Background Male clients of female sex workers ('clients' hereafter) are considered high-risk and potentially a bridge population in the HIV epidemic. Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) is a safe and effective but under-utilised public health intervention to prevent HIV transmission. This study aims to explore clients' awareness of nPEP, intention of uptake, potential barriers to nPEP uptake and adherence, and suggestions for nPEP promotion in China.

We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 clients in two Chinese cities in 2018. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling. The content of the interviews was analysed using thematic content analysis in ATLAS.ti.

Overall, just a minority of participants were aware of nPEP. A majority expressed willingness to use nPEP. Potential barriers to nPEP uptake and adherence included adverse drug reactions, price, concerns of drug efficacy, privacy issues, and forgetting to take the drugs. Almost all participants expressed the need to promote nPEP among clients. Participants suggested that the promotion of nPEP should be at hospitals, online, and be integrated with HIV/AIDS health education.

Our findings suggested that nPEP guidelines should be formulated and implementation strategies should be developed to address barriers to uptake and adherence in order to successfully tap into the potential of nPEP as an effective HIV prevention tool.

The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence rate and elucidate epidemiological factors associated with HCV infection among HIV-infected men in Singapore from 2006 to 2018.

A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a clinical database maintained by the Clinical HIV Program at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, Singapore. Factors associated with incident HCV infections were identified using Cox proportional hazards regression analyses.

Among 1348 HIV-infected male patients who were HCV seronegative at baseline, 64 (4.7%) subsequently tested positive for HCV, giving an incidence of 0.88 per 100 person-years of follow-up (PYFU) (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.69-1.13). see more The incidence rate of HCV seroconversion increased from 0.33 (95% CI 0.12-0.71) per 100 PYFU in 2010-2012 to 1.93 (95% CI 1.36-2.67) in 2016-2018. Independent factors associated with incident HCV infection were younger age groups at HIV diagnosis versus ≥45 years, HIV acquisition via MSM or via both sexual contact and intravenous drug use versus heterosexual transmission, HIV diagnosis in later periods versus 2006-2009, and recent syphilis acquisition.

An increasing trend of incident HCV infection was seen in HIV-infected men, particularly for MSM. Preventive and behavioural interventions should be targeted at HIV-infected individuals engaged in high-risk sexual behaviour.

In Sweden, Thailand belongs to one of the three most common countries of origin among immigrants diagnosed with HIV. This study investigated the need and use of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services among Thai women residing in Sweden. Use of contraceptives and HIV testing in Thailand was also investigated to understand if this influences utilisation of SRH services in Sweden.

A cross-sectional study using postal questionnaire to all Thai-born women (age 23-60) in Stockholm, residing in Sweden since 2014. The response rate was 52.3% (n= 266). Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used.

The majority reported a significant need for information related to SRH services. Most of the women using contraception (70%) bought their contraceptives in Thailand. In total, 60% of the women had been HIV-tested at some point in their lives; the majority were tested in Thailand. Women who had been HIV-tested in Thailand were more likely to also have been tested in Sweden. Significant differences in contraception use, participation in contraceptive counselling and having had an HIV test were found between groups of younger and older women.

Our findings imply that age is an important factor to understand women's need and use of SRH services in Sweden versus Thailand. Furthermore, women's lack of knowledge and reported need for SRH information needs to be considered when making policies and strategies to increase access to SRH services.

There are two options to provide a urine sample at a pathology collection centre or by using a home mailing kit. The study aimed to trial these two testing options designed for young people and describe which is the preferred testing choice.

Data for online requests made from 3 August 2017 to 31 December 2019 provides information for age, gender, location of clients, results received, treatment and partner notification reported by people with positive results.

For 29 months, there were 4642 Webtest requests and 2906 valid results received. For young people (16-29 years), chlamydia positivity was 8.2% (172/2105; 95% CI, 7.1-9.4) versus 3.2% (26/801; 95% CI, 2.2-4.7) for people aged ≥30 years, and 6.8% (198/2906; 95% CI, 6.0-7.8) for all ages. Home mailing kits were the most popular testing choice, with 68.0% (1977/2906) of results received from urine submitted by post and 32.0% (929/2906) via pathology collection centre.

The free online test request service engaged young people at risk of sexually transmissible infections and found home sample collection was most popular.

Using a multifaceted approach for diagnosing and characterising hermaphroditism in the endangered anuran species Rana mucosa, we tracked changes in female reproductive status using hormone monitoring, ultrasound examinations, individual life history, fertilisation records and post-mortem findings. Seven individuals originally sexed as females developed secondary male sexual characteristics, behaviour and hormone profiles and, in some cases, had testicular tissue despite having previously laid eggs. Our results suggest that reproductive technologies can shed light on life history patterns and reproductive anomalies that may affect endangered anuran survival.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disease in women of reproductive age. Multiple studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) and microRNAs (miRNA) play a role in PCOS. This study aimed to explore the role and molecular mechanism of lncRNA -Regulator of reprogramming (lncROR) in PCOS.

Expression level of lncROR in PCOS patients was up-regulated, while level of miR-206 was down-regulated in comparison with control group (P < 0.001). Logistics regression analysis showed that lncROR and miR-206 were independent predictors of PCOS. The ROC curve showed that lncROR had a high diagnostic value for PCOS with an AUC value of 0.893. Pearson correlation coefficient indicated that the expression level of miR-206 was negatively correlated with the level of lncROR. CCK-8 assay and apoptosis assay revealed that downregulation of lncROR up-regulated the expression of miR-206, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting cell apoptosis. However, silencing the expression of miR-206 reversed the above effects caused by down-regulation of lncROR expression. Luciferase reporter gene assay suggested that there was a target relationship between lncROR and miR-206. VEGF was proved to be the target gene of miR-206.

Highly expressed lncROR indirectly up-regulated the expression of VEGF by down-regulating the expression of miR-206, thereby promoting the proliferation of KGN cells and inhibiting apoptosis, and further promoting the development of PCOS.

Accurate prehospital trauma triage is crucial for identifying critically injured patients and determining the level of care. In the prehospital setting, time and data are often scarce, limiting the complexity of triage models. The aim of this study was to assess whether, compared with logistic regression, the advanced machine learner XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) is associated with reduced prehospital trauma mistriage.

We conducted a simulation study based on data from the US National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) and the Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau). We used categorized systolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, Glasgow Coma Scale and age as our predictors. The outcome was the difference in under- and overtriage rates between the models for different training dataset sizes.

We used data from 813,567 patients in the NTDB and 30,577 patients in SweTrau. In SweTrau, the smallest training set of 10 events per free parameter was sufficient for model development. XGBoost achieved undertriage rates in thgorical.

The under- and overtriage rates associated with the advanced machine learner XGBoost were similar to the rates associated with logistic regression regardless of sample size, but XGBoost required larger training sets to obtain robust results. We do not recommend using XGBoost over logistic regression in this context when predictors are few and categorical.Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental genetic disorder associated with a characteristic behavioral phenotype that includes severe hyperphagia and a variety of other behavioral challenges such as temper outbursts and anxiety. These behaviors have a significant and dramatic impact on the daily functioning and quality of life for the person with PWS and their families. To date, effective therapies addressing these behavioral challenges have proven elusive, but several potential treatments are on the horizon. However, a limiting factor for treatment studies in PWS is the lack of consensus in the field regarding how to best define and measure the complex and interrelated behavioral features of this syndrome. The International PWS Clinical Trials Consortium (PWS-CTC, www.pwsctc.org ) includes expert PWS scientists, clinicians, and patient advocacy organization representatives focused on facilitating clinical trials in this rare disease. To address the above gap in the field, members of the PWS-CTC "Behavior Outcomes Working Group" sought to develop a unified understanding of the key behavioral features in PWS and build a consensus regarding their definition and description.
