The purpose of the study was to relate the Intrinsic Religiosity Inventory (IRI) with clinical epilepsy variables, the occurrence of depressive symptoms, and the quality of life (QoL) of 169 adult people with epilepsy (PWEs). Data were compared with those of a similar control group (CG) without psychiatric disorders, with p < 0.05.
A higher intrinsic religiosity (IR) was observed in PWEs when compared with the CG. Impairment in multiple cognitive domains was found in 41 (24.2%) cases, and a score >15 in the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy was observed in 44 (26%) cases. In PWE, a greater IR was associated with the use of more than one antiepileptic drug (AED), epileptiform activity (EA) in the left hemisphere, temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS), and the absence of depressive disorders. An early age of onset and the social functioning dimension of the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31) were the predictive factors for a higher IR in the linear multivariate regression analysis.
The IR was significantly higher in PWE. A higher IR was related to TLE-HS, EA in the left hemisphere, later onset of epilepsy, a better performance in the semantic verbal fluency (SVF) test, and the absence of depressive disorders, suggesting a complex neurophysiological relationship involving multiple factors.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the weather and epidemic condition and risk of febrile seizures (FSs) in Japan.
This single-center, retrospective study included 560 children (age, 6-60 months) with FSs who were transported to our center by ambulance from January 2011 through December 2018. The weather (temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative air humidity, amount of rainfall, sunshine duration, and air concentration of nitrogen dioxide [NO
] and sulfur dioxide [SO
]) and epidemic (influenza virus infection, infectious gastroenteritis, and exanthem subitum) conditions in this region were compared between the periods (days or weeks) with the transportation of children with FS to our hospital and those without such transportation.
In the univariate analyses, neither daily or weekly weather condition nor weekly epidemic condition was correlated to FS transportation. Furthermore, the multiple logistic regression analysis suggested that epidemic influenza virus infection (odds ratio [OR], 1.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.73) and infectious gastroenteritis (OR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.09-2.54) were the independent risk factors for FS occurrence and weather condition was not associated with FS risk.
Febrile seizure incidence may be increased by epidemic febrile infections but not by weather condition.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a nonpsychoactive derivative of cannabis. Studies indicate that it is safe and effective in treating certain types of epilepsy. The present study examined the presence of adverse or beneficial cognitive or functional adaptive effects associated with CBD in the treatment of children, adolescents, and teenagers with treatment-resistant epilepsy (TRE) as part of an ongoing prospective, open-label safety study.
Participants (N = 38) between the age of 3 and 19 years with TRE were enrolled in an open-label study of a pharmaceutical formulation of CBD (Epidiolex®; GW Research Ltd.) as an add-on treatment. In addition to baseline physical, neurological, and laboratory testing, cognitive assessment was completed prior to initiating CBD and after one year, both using the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-CB). Many participants were unable to complete the NIHTB-CB because of the magnitude of their cognitive impairment (n = 24), and in these cases, the participant's caregiver was asked to complete the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System - Second Edition (ABAS-II) as a measure of functional adaptive skills.
There were no statistically significant changes in cognitive function, as measured by the NIHTB-CB, in those participants who were able to complete such testing, but there was a nonsignificant trend toward improvement in some cognitive domains. For participants who were unable to complete formal standardized cognitive testing because of the magnitude of their cognitive impairment, their functional adaptive skills, as measured by the ABAS-II, were unchanged after a one-year trial of CBD.
Our findings suggest that CBD, as an add-on drug for TRE in a pediatric sample, does not appear to cause adverse effects (AEs) involving cognition or adaptive function over one year of treatment.

We examined psychosis occurrence in patients with late-onset focal epilepsy.
Case records of consecutive patients with focal epilepsy without central nervous system (CNS) disease (n = 873) were retrospectively examined, with gender, age at epilepsy onset, duration of epilepsy, epilepsy type (temporal or extratemporal), and age at the initial examination used as clinical and demographic variables. Patients with onset ≤49 years old (control) were compared with those with late-onset.
In the control group (n = 775), 38 had a history of psychosis, while none in the late-onset group (n = 98) reported that (p = 0.016). PI3K inhibitor Psychosis was only interictal in 32 and predominantly postictal in 6, while 2 patients showed both interictal and postictal psychosis. Duration of illness (p = 0.000001) and temporal lobe epilepsy (p = 0.000343) were significant determinants associated with psychosis. Gender (p = 0.210) and age at examination (p = 0.084) were found to be not contributory to psychosis.
The prevalence for a history of psychosis in the present cohort (2.
