So far, the determination of the packing parameter required the use of theoretical models with assumptions deviating from the physical conditions. The collagenase activity of mcCNFs enhanced about 2.9 and 4.6 at 85 and 90 °C, respectively, compared to free collagenase. Thermal stability of mcCNFs increased about 31% and 24% after 3 h of incubation at 50 and 60 °C, respectively. After 10 cycles of reusing, the mCNFs collagenase showed 83% of its initial activity. Results showed that the mcCNFs revealed 1.4 times more activity than the free collagenase in 0.16% protein waste. Recently, electrospun fibres formed by a variety of polymers have begun to see use in a number of applications, such as filtration in energy applications, insulation in thermodynamics and protein scaffolding in biomedicine. In this study, we constructed electrospun fibres and thin films made of DNA and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTMA)-modified DNA (CDNA) embedded with dyes, organic light-emitting materials (OLEMs), and gold nanorods (GNRs). These materials provide significant advantages, including selectivity of dimensionality, solubility in organic and inorganic solvents, and functionality enhancement. In addition, coaxial fibres made of CDNA were constructed to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing relatively complex fibres with an electrospinner. To determine the basic physical characteristics of the fibres and thin films containing GNRs and OLEMs, we conducted current measurements, photoluminescence (PL) measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The currents in DNA and CDNA were found to exhibit Ohmic behaviour, while the PL emission could be controlled by OLEMs. In addition, the XPS provided the chemical configuration of samples, and the UV-Vis spectra revealed the plasmon resonance of GNR. Due to their simple fabrication and enhanced functionality, these DNA and CDNA fibres and thin films could be used in various devices (e.g., filters or blocking layers) and sensors (e.g., gas detectors and bio sensors) in a number of industries.Conventional degreasing of skins and hides in the leather industry requires high amounts of organic solvents and detergents that cause environmental issues. In this study, the LIP2 lipase from the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica (YLLIP2) was shown to be effective in degreasing sheepskins, thus reducing the amount of harmful chemicals. Using 6 mg of lipase/kg of raw skin, successful degreasing was achieved in only 15 min at pH 8 and 30°C. ToF-SIMS mass spectra of chemically and enzymatically treated sheepskins are consistent with a selective elimination process for the enzymatic treatment. Comparative SEM microscopy, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and physicochemical analyses showed better properties of the enzymatically treated leather than those of the chemical treatment. Effluent physicochemical parameters showed that the enzymatic treatment is a cleaner degreasing operation. Altogether, this work opens new horizons to use the YLLIP2 lipase as a more efficient alternative in the leather industry.

Emerging evidence suggests that circadian rhythms affect seizure propensity in addition to, and possibly independent of, sleep-wake states. Subject to extreme seasonal changes in light and dark, the northerly Arctic can serve as a "natural experiment" to assess the real-life impact of environmental influences on seizure severity. Therefore, we evaluated the timing of seizure evacuations over 11.25 years in a well-defined region of the Canadian Arctic.

Retrospective review of EEG database and patient records at the single "bottleneck" hospital to which all patients from the Kivalliq Region in Nunavut, Canada are evacuated for seizure emergencies. We calculated the mean resultant length (MRL) of circular data for circannual analysis, and conducted Rayleigh's test to assess for a statistical departure from circular uniformity.

Screening 40,392 EEGs, we found 117 medical evacuations from 99 distinct individuals from September 2009 to November 2020. Most evacuations occurred month-wise in May (19%); week-wish grows. Additional factors likely also play a role in circannual variation of seizure evacuations in the Arctic, which warrants further research.

We analyzed mortality and causes of death among people with convulsive epilepsy in rural areas of northwestern China.

We established a population-based prospective cohort of people with convulsive epilepsy in an epilepsy prevention and management program in rural northwestern China from January 2012 to December 2013. A uniform cause of death questionnaire was used to obtain detailed information on participants who died during the follow-up until December 2016. We calculated the standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) and proportional mortality rate for major causes of death. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to investigate the risk factors associated with mortality.

Among 4296 people with convulsive epilepsy, 216 died during a median follow-up of 59 months. The overall mortality rate was 10.9 per 1000 person-years, and the overall SMR was 2.0. Accidents (25.5%) ranked first in the cause of death, followed by status epilepticus (SE) (22.9%), probable sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (s.Early-life seizures (ELS) are associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, due to a lack of effective treatments for ELS, it is not clear whether ELS plays a causal role, potentiates the ASD phenotype, or is the result of a common pathophysiology. Deficits in communications are a core feature of ASD. To isolate the impact of ELS on communication, we probed the behavioral consequences of a single episode of kainic acid-induced early-life seizures (KA-ELS) in male and female Sprague-Dawley (CD) rats. Deficits in auditory communication were observed in adult male rats as assessed by behavioral response to ultrasonic vocalization (USV) playback. Ultrasonic vocalizations are classified into two major categories - 50-kHz (positive) calls and 22-kHz (aversive) calls. Behavioral response was assessed via rat preference for different USV playback in a radial arm maze. Response to 22-kHz calls was not impacted by ELS while response to 50-kHz calls was impacted. All rats demonstrated positional preference for the arms adjacent to where 50-kHz calls were playing compared to background noise; however, male ELS rats demonstrated a greater positional preference for the arms adjacent to where 50-kHz calls were playing compared to male control rats. These studies demonstrate that responses to socially relevant auditory cues are chronically altered in adult male rats following a single episode of ELS. We speculate that these changes contribute to previously reported social deficits associated with ELS.

Mental illness is commonly comorbid with epilepsy. In sub-Saharan Africa there exists limited access to neurological and psychiatric services predisposing to a "treatment gap" in epilepsy and mental healthcare.

To understand healthcare providers' knowledge, attitudes, and management practices toward epilepsy and comorbid mental illness in sub-Saharan Africa.

A cross-sectional online survey following the STROBE guidance was conducted among healthcare providers in sub-Saharan Africa. Eleven questions looking to ascertain clinician demographics, knowledge of epilepsy, and comorbid mental illness as well as management practices were developed.

Of 203 responses most (92%) respondents recognized a bi-directional relationship between mental health and epilepsy. However, mental illness screening in people newly diagnosed with epilepsy was infrequently performed (14%). Only 1 in 7 (16%) respondents had high confidence in their clinical competence at managing psychiatric comorbidities. Most would value further training (74%) and improvements to be made in current management practices within their local healthcare settings (94%).

This pilot study highlights the need to improve the awareness of management of mental disorders in populations with epilepsy within sub-Saharan Africa in health providers there.
