Healthcare workers are exposed to many hazards. OSHA standards are in place to protect them. It is important that everyone working in this field understands these guidelines.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency charged with protecting the health and safety of employees. For the last 50 years, the organization has been responsible for developing and implementing regulations that govern a wide range of industries. Some of the regulations are fairly comprehensive, while others address specific industries such as the medical industry.

man down alarm One of the most commonly recommended standards is the bloodborne pathogens standard. The standard requires employers to develop a bloodborne pathogens exposure control plan to protect their employees. Failure to develop such a plan is a violation of OSHA standards.

Another standard is the Toxic and Hazardous Substances standard. This regulation addresses the exposure of healthcare workers to hazardous chemicals. These can include ethylene oxide, which is a disinfectant used in surgical equipment.

There are other OSHA standards that apply to medical offices. These include the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and the Toxic and Hazardous Substances Standard. They are meant to provide direct protection from bloodborne pathogens.

OSHA recently published an emergency temporary standard for healthcare facilities. Until January 18, 2022, a new rule will require healthcare facilities to implement a variety of safety measures. In addition to providing employees with protective equipment, this standard will also ensure that workplaces are clean and safe.

While the Emergency Temporary Standard for Healthcare is not a permanent rule, it serves as a stepping stone. Once it expires, OSHA plans to move forward with a permanent rule.
