Wheat covers a significant fraction of the US Pacific Northwest (PNW) dryland agriculture. Past studies have suggested that management practices can differentially affect productivity and emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) across the different agro-ecological Zones (AEZs) in PNW. In this study we used CropSyst, a biophysically-based cropping systems model that simulates crop processes and water and nitrogen cycles, with the purpose of evaluating relevant scenarios and contributing analyses to inform adaptation and mitigation strategies aimed at reducing and managing the risks of climate change. We compared the baseline historical period of 1980-2010 with three future periods 2015-2045 (2030s), 2035-2065 (2050s), and 2055-2085 (2070s). The uncertainty of the future climate was captured using 12 general circulation models (GCMs) forced with two representative carbon dioxide concentration pathways (RCP 4.5 and 8.5). The study region was divided into three AEZs crop-fallow (CF), continuous cropping to fallow tra the 2030s period, the rate of SOC losses decreased in the 2050s, and more so in the 2070s as SOC and carbon input reached equilibrium with losses. Higher carbon input resulted from higher biomass production under elevated CO2 scenarios. The total GHG emissions were 1.95, 3.16 and 4.84 Mg CO2-equivalent ha-1year-1 under RCP 4.5, and 1.99, 3.43 and 5.49 Mg CO2-equivalent ha-1year-1 under RCP 8.5 during 2070s in CF, CCF and CC respectively, with N2O accounting for about 81% of total GHG emissions.Pyridine contamination poses a significant threat to human and environmental health. Due to the presence of nitrogen atom in the pyridine ring, the pi bond electrons are attracted toward it and make difficult for pyridine treatment with biological and chemical methods. In this study, coupling Fenton treatment with different biological process was designed to enhance pyridine biotransformation and further mineralization. After Fenton oxidation process optimized, pretreated pyridine was evaluated under three biological (anaerobic, aerobic and microaerobic) operating conditions. Under optimum Fenton oxidation, pyridine (30-75%) and TOC (5-25%) removal efficiencies were poor. Biological process alone also showed insignificant removal efficiency, particularly anaerobic (pyridine = 8.2%; TOC = 5.3%) culturing condition. However, combining Fenton pretreatment with biological process increased pyridine (93-99%) and TOC (87-93%) removals, suggesting that hydroxyl radical generated during Fenton oxidation enhanced pyridine hydroxylation and further mineralization in the biological (aerobic > microaerobic > anaerobic) process. Intermediates were analyzed with UPLC-MS and showed presence of maleic acid, pyruvic acid, glutaric dialdehyde, succinic semialdehyde and 4-formylamino-butyric acid. High-throughput sequencing analysis also indicated that Proteobacteria (35-43%) followed by Chloroflexi (10.6-24.3%) and Acidobacteria (8.0-29%) were the dominant phyla detected in the three biological treatment conditions. Co-existence of dominant genera under aerobic/microaerobic (Nitrospira > Dokdonella > Caldilinea) and anaerobic (Nitrospira > Caldilinea > Longilinea) systems most probably play significant role in biotransformation of pyridine and its intermediate products. Overall, integrating Fenton pretreatment with different biological process is a promising technology for pyridine treatment, especially the combined system enhanced anaerobic (>10 times) microbial pyridine biotransformation activity.Plastic waste pollution has been identified as a serious global issue, posing environmental risks in terms of massive waste generation, ocean pollution, and increases in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Despite documented environmental impacts, it remains debatable whether the global plastic waste trade (GPWT) for reutilization and recycling, as part of the global circular economy (CE), has historically contributed to environmental benefits. To investigate if historical GPWT has contributed to environmental benefits in terms of reductions of GHG emissions, this study analyzed GPWT between China and trading countries through their trajectories, characteristics and driving forces of reductions of GHG emissions between 1992 and 2017. Results indicated an increasing trend of reductions of GHG emissions in GPWT between China and trading countries over 25 years. A net reduction of 8.27 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) was observed in 2012, nearly 84 times levels observed in 1992. Policy implications after China's recent ban of imports of GPWT in December 2017 and recent changes of GPWT to other Asian countries are discussed. Dramatic changes in sustainable approaches to GPWT for reutilization and recycling are required. In spite of the success of vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP), which are widely used for stabilizing painful vertebral compression fractures, concerns have been raised about use of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cements for these procedures since the high compressive modulus of elasticity (E) of the cement is thought to be one of the causes of the higher number of adjacent-level vertebral fractures. Therefore, bone cements with E comparable to that of cancellous bone have been proposed. click here While the quasi-static compressive properties of these so-called "low-modulus" cements have been widely studied, their fatigue performance remains underassessed. The purpose of the present study was to critically compare a commercial bone cement (control cement) and its low-modulus counterpart on the basis of quasi-static compressive strength (CS), E, fatigue limit under compression-compression loading, and release of methyl methacrylate (MMA). At 24 h, mean CS and E of the low-modulus material were 72% and 77% lower than those of the control cement, whereas, at 4 weeks, mean CS and E were 60% and 54% lower, respectively. The fatigue limit of the control cement was estimated to be 43-45 MPa compared to 3-5 MPa for the low-modulus cement. The low-modulus cement showed an initial burst release of MMA after 24 h followed by a plateau, similar to many other commercially available cements, whereas the control cement showed a much lower, stable release from day 1 and up to 1 week. The low-modulus cement may be a promising alternative to currently available PMMA bone cements, with the potential for reducing the incidence of adjacent fractures following VP/BKP.
