Results suggest that the measure is psychometrically sound and may provide clinically useful information for bereavement counselors.The aim of this systematic review was to summarise the effects of ergonomics interventions on work-related upper limb musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, and on productivity in sonographers, surgeons and dentists. A total of 31 studies were included. All studies reported effects on upper limb pain. Nine studies reported effects on dysfunction and only two studies reported effects on productivity. Moderately strong evidence in reducing upper limb pain was found for instigation of microbreaks into long duration surgical procedures, and the use of wider, lighter handles in dental instruments. Moderate evidence was also found for use of prismatic glasses and favourable positioning in reducing upper limb pain. Weak, inconsistent or no evidence was found for all other ergonomics interventions in reducing upper limb pain and dysfunction and increasing productivity. The lack of high quality research, particularly in sonographers and in the outcome of productivity, should be addressed. Practitioner summary This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of ergonomics interventions on upper limb pain, dysfunction and productivity in sonographers, dentists and surgeons. Instigation of microbreaks during long duration procedures and the use of wider, lighter instrument handles were most effective in reducing upper limb work-related pain. Distinct from the muscle atrophy that develops from inactivity or disuse, atrophy that occurs after traumatic joint injury continues despite the patient being actively engaged in exercise. Recognizing the multitude of factors and cascade of events that are present and negatively influence the regulation of muscle mass after traumatic joint injury will likely enable clinicians to design more effective treatment strategies. To provide sports medicine practitioners with the best strategies to optimize muscle mass, the purpose of this clinical review is to discuss the predominant mechanisms that control muscle atrophy for disuse and posttraumatic scenarios, and to highlight how they differ.

The thyroid gland takes relevance because it can be altered by many pollutants known as endocrine disruptors, which are agents capable of interfering with the synthesis of hormones, thus far, it is known that nitrates may disrupt the amount of iodine uptake causing most of the time hypothyroidism and affecting the metabolic functions of the organism in all development stages, resulting in an important health burden for the exposed population. Here, this review and update highlighted the impact of consumption of water contaminated with nitrates and effects on the thyroid gland in humans, concluding that nitrates could act as true endocrine disruptor.Alcohol is the single most important public health challenge in Greenland. We provide an overview of alcohol consumption, drinking patterns, and consequences of excessive use of alcohol in Greenland since 1950 through a synthesis of published results and analyses of population-based interview surveys. The import of alcohol fluctuated over the last 70 years with a peak in the 1980s at 22 litres 100% alcohol per person per year. In 1950 and 2015, the import of alcohol was similar at 8 litres. Several explanations have been put forward to explain the changes including restrictions, increased tax, demographic changes, treatment of alcohol disorders, and public health interventions. The proportion of abstainers increased from 1993 to 2018 while the proportion of participants with regular consumption decreased. About half of the population reported binge drinking at least monthly. Compared with Denmark, there were more abstainers and binge drinkers in Greenland, and fewer had a regular consumption. Although genetics may play a role for drinking patterns, social and cultural conditions are more important. Exposure to domestic alcohol problems and sexual abuse in childhood parallel the recorded import of alcohol and is a likely cause of transgenerational consequences such as youth suicides and alcohol problems.This study investigates heavy metals and naturally occurring radionuclide materials (NORM) possible presence and pollution rates in oil-based drilling fluids system used to drill an oil and gas well. It also estimates the health risks of the drilling crew due to their exposure to these substances. Measurements from Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) revealed that, the concentrations of the metals present in the drilling mud samples varied significantly and decreased in the order of Zn > Al > Ni > Pb > Cr > Cu > As > Hg > Cd. Generally, amongst all the heavy metals considered, mud sample C had the highest heavy metal concentration when compared to samples A and B, respectively. When compared with the recommended maximum allowable limits, Cd and Ni were found to be higher than the International Reference Standard by factors of Cd (3 mg/kg) and Ni (50 mg/kg). The cancer risk obtained from this present study are 1.1 × 10-3 and 7.7 × 10-3 for the drilling crew, which is slightly above the acceptable risk range considered by the environmental and regulatory agencies. The concentrations of radioactive substances as obtained from analysis, show that K-40 is the dominant radionuclide in the samples with the highest value slightly twice the standard reference value. The concentrations of Ra-226 and Th-232 activity in the mud samples were found to be lower when compared with the International Reference Level. Also, the X-ray diffraction analysis helped to identify 16 very important/useful minerals in the three mud samples under consideration. The higher elemental concentrations of potassium and aluminum silicate found in sample C can be credited to the elevated heavy metal-content found in the mud samples. Significantly, these exposure risks found in this present study indicate that the potential health risks due to radiological activities may not pose short - but long-term risks to the drillers.

The aim of this study was to examine health, demographic, and service utilization characteristics of veterans with multimorbid tobacco use disorder (TUD) and morbid obesity compared to those with either condition alone.

Health record data were extracted from the computerized patient record system of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA; October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012). Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to compare veterans with both TUD and morbid obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 40 kg/m

) to veterans with each condition alone on a range of demographic, health, and service utilization outcome variables that also were extracted from the VHA administrative record.

Veterans with both morbid obesity and TUD showed higher rates of medical and psychiatric comorbidity than did veterans with either condition alone. However, while veterans with TUD and morbid obesity showed higher rates of comorbid substance use disorders than veterans with morbid obesity alone, veteransne. Conclusions Veterans with co-occurring morbid obesity and TUD appear to be at greater risk for medical disease and psychiatric conditions. The unexpected finding that veterans with TUD alone had more concurrent substance use disorders than veterans with both TUD and morbid obesity suggest the possibility that overeating may be a substitute for substance use in the context of TUD. The multimorbidity profile described here may suggest unique treatment needs for individuals with both TUD and morbid obesity. Highlights Medical multimorbidities predict additional health conditions and poorer outcomes. Obesity and tobacco use may share common underlying vulnerabilities. Veterans with both conditions showed higher rates of certain multimorbidities. Obesity may protect against substance use in tobacco users.

(1) To explore the course of participation from two months up to four years after stroke, and (2) to examine if adaptive and maladaptive psychological factors and mood measured at two months after stroke are determinants of the course of participation during this period.

Prospective cohort study in which 369 individuals with stroke were assessed at stroke onset, two months, six months, one year, two years and three to four years after stroke. The Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation (USER-Participation) restrictions subscale was used to measure participation. Psychological factors were clustered into adaptive (proactive coping, self-efficacy, extraversion and optimism) and maladaptive (passive coping, neuroticism and pessimism) psychological factors. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess mood.

Although improvements in participation were observed up to one year after stroke, considerable long-term restrictions in social and physical domains persisted. More mood problems and less adaptive psychological factors were independent determinants of worse participation up to four years after stroke.
