RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs) are RNA sensors that detect viral RNA in the cytosol and induce an IFN-I response. Viral RNAs contain features that set them apart from host RNAs, allowing RLRs to discriminate between cellular/self and viral/non-self RNA. The notion emerged that self RNAs can also engage RLRs and modulate the IFN-I response, indicating that the distinction between self and non-self RNA is not watertight. Discussions covered aspects of the current problem, gaps in knowledge and possible paths forward. Inflammatory biomarkers are associated with negative health outcomes. In this study, we investigated the associations between airborne occupational exposures and levels and changes in inflammatory biomarkers.

We included 79 604 adults at baseline from the Lifelines cohort of which 48 403 (60.8%) subjects were followed for a median of 4.5 years. Airborne occupational exposures at the current or last-held job at baseline were estimated with the occupational asthma-specific job-exposure matrix. Both in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, we used linear regression models (adjusted for age, sex, education, monthly income, body mass index, smoking, pack-years, asthma and anti-inflammatory medication) to investigate the associations between airborne occupational exposures (allergens, reactive chemicals, pesticides and micro-organisms) and inflammatory biomarkers (C reactive protein (CRP), eosinophils and neutrophils).

In the cross-sectional analyses, exposure to allergens, reactive chemicals and micro-oe occupational exposures are inversely associated with inflammation; no effect of occupational exposures on inflammation was found at follow-up. In the future studies, details of occupational exposures, such as duration of exposures and cumulative exposures, need to be included to investigate the airborne occupational exposures and inflammatory biomarkers.

To test the association between physical function and the social environment in multiple sclerosis (MS), we quantified personal social networks.

In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 2 academic MS centers, with center 1 serving as a discovery group and center 2 as the extension group. We performed a meta-analysis of the centers to extend the analysis. We used responses from a questionnaire to map the structure and health habits of participants' social networks as well as the NIH Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) physical function scale (0-100, mean 50 for US general population) as the primary outcome. We applied multivariable models to test the association between network metrics and physical function.
