A phage-display library was generated using a Bus thalamus scorpion toxin (BTK-2) as a peptide scaffold. BTK-2 belongs to the disulfide-rich family of proteins with pronounced structural stability due to the presence of three disulfide bridges that connects antiparallel beta-sheets and one alpha helix. Using BTK-2 as a phage display scaffold, we introduced mutations in five residues located in the alpha-helix and two residues located in the smaller loop, keeping intact the disulfide bridges to create a peptide phage-displayed library with disulfide-rich family properties. The library was subjected to in vivo and in vitro phage display selections against Trypanosoma evansi, the etiological agent of "Surra", a disease that affects a wide range of mammals. The development of T. evansi specific biomarkers is essential to improve diagnostic methods and epidemiological studies leading to a more accurate clinical decision for the treatment of this disease of economic impact for commercial livestock production. In this study, we identified two disulfide-rich peptides targeting T. evansi parasites. Further specificity studies are necessary to investigate the potential of selected peptides as new biomarkers to aid diagnostic and treatment procedures of T. evansi infections. The research on impacts of environmental chemicals on crustacean molting dates back to the 1970s when ground-breaking studies investigated the disruption of molting in Crustacea by organochlorines. With the emergence of a new scientific inquiry, termed environmental endocrine disruption, in the early 1990s, increasing attention has been attracted to the possibility that environmental chemicals capable of wreaking havoc on sex steroid-regulated processes in vertebrates can also adversely affect ecdysteroid-mediated processes, e.g. selleck chemical molting, in crustaceans. Given the fact that many molting-disrupting chemicals accumulate in crustacean tissues and that the effect on molting is not readily visible in the field, the disruption of molting by environmental chemicals has been dubbed the invisible endocrine disruption. In recent years, much advancement has been made in both the documentation of the phenomenon of molting disruption and the search for mechanisms, by which molting disruption occurs. This review provides an overview of the current status of the field of invisible endocrine disruption, and perspectives on future directions are also presented. Hair cortisol concentration is increasingly used as a convenient, non-invasive, and integrative measure of physiology and health in natural populations of mammals. However, the use of this index is potentially confounded by individual variation in body region-specific differences in cortisol deposition rates. Here we examine correlations in cortisol concentrations in hair collected from the ear, shoulder, and thigh of wild snowshoe hares, Lepus americanus, as well as the influence of sex on cortisol measurements. We further evaluated this technique's ability to capture seasonal and cyclical patterns of snowshoe hare glucocorticoid secretion from 2013 to 2015 in the southwestern Yukon (Canada). We found positive correlations (R2 = 0.20-0.32) in all pairwise comparisons among body regions, and differences among individuals accounted for the greatest proportion of variance (47.3%) in measurements. From 2013 to 2015 the hares' primary predator - Canada lynx - approximately doubled in population abundance. We found a significant increase in hare hair cortisol concentrations across this time period. Cortisol indices were higher in summer than winter pelage, reflecting predicted physiological responses to seasonal variation in food availability and individual risk. Variation in hair cortisol concentrations was more similar to long-term (weeks-months) integrative indices of adrenal capacity than point samples of fecal glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations. Overall, we find that hair cortisol analysis is a simple and useful tool for estimations of population-level stress physiology in wild mammals, and sampling of core body regions with consistent moulting patterns produced the most robust results in this species. The aim of this short research paper is to describe changes in the efficacy of post-discharge cleaning by examining the amount of bio-burden on frequent touch points (FTPs) in patient areas, using a validated Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence sampling method. In so doing, we present findings from a secondary outcome of a recent trial, the Researching Effective Approaches to Cleaning in Hospitals (REACH) study. METHODS The REACH study used a prospective, stepped-wedge randomised cluster design. Cross sectional ATP sampling was conducted at three of the 11 participating hospitals. At each hospital, during the control and intervention phase of the study, six Frequent Touch Points (FTPs) were sampled toilet flush, bathroom tap, inside bathroom door handle, patient call button, over bed tray table, and bed rails. RESULTS Across the three hospitals, 519 surfaces in 49 rooms (control phase) and 2856 surfaces in 251 rooms (intervention phase) were sampled. Bedroom FTP cleaning improved across all three hospitals. The cleaning of bathroom FTPs was generally high from the outset and remained consistent throughout the whole study period. Average cleaning outcomes for bathroom FTPs were consistently high during the control period however outcomes varied between individual FTP. Changes in cleaning performance over time reflected variation in intervention effectiveness at the hospital level. CONCLUSION Findings confirm improvement in cleaning in the FTPs in bedrooms, demonstrating improvements in discharge cleaning aligned with the improvements seen when using fluorescent marking technology as a marker of performance. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Azacytidine (AZA) has been used as a promising treatment for relapse after allogeneic transplantation. A clear benefit has been demonstrated when treating patients with a reduced disease burden, thus a prophylactic and preemptive approach to these patients has emerged. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed patients with myeloid malignancies treated with azacytidine in the posttransplantation setting between September 2013 and April 2018 in a single tertiary care hospital. Of 32 patients analyzed, 21 were treated for prophylactic use and 11 preemptively, with a median follow-up of 20 months. Prophylactic treatment consisted of AZA at 32 mg/m2 for 5 days every 28 days, and preemptive treatment of AZA 75 mg/m2 for 5 or 7 days per cycle. In addition, 10 patients received one or more donor lymphocyte infusions (DLIs). Two patients presented with infectious complications demanding hospitalization, and 13 patients (10 in the prophylactic group and 3 in the preemptive group) presented graft-versus-host disease (GvHD).
