Third, the interactions among the policy's spatial effects are explored using the structural equation model (SEM). We find that the CAP's green component not only positively affects the environmental quality in the long term but also generates positive spillovers that have been hitherto underestimated.Marine fish species are an important source of biologically valuable proteins, fats, fat-soluble vitamins, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, but they are also susceptible to pollutants. Mercury is liable to bioamplify in the aquatic food chain, and the health risks posed by methylmercury (MeHg) could undermine the benefits of eating fish, so risk-benefit assessments are needed for those fish species regularly consumed. The purpose of this study was to analyze the concentrations of mercury and characteristics of fatty acids in marine fish harvested from Liaodong Gulf, China, so as to better understand the risk-benefit effects of marine fish consumption. We found that the ratio of MeHg to total Hg (THg) was normally distributed. The concentrations of THg and MeHg in marine fish muscles (14 species, a total of 239) ranged from 0.920 to 0.288 μg/g and 0.050 to 0.192 μg/g, respectively. There were no significant interannual differences in the muscles' concentrations of MeHg and THg, or of their fatty acids (p > 0.05). The proportion of total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) varied significantly among different marine fish-feeding habits (predacious, omnivorous, benthivorous and planktivorous), but the differences between polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were not significant, which may be due to the undistinguished fatty acids (p less then 0.05). The risk-benefit assessment using the intelligence quotient (IQ) scoring model revealed that all the studied marine fish had positive effects on child IQ under different consumption scenarios. Additionally, the integrated risk-benefit analysis for adult cardiovascular health showed that all the studied marine fish, but especially Ditrema temmincki Bleeker, are capable of reducing the relative cardiovascular risk posed by the MeHg in the fish. We conclude the positive effects of eating common marine fish from the Liaodong Gulf far outweigh their negative ones. The Ames test is the most commonly used mutagenicity test worldwide. It is based on a microbial system that uses histidine auxotrophic Salmonella typhimurium strains. Due to either spontaneous mutations or mutations induced by a mutagenic compound, the cells can regain their ability to grow without histidine supplementation. The degree of mutagenicity of a sample correlates with the number of cells that are able to grow in media that lack histidine. All test variants published up to now are endpoint determinations providing no information about cell growth and respiration activity during the cultivation time. This study aimed to develop an alternative type of Ames test by characterizing the respiration activity of Salmonella typhimurium over time for dynamic mutagenicity detection. It focuses on elucidating the mechanisms underlying this novel test system, and serves as a general proof of principle. Respiration activity (oxygen transfer and uptake rate) and biomass growth of Salmonella typhimurium TA 100 and TA 98 were mechanistically modeled to understand and predict the behavior of the bacteria during the Ames test. selleck The results simulated by the model were experimentally validated by the online monitoring of respiration activity over cultivation time using a Respiration Activity MOnitoring System (RAMOS). The simulated prediction was observed to fit well to the experimental data. When a mutagenic compound was added, its mutagenicity could be detected online due to the elevated cell number and respiration of histidine prototrophic cells. Laborious manual evaluation of mutagenicity after cultivation is not necessary. Mutagenicity evaluation with the presented alternative Ames RAMOS test fitted well to results from an Ames fluctuation test. In the future, a miniaturized RAMOS device for microtiter plates should allow for a high-throughput Ames RAMOS test.Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs; ~30-150 m depth) are among the most biologically diverse and least protected ecosystems in the world's oceans. However, discussions regarding the conservation of these unique ecosystems are scarce. To address this issue, we identified the features of MCEs that demonstrate they should be considered as a global conservation priority. Some MCEs are characterized by their well-preserved and unique seascapes; their narrow environmental tolerance and high vulnerability to anthropogenic effects; and their slow recovery and reduced reproductive performance. The unique biodiversity of MCEs includes depth-adapted specialist species and new species, most of which are threatened or important fishery resources. MCEs also provide refuge against human stressors, valuable ecosystem services, and ecological connectivity. MCEs generally meet the criteria to be classified as Ecologically and Biologically Significant Marine Areas under the Convention on Biological Diversity. However, we highlight that many MCEs worldwide are threatened and not yet adequately protected by fishery regulations, marine protected areas, or considered in marine spatial planning. Establishing MCEs as a global conservation priority requires the designation of national, international, transnational, public, and private policies.During cultivated land use, nonseparable relationships exist between certain inputs and outputs. This study explored the influence of the nonseparable characteristics of input and output variables on both the cultivated land use environmental efficiency (CLUEE) and the cultivated land use environmental total factor productivity (CLUETFP). To evaluate China's CLUEE and CLUETFP from 1997 to 2017, we used the nonseparable hybrid model with undesirable outputs (NSH-U) and the nonseparable hybrid Malmquist (NSH-M) productivity index. The results showed the following (1) The CLUEE differed significantly among regions, with the CLUEE decreasing from the eastern region to the western, northeastern, and central regions. We observed large differences in the CLUEE among provinces. (2) Nonradial input inefficiency and radial output inefficiency were the primary sources of cultivated land use environmental inefficiency. (3) Technical progress was the primary driving force behind the growth of CLUETFP across the entire country and in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions; however, technical efficiency limited the growth of CLUETFP to a certain extent.
