In order to characterize the quality of semen from men in an assisted reproduction center in the city of Guayaquil (Ecuador), 204 semen samples were collected from patients with fertility disorders aged 20 to 57 years, who were admitted between May 2017 and September 2018. A basic spermogram was performed on each sample, following the fabricant recommendations for the examination and processing of human semen. It was found that 27.4% of the samples presented normozoospermia. Among the disorders, it was found that 27.9% had teratozoospermia, 8.8% had oligoteratozoospermia and a higher number of patients were found to be between 30 and 39 years old. A high percentage of patients presented sperm morphology and quality values below the reference limits established by the World Health Organization.A study was conducted to describe the cases of thyroid cancer in Manizales, Colombia. This study describes the characteristics of patients; and tumors according to size, laterality, focalization, nodal involvement, contiguous invasion, metastasis and TNM staging. A total of 672 cases were analyzed, 84.8% of which were women between 40 and 64 years of age. From the population, 34.1% were cases diagnosed in early stages and 15% of the tumors were >20 mm in size. Nodal and adjacent tissue involvement was present in 33% and 3% of the cases, respectively. Distant metastasis was documented in 1% of the cases. Papillary carcinoma was present in 82% of cases. Thyroid cancer in Manizales is more frequent in adult women. Tumor size and being at the early stages are factors that suggest improvement in early detection.Descriptive study conducted in order to determine the presence of the fimH and afa genes in urinary isolates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli. Isolates from project TO-06/09 of the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño in Lima, Peru were used. see more A total of 75 urinary isolates of Escherichia coli were included. Gene identification was performed by polymerase chain reaction. From the 75 isolates, 74 (98.7%) were positive for the fimH gene and 6 (8.0%) were positive for the afa gene. Virulence factors produced by the fimH and afa genes were evident in urinary isolates of ESBL producing Escherichia coli.Retrospective descriptive study carried out to determine the characteristics of fungemia in 285 cancer patients hospitalized from 2012 to 2016 at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN). Demographic, clinical and microbiological information was evaluated. Fungemia by C. albicans predominated in patients with solid tumors and without neutropenia, while those caused by C. tropicalis predominated in patients with hematological neoplasia and neutropenia. C. tropicalis was the agent isolated in most cases (47.0%). Fungemia increased over time in patients without neutropenia. Fungemia caused by C. albicans increases with age in patients with solid tumors without neutropenia. It is concluded that fungemia are mainly caused by C. tropicalis in patients with hematological neoplasia with neutropenia and by C. albicans in patients with solid tumors without neutropenia. In addition, fungemia in patients without neutropenia increases over time; and those caused by C. albicans increase with age in patients with solid tumors without neutropenia.During the period from 1995 to 2017, in order to determine the diversity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus pathogenic variants in Peru, 102 Peruvian genomes (97 from a hospital setting and 5 from an out-of-hospital setting) were analyzed using the multilocus typification scheme and BLASTn in the search for virulence genes. Fifteen different sequence types were identified. It was found that the ST3 genotype, which is found in the pandemic clone, was the most abundant, with 52% (n=53); followed by ST120, with 23.5% (n=24); and the CC345 clonal complex, with 11.8% (n=12). A total of 89 analyzed strains presented genes encoding the pathogenicity island VpaI-7 (87.3%), while 96 presented the tdh gene (94.1%), and 6 the trh gene (5.9%). The ST3 genotype was the predominant one during the evaluated period, this genotype was the cause of a major outbreak in Peru's past history. Other pathogenic genotypes found represent a latent public health risk associated with seafood consumption. In cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic areas it is a common practice for patients to manipulate their lesions with traditional treatments as a first therapeutic option. A case series study was conducted in order to describe the frequency and the variations of the patient manipulation of cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions at the Cayetano Heredia Hospital. The study included 124 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis. From the patient population it was found that 54% (67/124) manipulated their lesions. Of this, 92.5% (62/67) did so with chemicals, and 43.3% (29/67) with plants. The most frequent local changes reported by patients were increased lesion size in 35.8% (24/67) and increased inflammation in 28.4% (19/67). Manipulation by patients decreased the positivity of the parasitological diagnosis in those patients with ulcerative lesions.Observational, cross-sectional, populational study to determine the prevalence of infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis D virus (HDV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) in the Matsés ethnic group, after immunization against HBV. ELISA and qPCR tests were used in 963 residents. The prevalence of HBsAg, Anti-HBc and Anti-HBs was 3.32%, 36.03% and 58.67% respectively. In 3.1% of the population the viral load was greater than 2000 IU/mL. In children under 10 years, the prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HBc was 0.0% and 2.6%, respectively, while protective antibodies were found in 94.4%. The prevalence of HIV and HTLV-1/2 infection was 1.5% and 0.6%, respectively. It is therefore concluded that there are low rates of HBV and HDV infection in the Matsés child population. Likewise, the presence of HIV and HTLV-1/2 infection is confirmed. In order to describe manifestations from patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), sociodemographic variables such as, previous medical history, clinical and radiological manifestations, treatments and evolution of patients were evaluated. This took place from March 6th to 25th, 2020, in the "Edgardo Rebagliati Martins" National Hospital in Lima. Seventeen patients were registered 76% were male, with an average age of 53.5 years (range 25-94); 23.5% had returned from abroad; 41.2% were referred from other health facilities; 41.2% were admitted to mechanical ventilation; 29.4% (5 patients) died. The risk factors detected were advanced age, arterial hypertension and obesity. The main symptoms detected were cough, fever and dyspnea. Frequent laboratory findings were elevated C-reactive protein and lymphopenia. The predominant radiological presentation was bilateral interstitial lung infiltrate. A first experience in the management of patients diagnosed with severe COVID-19 in Peru is reported.
