To assess the impact of anxiety and depression in the risk of converting to glaucoma in a cohort of glaucoma suspects followed over time.
The study included a retrospective cohort of subjects with diagnosis of glaucoma suspect at baseline, extracted from the Duke Glaucoma Registry. The presence of anxiety and depression was defined based on electronic health records billing codes, medical history and problem list. GDC-6036 concentration Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to obtain HRs for the risk of converting to glaucoma over time. Multivariable models were adjusted for age, gender, race, intraocular pressure measurements over time and disease severity at baseline.
A total of 3259 glaucoma suspects followed for an average of 3.60 (2.05) years were included in our cohort, of which 911 (28%) were diagnosed with glaucoma during follow-up. Prevalence of anxiety and depression were 32% and 33%, respectively. Diagnoses of anxiety, or concomitant anxiety and depression were significantly associated with risk of converting to glaucoma over time, with adjusted HRs (95% CI) of 1.16 (1.01, 1.33) and 1.27 (1.07, 1.50), respectively.
A history of anxiety or both anxiety and depression in glaucoma suspects was associated with developing glaucoma during follow-up.

Limited studies have identified the changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) thickness in patients with chronic Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) at different stages of the disease. We aimed to characterise the pRNFL thickness changes in patients with LHON having m.11778G>A (
) mutation.
This retrospective cross-sectional study included 221 eyes from patients with LHON (n=145)-classified into seven groups according to disease duration-and 52 eyes from healthy controls (n=26). All subjects underwent pRNFL examinations. pRNFL thickness of the superior, nasal and inferior, and temporal quadrants, and the 360° average were measured.
Within 3months of onset, the temporal pRNFL thickness decreased significantly, whereas the remaining quadrants and the average pRNFL thickness initially increased. The temporal quadrant (p<0.01) and average pRNFL thickness (p=0.02) significantly decreased at 3-6months. Excluding that in the nasal quadrant (p=0.93), pRNFL thickness significantly after 60 months.
The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) offers fellowship programmes to help young ophthalmologists, mainly from low-resource countries, improve their practical or research skills in ophthalmology subspecialty areas. Using questionnaires, the objective of the present study was to evaluate how the ICO Fellowship Programme has impacted on improving knowledge, skills and the careers of young ophthalmologists from low-resource countries.
From 2001 to 2019 overall 1140 ICO fellowships were awarded. A questionnaire was sent to ICO fellows after the conclusion of their fellowship and another 3 years later. Part 1 contained 26 questions, while Part 2 had 21 questions. The answers were collected through an online platform and analysed descriptively thereafter.
1101 Part 1 questionnaires had been sent to former fellows, with a return rate of 47% (516 responses) and 829 Part 2 questionnaires with a return rate of 47% (390 responses). Overall, 98.3% strongly or somewhat agreed that knowledge in their subspl leadership position in their home country.
The burgeoning area of mobile health (mHealth) has experienced rapid growth in mobile apps designed to address mental health issues. Although abundant apps offer strategies for managing symptoms of anxiety and stress, information regarding their efficacy is scarce.
This study aimed to assess the effect of an mHealth app on user self-ratings of psychological distress in a sample of 270,461 app users. The Tapping Solution App guides users through the therapeutic protocols of Clinical Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), an evidence-based psychophysiological intervention that combines acupressure with elements of cognitive and exposure therapies.
App users provided self-ratings of emotional intensity before and after app sessions (termed "tapping meditations") using an 11-point Subjective Units of Distress scale. App user data for 23 tapping meditations, which addressed psychological symptoms of anxiety and stress, were gathered between October 2018 and October 2019, totaling 380,034 completed app sessions.al health care, the app promises accessible and convenient therapeutic benefits. We report an unusual case of radiation-induced glioma with a very long latent period. The patient had a history of brain stem glioma diagnosed 40 years earlier treated by radiotherapy. For treatment of radiation-induced glioma, radiotherapy was utilized again. Following therapy, the patient presented with an acute pontine infarct. To the best of our knowledge this may be the first report of radiation-induced glioma and radiation-induced stroke occurring within the same patient. The H-bond donating ability for 127 compounds including drug fragments and isosteres have been quantified using a simple and rapid method with 31P NMR spectroscopy. Functional groups important to medicinal chemistry were evaluated including carboxylic acids, alcohols, phenols, thioic acids and nitrogen group H-bond donors. 31P NMR shifts for binding to a phosphine oxide probe have a higher correlation with equilibrium constants for H-bonding (log KHA) than acidity (pKa), indicating that these binding experiments are representative of H-bonding ability and not proton transfer. Additionally, 31P NMR binding data for carboxylic acid isosteres correlates with physicochemical properties such as lipophilicity, membrane permeability and plasma protein binding. This method has been used to evaluate the H-bond donating ability of small molecule drug compounds such as NSAIDs and antimicrobials.
