Normal pregnancy is essential for human reproduction. However, environmental BaP (benzo(a)pyrene) and its metabolite BPDE (benzo(a)pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide) induce dysfunctions of human trophoblastic cells, which could further result in miscarriage. Yet, the molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this work, a novel lnc-HZ03 and a novel miR-hz03 were identified. Both lnc-HZ03 and miR-hz03 were highly expressed in human recurrent miscarriage villous tissues and in BPDE-exposed trophoblastic cells. Lnc-HZ03 and miR-hz03 upregulated each other, forming a positive feedback loop. MiR-hz03 could also upregulate p53 level by enhancing its mRNA stability. Both lnc-HZ03 and p53 mRNA contained the target site for miR-hz03 and could directly interact with miR-hz03. It was this target site instead of its mutant on lnc-HZ03 that regulated p53 expression. Subsequently, the upregulated p53 facilitated SAT1 transcription and enhanced SAT1-catalyzed spermine metabolism, which further resulted in trophoblastic cell apoptosis and induced miscarriage. All together, the p53/SAT1 pathway upregulated by lnc-HZ03 and miR-hz03 could promote BPDE-induced human trophoblastic cell apoptosis and the occurrence of miscarriage, shedding novel light on the causes of miscarriage. Graphical abstract Lnc-HZ03 and miR-hz03 regulate the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage (RM). In human trophoblastic cells, lnc-HZ03 upregulates miR-hz03 level. MiR-hz03 increases the RNA stability of lnc-HZ03 and p53 mRNA. P53 promotes SAT1 transcription and reduces its cellular spermine content, resulting in cell apoptosis. Under normal conditions, lnc-HZ03/miR-hz03 and p53/SAT1 pathways are downregulated, maintaining normal pregnancy. After exposure to BPDE, lnc-HZ03/miR-hz03 and p53/SAT1 pathways are upregulated and finally induce miscarriage. The purpose of this study was to confirm the effect of effortful swallowing (ES) exercise programs applied to increase the swallowing-related muscle strength in the elderly. In this study, 20 healthy elderly people (76.65 ± 5.87 years; 10 women and 10 men) participated and exercised for 7 weeks. The experimental group performed ES exercise combined with external resistance using Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), and the control group performed pure ES without external resistance. The exercises were performed for 20 min a day, 2 days a week for 7 weeks in both groups. ES was repeated 60 times in weeks 1 and 2, 80 times in week 3 and 4, and 120 times in weeks 5-7. In the experimental group, the isometric and swallowing tongue pressures at week 8 were significantly improved compared to baseline. At week 8, the anterior and swallowing tongue pressures and anterior tongue endurance were significantly higher than those of the control group. In the control group, no significant change in tongue pressure-related variables was observed after 7 weeks of exercise. ES exercise combined with IOPI resistance for 7 weeks tended to increase the suprahyoid muscle activation level without statistical significance. For clinical application of this exercise protocol, further studies including more elderly people and patients with dysphagia are required.Efficient broadband absorption of solar radiation is desired for sea water desalination, icephobicity and other renewable energy applications. We propose an idea of superimposing two high-loss resonances to broaden bandwidths of a few-layer absorber, which is made of dielectric/ metal/dielectric/ metal layers. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/e6446.html Both the simulation and experiment show that the structure has an averaged absorption efficiency higher than 97% at wavelengths ranging from 350 to 1200 nm. The bandwidth of the absorption larger than 90% is up to 1000 nm (410-1410 nm), which is greater than that (≤ 750 nm) of previous MIM planar absorbers. Especially, the average absorption from 350 to 1000 nm is kept above 90% at an incidence angle as high as 65°, meanwhile still maintained above 80% even at an incident angle of 75°. The performance of angular insensitivity is much better than that of previous few-layer solar absorbers. The flexible 1D nonoble metasurface absorbers are fabricated in a single evaporation step. Under the illumination of a halogen lamp of P = 1.2 kW/m2, the flexible metasurface increases its surface temperature by 25.1 K from room temperature. Further experiments demonstrate that the heat localization rapidly melts the accumulated ice. Our illumination intensity (P = 1.2 kW/m2) is only half of that (P = 2.4 kW/m2) in previous solar anti-ice studies based on gold/TiO2 particle metasurfaces, indicating that our metasurface is more advantageous topractical applications. Our results illustrate an effective pathway toward the broadband metasurface absorbers with the attractive properties of mechanical flexibility, low cost of the no-noble metals, and large-area fabrications, which have promising prospects in the applications of solar heat utilization.Giant viruses have brought new perspectives on the virosphere. They have been increasingly described in humans, including in several metagenomic studies. Here, we searched into the metagenome of the 5300-year-old Ötzi mummy for the presence of giant virus-related sequences using MG-Digger pipeline. We found 19 reads (0.00006% of the total read number) that best matched (mean ± standard deviation (range) for e-values of 5.0E-6 ± 1.4E-6 (6.0E-5-4.0E-10) and for amino acid identity of 69.9 ± 8.7% (46.4-84.9%) and most significantly with sequences from various giant viruses, including mostly mimiviruses. This expands current knowledge on the ubiquity and relationship with humans of giant viruses.
Bone health education publicly available through the Internet, if evidence-based and unbiased, could help patients deal with issues such as decision-making, maintaining healthy lifestyles, using medications correctly, and improving their communication with health professionals.
We performed an environmental scan and quality assessment of the currently available osteoporosis and bone health patient education information on the World Wide Web. The sample websites were identified by using three separate search tools Google Advanced, Bing, and Ask.com . Two independent investigators collected data and appraised the quality of selected websites.
We identified 48 websites. Most websites were focused on risks factors of osteoporosis, preventive measures, screening recommendations, and topics to discuss with the physician. All websites provided adequate information describing treatment options; however, only 36% had information addressing duration of treatment, what happens when treatment stops, and the benefits and risks of various treatments.
