Enzyme-based time-temperature integrators (TTIs) were applied to indicate the ripeness of plastic-container-packaged kiwifruit. The hypothesis was that the ethylene gas production, an indication of kiwifruit ripeness, depends on the time-temperature history. The market-purchased, unripe kiwifruit was assumed to be stored in a plastic container to ripen at home, as common practice in Korea. The kinetics of ethylene gas production and TTI color change was found to be suitable for the indication. The Arrhenius activation energy (Ea ) of the ethylene gas production and color changes of lipase-, amylase-, and laccase-based TTIs were 41.60 ± 10.87 kJ/mol, and 42.76 ± 9.57, 100.28 ± 6.84, and 30.49 ± 4.41 kJ/mol, respectively. Kiwifruit firmness was also tested as a practical, major quality factor. The Ea of the firmness changes was 39.66 ± 4.64 kJ/mol. In scenarios tests, the firmness could be most accurately predicted from the lipase-based TTI color. Overall, the lipase-based TTI was found to be the best in terms of the similarity of the Ea and the prediction accuracy. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Currently, there is no commercially available indicator that can determine the ripeness of packaged kiwifruit. Although an ethylene gas indicator is possible, it has been difficult to commercialize because the gas may leak in the package. An indicator on plastic containers with kiwifruit, as is common in Korea, has been developed using a conventional time-temperature integrator (TTI). The hypothesis was that the production of ethylene gas, indicating kiwi ripening, is also dependent on the time-temperature history. It was found that the TTI color change over time was suitable for judging suitable kiwifruit hardness, a major kiwifruit ripeness index.
Limited and erratic precipitation with inefficient irrigation scheduling often leads to an unstable crop yield and low water-use efficiency (WUE) in semi-arid and semi-humid regions. A 2-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of three irrigation strategies (conventional irrigation (CK), full-drip irrigation (FI), based on crop evapotranspiration and precipitation forecast, and deficit drip irrigation (DI) (75% FI)) on photosynthetic characteristics, leaf-to-air temperature difference (∆T), grain yield, and the WUE of summer maize.
The results showed that the daily average net photosynthetic rate (Pn) of DI and FI increased by 25.4% and 25.8% at jointing stage in 2018, and 26.3% and 26.5% at grain-filling stage in 2019 compared with CK, respectively. At jointing stage in 2018 and grain-filling stage in 2019, the transpiration rate (Tr) of DI was significantly lower than that of FI (P < 0.05) but there was insignificant difference in Pn value (P > 0.05). The ∆T between 1200-1400 of DI and FI was significantly lower than that of CK at jointing stage in 2018 and grain-filling stage in 2019 (P < 0.05). The 2-year average grain yields of DI and FI were 11.4 and 11.5t ha
, which increased by 32.4% and 32.8% compared with CK, respectively. The WUE of DI was 2.82 kg m
, which was 17.9% and 33.8% higher than that of FI and CK, respectively.

Deficit drip irrigation based on crop evapotranspiration and precipitation forecast improves crop WUE and maintains high grain yields in semi-arid and semi-humid regions. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.Since microplastics (MPs) bring the potential risks to human health when plastics are ingested, more needs to be known about the presence and abundance of human ingestion of MPs. To address these issues, we reviewed 108 publications in Web of Science concerning abundances, sources, and analytical methods of MPs in human daily intake including fish, salt, drinking water, beverages, package food, and other food. The results demonstrate that aquatic food products (fish and bivalves) present a wide range of 0-10.5 items/g for bivalves and 0-20 items/individual for fish. Salt data in literatures present a concentration of 0-13,629 particles/kg. Drinking water is also a pathway of MPs exposure to human, presenting a concentration range from 0 to 61 particles/L for tap water and 0 to 6292 MPs/L for bottled water. Besides, MPs have been found in beverages, package food, sugar, honey, vegetables, and fruits. Therefore, human intake of MPs via ingestion is a nonnegligible exposure route.Inhibition of α-glucosidase can slow carbohydrate metabolism, which is known as an effective strategy for diabetes treatment. FIN56 order The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment (50, 60, and 70℃) for 15 days on the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of bitter melon. The results show that the bitter melon heated at 70℃ for 12 days had the best α-glucosidase inhibitory effect. However, the amount of free polyphenols, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5-HMF), and the browning degree of bitter melon generally increased with the time (15 days) and temperature of the thermal treatment, which is positively related to their antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. In conclusion, aged bitter melon shows great α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, which may be related to the increased free form of the involved phenolic compounds and Maillard reaction products. This suggests that thermal processing may be a good way to enhance the application of bitter melon for diabetes treatment. This study demonstrated that heat-treated bitter melon can lower the blood glucose level; therefore, it can be used as a potential anti-hyperglycemic and functional food.Kiwifruit contains abundant nutritive compounds and is highly favored by the consumers worldwide. Therefore, detailed metabolic profiling is important to provide theoretic basis for the improvement of kiwifruit quality. In this study, the levels of volatiles, carotenoids, and mineral elements in the flesh of 17 kiwifruit accessions were evaluated. Acids and esters were the main volatiles in kiwifruit. During these 17 kiwifruit accessions, "Chenhong," three "Jinyan," and two "Guichang" germplasms were specifically rich in aromatic esters, which might be associated with their special taste. The main carotenoids were lutein, β-carotene, and zeaxanthin, and their levels were also genotype specific, with the green-fleshed "Guichang" having the highest level of carotenoids, and red-fleshed "Fuhong" and "Chenhong" being rich in zeaxanthin. Partial correlation analysis showed that the contents of some mineral elements were significantly correlated with those of specific volatiles and carotenoids, indicating the impacts of mineral elements on the accumulation of volatiles and carotenoids in the kiwifruit flesh.
