Finally, some engineering boundaries and perspectives of this fast-evolving field are proposed at the end.Norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is widely used to treat microbial infections. However, untreated norfloxacin-containing wastewater poses serious threats to the ecosystem and human health. The treatment of waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) by landfilling or incineration could cause environmental problems. In this research, the feasibility of converting EPS into a valuable adsorbent for norfloxacin was evaluated. Results showed that EPS treated with H2SO4 (EPSH2SO4) effectively adsorbed norfloxacin. The optimal sulfonation conditions were 95% H2SO4 and 100 °C. Addition of 0.001 M of persulfate during sulfonation obviously shortened the sulfonation time to 7.5 min, and the adsorption ability of modified EPS increased with increasing persulfate dose. Under the experimental conditions of 25 mg L-1 norfloxacin, pH0 6.2, and 0.4 g L-1 EPSH2SO4+persulfate (dry weight), 97.2% of norfloxacin could be removed after 30 min of adsorption. The adsorption ability of EPSH2SO4+persulfate decreased with increasing solution pH0, and the optimal pH0 was 6.2. The Langmuir isotherm best described the adsorption behavior of EPSH2SO4+persulfate (qmax = 140.9 mg L-1, b = 1.97 L mg-1, R2 = 0.9992). 1 M HCl effectively regenerated the exhausted EPSH2SO4+persulfate at the optimal solid/solution ratio of 8 g L-1. EPSH2SO4+persulfate maintained excellent adsorption capacity (>80.9%) after eight adsorption-regeneration cycles.Rhamnolipid was proved to increase the abundance of Thiobacillus denitrificans in the mixotrophic denitrification biofilm while its microscopic mechanism remains to be explored. Effect of rhamnolipids on deposition of macromolecular substances and adhesion of Thiobacillus denitrificans at room (20 °C) and low temperature (10 °C) were systematically investigated by the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) for the first time. Results showed that low concentration of rhamnolipids (20-80 mg/L) could promote the deposition of macromolecular substances by reducing hydraulic repulsion force, with the maximum deposition amount increased by 4.28 times than that of the control at room temperature. Deposition amount of microorganisms could be improved by increasing its concentration at room temperature while it didn't work at low temperature. Meanwhile, low temperature could significantly inhibit adhesion of Thiobacillus denitrificans (p less then 0.05) and deposited layers under low concentration of rhamnolipids were generally rigid, resulting in the negative feedback effect on the microorganisms' adhesion. While high concentration of rhamnolipids (120-200 mg/L) could regulate the biofilm from rigid to viscoelastic and significantly promote the initial adhesion of Thiobacillus denitrificans on SiO2 surface (p less then 0.05). PD123319 Angiotensin Receptor antagonist This study demonstrated the microscopic mechanism of rhamnolipids on the initial biofilm formation, that is, the reduction of hydration repulsion force was responsible for the enhanced deposition of macromolecules while the regulation of biofilm properties was account for the promoted adhesion of Thiobacillus denitrificans.Exploration of renewable materials for efficient elimination of arsenic from water is highly imperative. Herein, one kind of novel porous walnut-like La2O2CO3 composite is reported for the first time, fabricated via direct pyrolysis of La-MOFs at 550 °C under the air atmosphere. The as-synthesized material predominantly consists of La2O2CO3, featuring micrometer-scale walnut-like morphology and an abundant mesoporous structure. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that a pseudo-second-order model with a high correlation coefficient (0.9976-0.9988) can depict this adsorption process in a good manner and indicates chemical adsorption. Analysis of the isotherms further revealed that this adsorption is a monolayer and homogeneous process, with an excellent adsorption capacity (210.1 As mg/g), as calculated from the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated this adsorption process to be a spontaneous and endothermic, with a positive change in entropy. By characterization results, it can be deduced that the anion-exchange interaction (i.e. carbonate is prone to being replaced by arsenate) and inner-sphere complexation were both responsible for arsenate removal. A broad working pH range (3.0-9.0) and a good cyclic performance (removal rate is above 90% for the fourth cycle) as well as an excellent adsorption capacity make this adsorbent a promising arsenic scavenger.Isoprostanes are the potential biomarkers of endogenous human metabolism and proven clinically to provide the quantitative measure of systematic oxidative injury. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric analytical method capable of determining four biomarkers of oxidative stress (8-iso-PGF2α, 2,3-dinor-iPF2α-III, PGE2, and 5-iPF2α-VI) in wastewater was developed and validated. Isoprostanes were quantified in the range of 31.1-1270 ng/L in raw wastewater samples in two communities in western Kentucky and Tennessee during the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consistent detection of PGE2 and 5-iPF2α-VI in wastewater suggested that PGE2 and 5-iPF2α-VI can be a reliable biomarker of community oxidative anxiety. The higher 4-month average mass load of isoprostanes [(ranged from 22.9 mg/d/1000 people to 807 mg/d/1000 people] may be attributed to the elevated community level oxidative anxiety owing COVID-19 uncertainties. The average mass loads of PGE2 and 5-iPF2α-VI in a community were significantly increased (two-tailed p less then 0.001) from the first month of COVID-19 pandemic to the second month; however, significantly decreased (two-tailed p less then 0.001) in the third month. Wastewater-based-epidemiological determination of isoprostanes can be a near-real-time and cost-effective approach of a trend in community depression. This is the first report of the quantification of PGE2 and 5-iPF2α-VI in wastewater and estimation of the community level oxidative anxiety.
