Recent advances in flexible electronics and wearable technologies have enabled compact devices to acquire personal physiological signals in the home setting, including those of expectant mothers. However, the high noise level in the daily life renders long-entrenched challenges to extract fECG from the combined fetal/maternal ECG signal recorded in the abdominal area of the mother. Thus, an efficient fECG extraction scheme is a dire need. In this work, we intensively explored various extraction algorithms, including template subtraction (TS), independent component analysis (ICA), and extended Kalman filter (EKF) using the data from the PhysioNet 2013 Challenge. Furthermore, the modified data with Gaussian and motion noise added, mimicking a practical scenario, were utilized to examine the performance of algorithms. Finally, we combined different algorithms together, yielding promising results, with the best performance in the F1 score of 92.61% achieved by an algorithm combining ICA and TS. With the data modified by adding different types of noise, the combination of ICA-TS-ICA showed the highest F1 score of 85.4%. It should be noted that these combined approaches required higher computational complexity, including execution time and allocated memory compared with other methods. Owing to comprehensive examination through various evaluation metrics in different extraction algorithms, this study provides insights into the implementation and operation of state-of-the-art fetal and maternal monitoring systems in the era of mobile health.A full-scale mesocosm study was conducted to depict how integrated biological systems interact to adapt to contaminant stress and improve remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)contaminated soils. The combination of Verbascum sinuatum L. and microbial consortium (fungi and bacteria) was employed along with three differently contaminated soils. After 240 days the highest PAHs removal (up to 68 %) and 6-rings compounds decrease was found in soil with lower pollution and cation exchange capacity. V. sinuatum showed a significant adaptability over time in terms of redox biology. Soil enzyme activities and microscopic evidences proved a rising plant-microorganisms association and a successful mycorrhization, arising from the inoculation of our consortia. In addition, an enhanced richness of PAHs degrading genes was achieved. Microbial co-metabolism, helped by the establishment of complex relationships with hosting plant, demonstrated to be suitable for the degradation of high molecular weight PAHs and represents a biotechnology with great prospects.Microalgal omega-3 fatty acids are considered as an efficient alternative for fish-based omega-3 fatty acids. Ethyl esters derived from omega-3 fatty acids are being considered as the drug for hypertriglyceridemia. In this study, omega-3 fatty acids rich Chlorella sp. was utilized for the transesterification for the ethyl ester production using a potassium carbonate alkaline catalyst. At the optimized conditions of transesterification, 86.2% ethyl ester yield was achieved with solvent to algae ratio (20 mL/g), water addition (45 %), catalyst (4 %), temperature (75°C), and reaction time (60 min). Additionally, the acid-hydrolysed spent biomass was used for the production of ɛ-polylysine by fermentation using Streptomyces sp. as fermentative organism. The maximum yield of 1.78 g/L was achieved after 90 h fermentation. This study established a biorefinery approach where two highly valuable compounds could be produced from the Chlorella sp. by transesterification followed by fermentation.A collection of 37 fungi associated to Italian lemon plants with disease symptoms, was obtained. Ten genera including Aspergillus, Alternaria, Nigrospora, Lasiodiplodia, Dothideomycetes, Pleurostoma, Setosphaeria, Penicillium, Fusarium and Colletotrichum were identified by using ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, D1/D2 26S and COX1 loci. The last three genera were abundant on the damaged fruits, being Colletotrichum the more abundant (32.4 %). CaInt2 and CgInt primers support the identity of these isolates as C. gloeosporioides. Variability, inferred by rep-PCR and multilocus sequence analysis shows genetic differences among the C. gloeosporioides isolates. Infective profile evaluated in Colletotrichum isolates shows different leave infection percentages (26 to 60 %). SEM analysis showed mycelium, spores and appressoria on the leaves of selected Colletotrichum isolates. Specifically, the AL-05 and AL-13 isolates showed a high chitin deacetylase activity (CDA) peaking at 1.2 U/mg protein in AL-13. This is the first report on C. gloeosporioides infecting Italian lemon leaves in Mexico.Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the most widely used host for the expression of therapeutic proteins. Recently, significant progress has been made due to advances in genome sequence and annotation quality to unravel the black box CHO. Nevertheless, in many cases the link between genotype and phenotype in the context of suspension cultivated production cell lines is still not fully understood. While frameshift approaches targeting coding genes are frequently used, the non-coding regions of the genome have received less attention with respect to such functional annotation. Importantly, for non-coding regions frameshift knock-out strategies are not feasible. In this study, we developed a CRISPR-mediated screening approach that performs full deletions of genomic regions to enable the functional study of both the translated and untranslated genome. An in silico pipeline for the computational high-throughput design of paired guide RNAs (pgRNAs) directing CRISPR/AsCpf1 was established and used to generate a library tackling process-related genes and long non-coding RNAs. Next generation sequencing analysis of the plasmid library revealed a sufficient, but highly variable pgRNA composition. Recombinase-mediated cassette exchange was applied for pgRNA library integration rather than viral transduction to ensure single copy representation of pgRNAs per cell. After transient AsCpf1 expression, cells were cultivated over two sequential batches to identify pgRNAs which massively affected growth and survival. By comparing pgRNA abundance, depleted candidates were identified and individually validated to verify their effect.In the time of disasters and crisis, governmental organizations are responsible for performing disaster-relief tasks and providing economic support. At the rise of these situations, corporations are expected to help society via corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects. This viewpoint article reflects upon the Ford-Otosan's attempt to devise a CSR project to support Turkish citizens during the COVID-19 crisis and meet the public's expectations. This study aims to set a future research agenda on CSR and multinational joint-ventures' non-market strategies by illustrating a unique insight into an international joint-venture during the COVID-19 crisis.
Nigeria reports the highest age-standardized mortality rate for breast cancer (BC) among African countries and disproportionately high rates of high-grade cancer. Histological grade is a strong predictor of mortality, and evidence suggests that educational attainment influences cancer outcomes.
We characterize the association between educational trends across the life-course and BC grade at diagnosis.
Data on 224 BC patients enrolled in the Mechanisms for Established and Novel Risk Factors for Breast Cancer in Nigerian Women (MEND) study was analyzed. Participant and parental (mother and father) education was categorized as low (primary school or less) or high (secondary school or greater). Accordingly, the educational trend across the life-course was determined for each participant relative to each parent stable high, increasing, decreasing, or stable low. BC grade was classified as high (grade 3) or low (grades 1-2).
About 34% of participants, 71% of fathers, and 85% of mothers had low education. Therefore, the present study sought to determine the effect of PDE5i on placental adiponectin/Nrf2 pathway in gestational testosterone-induced impaired glucose tolerance and fetal growth. Fifteen pregnant Wistar rats were allotted into three groups (n = 5/group) receiving vehicles (Ctr; distilled water and olive oil), testosterone propionate (Tes; 3.0 mg/kg; sc) or combination of testosterone propionate (3.0 mg/kg; sc) and sildenafil (50.0 mg/kg; po) from gestational day 14-19. On gestational day 20, plasma and placenta homogenates were obtained for biocdless of depressed Nrf2.We recently developed a modified solid dispersion of curcumin-loaded nanocomplexes (CNCs) in gums which promoted the prolonged and sustained release of curcumin. However, its safety assessment has not yet been investigated. Here, acute and chronic toxicities of CNCs were assayed using mice and hamsters. CNCs were orally administered to the animals. Doses of CNCs used for acute toxicity testing were 0.1, 1.1, 11.0 g/kg body weight for mice and 0.2, 2.1 and 21.4 g/kg body weight for hamsters. Doses of CNCs for chronic toxicity testing were 0.09, 0.27, 0.8 g/kg body weight/day for mice and 0.18, 0.54 and 1.61 g/kg body weight/day for hamsters. This regimen was followed daily for 6 months. Low and medium doses of CNCs did not induce any side effects in acute and chronic toxicity tests in either animal species. However, in acute toxicity testing, the organ-weight to body-weight ratio of spleen was significantly increased in mice treated with 11 g/kg body weight along with elevated levels of some biochemical parameters.
