We emphasize that we can understand the ways in which stochasticity can either extend or reduce the lifetime of transients by studying the interactions between the stochastic and deterministic processes present, and we summarize both the current state of knowledge and avenues for future advances.The mechanisms and evolution of metallic structural colours are of both fundamental and applied interest, yet most work in arthropods has focused on derived butterflies and beetles with distinct hues. In particular, basal hexapods-groups with many scaled, metallic representatives-are currently poorly studied and controversial, with some recent studies suggesting either that thin-film (lamina thickness) or diffraction grating (longitudinal ridges, cross-ribs) elements produce these colours in early Lepidoptera and one springtail (Collembola) species. Especially the collembolan basal scale design, consisting of a single lamina and longitudinal ridges with smooth valleys lacking cross-ribs, makes them an interesting group to explore the mechanisms of metallic coloration. Using microspectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy and finite-difference time-domain optical modelling, we investigated scale colour in seven springtail species that show clear metallic coloration. Reflectance spectra are largely uniform and exhibit a broadband metallic/golden coloration with peaks in the violet/blue region. Our simulations confirm the role of the longitudinal ridges, working in conjunction with thin-film effects to produce a broadband metallic coloration. Broadband coloration occurs through spatial colour mixing, which probably results from nanoscale variation in scale thickness and ridge height and distance. These results provide crucial insights into the colour production mechanisms in a basal scale design and highlight the need for further investigation of scaled, basal arthropods.Pulsed high-intensity focused ultrasound (pHIFU) uses acoustic pressure to physically disrupt tumours. The aim of this study was to investigate whether pHIFU can be used in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) to enhance survival of tumour-bearing animals. Murine orthotopic pancreatic KPC tumours were exposed both to a grid of pHIFU lesions (peak negative pressure = 17 MPa, frequency = 1.5 MHz, duty cycle = 1%, 1 pulse s-1, duration = 25 s) and to anti-CTLA-4/anti-PD-1 antibodies. Acoustic cavitation was detected using a weakly focused passive sensor. Tumour dimensions were measured with B-mode ultrasound before treatment and with callipers post-mortem. Immune cell subtypes were quantified with immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. pHIFU treatment of pancreatic tumours resulted in detectable acoustic cavitation and increased infiltration of CD8+ T cells in the tumours of pHIFU and pHIFU + ICI-treated subjects compared with sham-exposed subjects. Survival of subjects treated with pHIFU + ICI was extended relative to both control untreated subjects and those treated with either pHIFU or ICI alone. Subjects treated with pHIFU + ICI had increased levels of CD8+IFNγ+ T cells, increased ratios of CD8+IFNγ+ to CD3+CD4+FoxP3+ and CD11b+Ly6G+ cells, and decreased CD11chigh cells in their tumours compared with controls. These results provide evidence that pHIFU combined with ICI may have potential for use in pancreatic cancer therapy.Seabirds have evolved numerous adaptations that allow them to thrive under hostile conditions. Many seabirds share similar colour patterns, often with dark wings, suggesting that their coloration might be adaptive. Interestingly, these darker wings become hotter when birds fly under high solar irradiance, and previous studies on aerofoils have provided evidence that aerofoil surface heating can affect the ratio between lift and drag, i.e. flight efficiency. However, whether this effect benefits birds remains unknown. Here, we first used phylogenetic analyses to show that strictly oceanic seabirds with a higher glide performance (optimized by reduced sink rates, i.e. the altitude lost over time) have evolved darker wings, potentially as an additional adaptation to improve flight. Using wind tunnel experiments, we then showed that radiative heating of bird wings indeed improves their flight efficiency. These results illustrate that seabirds may have evolved wing pigmentation in part through selection for flight performance under extreme ocean conditions. We suggest that other bird clades, particularly long-distance migrants, might also benefit from this effect and therefore might show similar evolutionary trajectories. These findings may also serve as a guide for bioinspired innovations in aerospace and aviation, especially in low-speed regimes.In this report, we describe a case of atypical neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) presenting with an isolated lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum (ILSCC). There is a paucity of information regarding this topic within the literature and only 7 previous case reports have been published at the time of writing. To our knowledge, this case report is also the first to describe an atypical NMS variant in the context of an ILSCC. In this report, we describe the important considerations in formulating differential diagnosis for ILSCC and are the first report to propose a possible pathophysiological mechanism relating ILSCC with NMS.
Repetitive negative thinking is conceptualized to be a transdiagnostic process linked to the development and maintenance of psychopathology. Prior research distinguishes between disorder-specific exemplars (worry, rumination) and transdiagnostic measures of repetitive negative thinking with differences across disorders reported. However, establishing the measurement invariance of these measures is necessary to support meaningful comparisons across clinical groups.
Bayesian structural equation modelling was used to assess the approximate invariance of the Ruminative Response Scale, Penn State Worry Questionnaire, and the Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire across individuals with a principal diagnosis of either depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder.
All scales demonstrated approximate measurement invariance across the three disorder groups. The depressive disorder group reported a higher level of rumination than the generalized anxiety disorder group (Δµ = 0.25, 95% e to directly compare the scores on these measures between diagnostic groups.

This supports their use in transdiagnostic contexts and indicates that it is appropriate to directly compare the scores on these measures between diagnostic groups.The objective of this study was to assess if built environment changes to two suburban parks that involved extensive community engagement and physical activity programming increased park use and physical activity. selleckchem This study employed a natural experiment evaluation design where community engagement informed the redesign of two neighborhood parks. Community engagement in the redesign of the parks was tracked as was the diversity of the partners on the steering committee and participation by community members in the process. Before and after park improvements, data were collected using the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) instrument to measure change in use and activity level in each park. Park use increased at both parks, but physical activity levels did not significantly improve. The number of park visitors observed increased by 53% and 50%, respectively. Both parks had increased usage during evening hours when the family programming was the greatest. This study has several implications for policy and practice. First, this study suggests that community engagement can play a role in redesigning a park and likely leads to increased awareness and use of neighborhood parks. Second, while park use increased, simply adding new features to a park may not immediately increase physical activity. Additional efforts need to be made to activate the park and increase physical activity. Third, practitioners should not discount the value of building park awareness that increases park use as it may be a first step to increasing physical activity.Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a potentially fatal condition that can be challenging for clinicians to identify in the setting of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This difficulty is compounded when a patient presents with all of the clinical signs of a TTP-like microangiopathy, however, with near normal ADAMTS13. This case report describes a 44-year-old female with a history of SLE who was hospitalized with acute on chronic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and altered mental status. The patient's ADAMTS13 was mildly low; hence, she was initially treated for SLE-associated immune thrombocytopenic purpura without any clinical response. The patient then underwent plasmapheresis (plasma exchange [PLEX]) for treatment of a suspected TTP-like microangiopathy. She responded to PLEX with improvement in her platelet count and mental status. This case illustrates the importance of considering TTP-like microangiopathic hemolytic anemia in the differential for patients with a history of SLE presenting with clinical signs of TTP even in the setting of near-normal ADAMTS13, thus warranting prompt treatment with PLEX.We report a rare case of a 32-year-old male who ingested 32.4 to 54 mg of colchicine and presented after 44 hours. He developed progressive multiple organ failure with shock, acute kidney failure, troponemia, pancytopenia, absolute neutropenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute liver failure, rhabdomyolysis, and lactic acidosis. He also developed electrolyte abnormalities and refractory hypoglycemia. Initial treatment consisted of activated charcoal, fluids, and broad-spectrum antibiotics with supportive treatment of mechanical ventilation, hemodialysis, vasopressors, N-acetylcysteine, colony-stimulating factors, and blood products. Literature shows potential benefit of colchicine-specific Fab fragments for acute toxicity with limited studies and is not currently available in the United States. Further research for N-acetylcysteine protocol for acute liver failure in colchicine toxicity and potential use of colchicine-specific Fab fragments is needed. Our case demonstrates the importance of early use of activated charcoal for ingestion overdose with the incorporation of poison control into multidisciplinary team for coordinated patient care.
Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is the gold standard for noninvasive myocardial tissue characterization but requires intravenous contrast agent administration. It is highly desired to develop a contrast agent-free technology to replace LGE for faster and cheaper CMR scans.
A CMR virtual native enhancement (VNE) imaging technology was developed using artificial intelligence. The deep learning model for generating VNE uses multiple streams of convolutional neural networks to exploit and enhance the existing signals in native T1 maps (pixel-wise maps of tissue T1 relaxation times) and cine imaging of cardiac structure and function, presenting them as LGE-equivalent images. The VNE generator was trained using generative adversarial networks. This technology was first developed on CMR datasets from the multicenter Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Registry, using hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as an exemplar. The datasets were randomized into 2 independent groups for deep learning training and testing.
