Higher air pollution modelled for 1935 (when participants would have been in utero) was associated with worse change in IQ from age 11-70 years (β = -0.006, SE = 0.002, p = 0.03) but not cognitive trajectories from age 70-79 years (p > 0.05). There was no support for other critical/sensitive periods of exposure or an accumulation of risk (all p > 0.05).

The life course paradigm is essential in understanding cognitive decline and this is the first study to examine life course air pollution exposure in relation to cognitive health.

Understanding metabolic mechanisms associated with cognitive changes preceding an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis could advance our understanding of AD progression and inform preventive methods.

We investigated the metabolomics of the early changes in executive function and delayed recall, the earliest aspects of cognitive function to change in the course of AD development, in order to better understand mechanisms that could contribute to early stages and progression of this disease.

This investigation used longitudinal plasma samples from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (WRAP), a cohort of participants who were dementia free at enrollment and enriched with a parental history of AD. Metabolomic profiles were quantified for 2,324 fasting plasma samples among 1,200 participants, each with up to three study visits, which occurred every two years. Metabolites were individually tested for association with executive function and delayed recall trajectories across age.

Of 1,097 metabolites tested, levels of seven were associated with executive function trajectories, including an amino acid cysteine S-sulfate and three fatty acids, including erucate (22  1n9), while none were associated with delayed recall trajectories. Replication was attempted for four of these metabolites that were present in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA). Although none reached statistical significance, three of these associations showed consistent effectdirections.

Our results suggest potential metabolomic mechanisms that could contribute to the earliest signs of cognitive decline. In particular, fatty acids may be associated with cognition in a manner that is more complex than previously suspected.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is an extra-articular rheumatological disease characterised by widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain. Metal-induced oxidative stress contributes to the severity of FMS.

First, this study evaluated the association between plasma levels of toxic heavy metals and essential metals with oxidative stress (OS) markers. Second, the OS markers and metal contents were correlated with the disease severity by assessing the Fibromyalgia Impact Questioner Revised (FIQR) and tender points (TP).

A total of 105 FMS patients and 105 healthy controls of similar age and sex were recruited. OS parameter such as lipid peroxidation (LPO), protein carbonyl group (PCG), nitric oxide (NO) and essential metals such as zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and toxic heavy metals such as aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), lead (Pb) were estimated.

Levels of LPO, PCG, NO (p< 0.001) and Cu, Mn, and Al (p< 0.001), were significantly higher, and Mg (p< 0.001) and Zn (p< 0.001) were significantly lower in patients compared to controls. A positive association was observed between OS parameters, FIQR and TP with Cu, Al and Mn. A significant negative association was observed between Zn and Mg with FIQR, TP and OS parameters.

Heavy metals such as Al induce OS parameters and decrease the levels of essential trace elements such as Mg and Zn, which may be responsible for the severity of FMS.

The aim was to analyze the effect of one session and three sessions of strength training (ST) on pain in women with fibromyalgia (FM).

Twenty-three women with FM performed three sessions of ST for a week. Each training session worked the main muscle groups and lasted 60min. Three sets of 12 repetitions were performed with 1min intervals in between. The load was increased based on the perception of subjective effort of each patient. Pain intensity was evaluated immediately after the first and third sessions using a Fischer digital algometer.

After the first ST session, pain reduction was observed. No significant differences were found in pain thresholds on the baseline versus the third session. The analysis of MBI demonstrated that the ST does not worsen patients' pain, indicating a 52.2% trivial effect and a 39.1% beneficial effect.

Our results suggest that there is no harmful effect on the pain of women with FM after an acute session of ST. click here We emphasize that despite the promising results, more studies on the subject are needed to help understand pain in patients with FM.

The adsorption of salivary pellicle proteins onto the material surface is key for denture plaque formation.

We aimed to investigate the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and mucin (MCN) onto denture base metal materials using a 27-MHz quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method.

A gold (Au), titanium (Ti), and cobalt chromium alloy (Co-Cr) sensors were employed for QCM measurements. Adsorbed amounts of BSA or MCN were calculated by observing the frequency decrease, and the apparent reaction rate, kobs, was obtained by the curve fitting of the frequency shift against the adsorption time.

The adsorbed amounts of BSA on Ti were significantly lower than those on Au and Co-Cr. For MCN adsorption, Au showed significantly greater amounts of adsorption than Co-Cr. The kobs of Ti for BSA adsorption was significantly smaller than for the Co-Cr. The kobs of Ti, and Co-Cr for MCN adsorption were significantly smaller than for the Au. A clear correlation was not determined between adsorbed amounts of BSA or MCN onto each sensor and the surface topography or contact angles.
