Of a total of 65 patients with COVID-19 admitted to our ICU we included 41 patients with repeated measure of IL-6. There was a significant difference in IL-6 levels between survivors and non-survivors over time (p = 0.001); moreover, non survivors had a significantly higher IL-6 maximal value when compared to survivors (720 [349-2116] vs. 336 [195-646] pg/mL, p = 0.01). The IL-6 maximal value had a significant predictive value of ICU mortality (AUROC 0.73 [95% CI 0.57-0.89]; p = 0.01).

However decisive these disruptive events may have been, the populations and their gene pools have been shaped markedly also by the history prior to the conquests. This study focuses mainly on the Chachapoya peoples that inhabit the montane forests on the eastern slopes of the northern Peruvian Andes, but also includes three distinct neighboring populations (the Jívaro, the Huancas and the Cajamarca). By assessing mitochondrial, Y-chromosomal and autosomal diversity in the region, we explore questions that have emerged from archaeological and historical studies of the regional culture (s). These studies have shown, among others, that Chachapoyas was a crossroads for Coast-Andes-Amazon interactions since very early times. In this study, we examine the following questions 1) was there pre-Hispanic genetic population substructure in the Chachapoyas sample? 2) did the ting agents in shaping and maintaining the high genetic diversity in the Chachapoyas region.
In Denmark, 16,500 cases of melanoma and keratinocyte cancers were registered in 2015, of which 90% could have been avoided by behavioral changes. We aimed to test novel interventions in a randomized design. The interventions targeted Danes going on vacation to high UVI destinations aiming to decrease sunburn by increasing use of sun protection to prevent skin cancer in the Danish population.
We report a randomized behavioral intervention during May-Dec 2018 with 1548 Danish adults on vacation in 2018 for a period of 1-3 weeks. The study population was population-based and aged 18-65 years. We tested two protection routines against minimal intervention control group (2-by2-factorial design) 1) Avoidance of the sun during peak hours and shade, use of the UV-index and planning of indoor/outdoor activity respectively and, 2) Coverage by increasing use of the hat advice and increasing sunscreen amount by application routine. Outcome was use of protection and sunburn.
There were no differences in sunburn prevalence between intervention and control groups. Protection routine 1 and 2 both increased the overall protection score compared to non-users. Protection routine 1 increased the reported use of shade and decreased time exposed in the sun. Protection routine 2 increased the use of hat and sunscreen amount.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are profoundly involved into the pathophysiology of manifold cancers. Recent data suggested a pivotal role of miRNAs as biomarkers in different biological processes including carcinogenesis. However, their role in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) is only poorly understood.
We determined circulating levels of miR-21 and miR-223 in 45 samples from patients with NET treated between 2010 and 2019 at our department and compared them to healthy controls. Results were correlated with clinical records.
In the total cohort of Patients with NET, miR-223 presented significantly lower levels compared to healthy control samples. In contrast, levels of miR-21 indicated no significant changes between the two groups. Interestingly, despite being significantly downregulated in all NET patients, concentrations of miR-223 were independent of clinical or histopathological factors such as proliferation activity according to Ki-67 index, tumor grading, TNM stage, somatostatin receptor expression, presence of functional/ non-functional disease or tumor relapse. Moreover, in contrast to data from recent publications analyzing other tumor entities, levels of miR-223 serum levels did not reflect prognosis of patients with NET.
Lower concentrations of circulating miR-223 rather reflect the presence of NET itself than certain tumor characteristics. The value of miR-223 as a biomarker in NET might be limited to diagnostic, but not prognostic purposes.

Low birth weight (LBW) is a serious public health problem in low- and middle-income countries and a leading cause of death in the first month of life. In India, about 18% of children are born with LBW (<2500 grams) in 2015-16. In this study, we aim to examine the influence of maternal factors and socio-demographic covariates on LBW in Indian children.
Data were drawn from the fourth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), conducted in 2015-16. A cross-sectional study was designed using a stratified two-stage sampling technique. Cross-tabulation, Pearson's chi-squared test, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to assess the impact of maternal factors and other covariates on children's LBW.
Of total participants (n = 147,762), 17.5% of children were found to be born with LBW. The study revealed that women who had prior experience of stillbirth (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.20, 95% CI 1.04-1.38) and any sign of pregnancy complications (AOR 1.08, 95% CI 1.05-1.11) were more likely to have LBW children, even after adjusting for a range of covariates.
