Salinity stress results in significant losses in plant productivity and loss of cultivable lands. Although Pongamia pinnata is reported to be a salt-tolerant semiarid biofuel tree, the adaptive mechanisms to saline environments are elusive. Despite a reduction in carbon exchange rate (CER), the unchanged relative water content provides no visible salinity induced symptoms in leaves of hydroponic cultivated Pongamia seedlings for 8 days. Salinity stress significantly increased zeatin (~5.5-fold), and jasmonic acid (~3.8-fold) levels in leaves while zeatin (~2.5-fold) content increased in leaves as well as in roots of salt-treated plants. Metabolite analysis suggested that osmolytes such as myo-inositol and mannitol were enhanced by ~12-fold in leaves and roots of salt-treated plants. Additionally, leaves of Pongamia showed a significant enhancement in carbohydrate content, while fatty acids were accumulated in roots under salt stress condition. At the molecular level, salt stress enhanced the expression of genes related to transporters, including the Salt Overly Sensitive 2 gene (SOS2), SOS3, vacuolar-cation/proton exchanger, and vacuolar-proton/ATPase exclusively in leaves, whereas the Sodium Proton Exchanger1 (NHX1), Cation Calcium Exchanger (CCX), and Cyclic Nucleotide Gated Channel 5 (CNGC5) were up-regulated in roots. Antioxidant gene expression analysis clearly demonstrated that peroxidase levels were significantly enhanced by ~10-fold in leaves, while Catalase and Fe-superoxide Dismutase (Fe-SOD) genes were increased in roots under salt stress. The correlation interaction studies between phytohormones and metabolites revealed new insights into the molecular and metabolic adaptations that confer salinity tolerance to Pongamia.In mimicry systems, receivers discriminate between the stimuli of models and mimics. Weber's Law of proportional processing states that receiver discrimination is based on proportional, not absolute, differences between stimuli. Weber's Law operates in a variety of taxa and modalities, yet it has largely been ignored in the context of mimicry, despite its potential relevance to whether receivers can discriminate models from mimics. Specifically, Weber's Law implies that for a given difference in stimulus magnitude between a model and mimic, as stimulus magnitudes increase, the mimic will be less discriminable from their model. This implies that mimics should benefit when stimulus magnitudes are high, and that high stimulus magnitudes will reduce selection for mimetic fidelity. Whether models benefit from high stimulus magnitudes depends on whether mimicry is honest or deceptive. We present four testable predictions about evolutionary trajectories of models and mimics based on this logic. We then provide a framework for testing whether receiver discrimination adheres to Weber's Law and illustrate it using coevolutionary examples and case studies from avian brood parasitism. We conclude that, when studying mimicry systems, researchers should consider whether receiver perception conforms to Weber's Law, because it could drive stimulus evolution in counterintuitive directions.
Mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) is believed to reduce the effectiveness of antiplatelet drugs. Effective dual-antiplatelet therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is mandatory to avoid acute stent thrombosis (ST). The effectiveness of ticagrelor in MTH-treated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors is still a matter of debate. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of MTH on the platelet-inhibitory effect of ticagrelor in comatose survivors of OHCA treated with primary PCI.
Eighteen comatose survivors of OHCA with acute coronary syndrome undergoing immediate PCI treated with MTH were compared with 14 patients with uncomplicated primary myocardial infarction after PCI, matched for gender and age, in a prospective, single-center, observational study. Platelet aggregation was evaluated using VerifyNow P₂Y₁₂ point-of-care testing at 3 time points admission (T₀), during MTH (T₁), and 48-72 h after rewarming (T₂).
Ticagrelor effectively inhibits platelet aggregation in OHCA patients subjected to MTH and in all patients in the control group. The effectiveness of ticagrelor did not differ between the MTH group and the control group (p = 0.581). In 2 cases in the MTH population, the platelet response to ticagrelor was inadequate, and in one of them it remained insufficient during the re-warming phase. There was no stent thrombosis in these patients.
The present study confirmed the effectiveness of ticagrelor to inhibit platelets in myocardial infarction patients after OHCA treated with primary PCI undergoing hypothermia. The use of cooling was not associated with an increased risk of stent thrombosis.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) and spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) are now increasingly recognized. Both conditions predominantly affect females; however, the exact pathophysiology remains unclear. Large multi-center databases can help elucidate the underlying mechanism and optimize treatments to improve outcomes by allowing us to compare features and outcomes of patients with TTS and patients with SCAD.
Takotsubo syndrome patients were enrolled from the International Takotsubo Registry and compared to SCAD patients from the Canadian Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection Cohort Study. In total 2098 TTS patients and 750 SCAD patients were included in the present study.
More than 85% of patients in both groups were females. TTS patients were older compared to SCAD patients. Physical triggers were more common in TTS patients, while emotional triggers and non-identifiable triggering events were more common in SCAD patients. Left ventricular ejection fraction was more impaired in TTS compared to SCAD.
