found in the pan-Amazon region. As part of efforts to improve management of these pests, this multi-criteria analysis of control strategies covers a total of 691 experiments collected from 153 studies, and the control were evaluated as a function of their management efficacy, environmental and human health impacts, and their ease of application. Chemical control methods were effective but posed a danger to human health and the environment, whereas mechanical methods and integrated management were more sustainable but not always very effective. Some of the biocontrol methods were evaluated as effective and safe for the environment and human health, including the use of entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv) Vuill. (Hypocreales Cordycipitaceae) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokïn (Hypocreales Clavicipitaceae) in the form of bait or sprayed in the nest, or the application of plant mulch in the nest using Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsley) A. Gray (Asterales Asteraceae) or Canavalia ensiformis L. DC. (Fabales Fabaceae). Because of variations in the efficacy data between laboratory and field tests, we are in favor of evaluating these control methods during field studies with different leaf-cutting ant species and under different environmental conditions. These methods should adopt experimental arrangements that are appropriate for local socioeconomic conditions adapted for farmers.

Influenza is a globally occurring viral respiratory infection that can lead to hospitalizations and death. An influenza outbreak can interfere with combat readiness in a military setting, as the infection can incapacitate soldiers. Vaccination remains the most effective tool to prevent and mitigate seasonal influenza. Although influenza vaccinations for U.S. Army soldiers can be monitored through military health systems, those systems cannot capture DoD civilians and Army dependents who may not use military health services. This study aims to gauge flu vaccine uptake and perceptions in U.S. Army civilians and dependents.

An online survey was e-mailed to civilian and dependent enrollees of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. The survey contained 24 questions pertaining to demographics, vaccine history, history of the flu, and beliefs toward vaccines. Chi-square tests, t-tests, and logistic regressions were performed to investigate the association between demographic, behavior, and belief factors with vaccintion and addressing concerns at the provider level, and engaging positively framed public messaging. Increasing flu vaccine uptake is of particular importance as the flu season approaches during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic.

Iron sucrose (FeS) administration induces a state of renal preconditioning, protecting against selected forms of acute kidney injury (AKI). Recent evidence suggests that recombinant hepcidin also mitigates acute renal damage. Hence the goals of this study were to determine whether a new proprietary FeS formulation ('RBT-3') can acutely activate the hepcidin (HAMP1) gene in humans, raising plasma and renal hepcidin concentrations; assess whether the kidney participates in this posited RBT-3-hepcidin generation response; test whether RBT-3 can mitigate a clinically relevant AKI model (experimental cisplatin toxicity) and explore whether mechanisms in addition to hepcidin generation are operative in RBT-3's cytoprotective effects.

Healthy human volunteers (n = 9) and subjects with Stages 3-4 CKD (n = 9) received 120, 240 or 360 mg of RBT-3 (intravenously over 2 h). Plasma and urine samples were collected and assayed for hepcidin levels (0-72 h post-RBT-3 injection). In complementary mouse experiments, RBT-3 creatinine decrements), in part by reducing renal cisplatin uptake by 40%. Exogenous hepcidin (without RBT-3) treatment conferred protection against mild in vivo (but not in vitro) cisplatin toxicity.

RBT-3 acutely and dramatically up-regulates cytoprotective hepcidin production, increasing renal hepcidin levels. However, additional cytoprotective mechanisms are activated by RBT-3 (e.g. Nrf2 activation; reduced cisplatin uptake). Thus RBT-3-induced preconditioning likely confers renal resistance to cisplatin via an interplay of multiple cytoprotective activities.

Variation in DNAm levels is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Several studies have examined the extent to which common genetic variation influences DNAm (i.e. selleck inhibitor mQTLs), however, an improved understanding of mQTLs across diverse human populations is needed to increase their utility in integrative genomic studies in order to further our understanding of complex trait and disease biology. Here, we systematically examine cis-mQTLs in three Southeast Asian populations in the Singapore Integrative Omics (iOmics) Study, comprised of Chinese (n = 93), Indians (n = 83) and Malays (n = 78). A total of 24 851 cis-mQTL probes were associated with at least one SNP in meta- and ethnicity-specific analyses at a stringent significance level. These cis-mQTL probes show significant differences in local SNP heritability between the ethnicities, enrichment in functionally relevant regions using data from the Roadmap Epigenomics Mapping Consortium and are associated with nearby genes and complex traits due to pleiotropy. Importantly, DNAm prediction performance and the replication of cis-mQTLs both within iOmics and between two independent mQTL studies in European and Bangladeshi individuals is best when the genetic distance between the ethnicities is small, with differences in cis-mQTLs likely due to differences in allele frequency and linkage disequilibrium. This study highlights the importance of, and opportunities from, extending investigation of the genetic control of DNAm to Southeast Asian populations.
