Hydrolysis activity was used as glutaminase and the mutant enzymes gaining glutaryl-7-aminocephalosporanic acid acylase activity were isolated.Geraniol is one of the important aromatic ingredients in alcoholic beverages. Bioconversions of geraniol to other terpenoids and genes involved in the oxidation of geraniol were investigated. Geranic acid and citronellic acid were detected in yeast culture, where geraniol or nerol was added. Addition of citral, a mixture of geranial and neral, resulted in the production of geranic acid and citronellic acid, whereas the addition of citral or citronellal resulted in the production of citronellic acid, suggesting that citronellic acid might be produced through the conversion of citral to citronellal followed by the oxidation of citronellal. Consumption of geraniol and production of geranic acid, citronellic acid, and citronellol were affected in adh1Δ, adh3Δ, adh4Δ, and sfa1Δ yeast strains, which possess single deletion of a gene encoding alcohol dehydrogenase. This is the first report of the bioconversion of monoterpene alcohols, geraniol and nerol, to geranic acid and citronellic acid in yeast culture.Infective endocarditis (IE) is an inflammatory process caused by the implantation of bacteria on the heart valves or wall insertion. Bacteria leading to IE may be caused by oral procedures, such as tooth extractions, periodontal treatments, root canal treatment, scaling and tooth implantation. Antibiotic prophylaxis should only be used in accordance with the recommendations in the high-risk group of IEs, by providing the appropriate antibiotic 30-60 min. Before the planned dental treatment. In addition to appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis, special emphasis should be placed on improving dental care, regular check-ups and planned dental treatment as well as on maintaining proper oral hygiene.Recently surgery first became more popular alternative for treatment of dentofacial deformities. In this approach treatment starts from orthognathic surgery. Immediately after othognathic surgery facial aesthetics and oral function are improved. Thus main complaints of the orthognathic patients are resolved early during treatment period. Indications for surgery first approach are wider than years ago and include skeletal Class II and III malocclusion, skeletal open bite, bimaxillary protrusion, even cases with severe facial asymmetry are reported. The key point for gaining stable results and total treatment time shortening is an appropriate surgical occlusion. For higher precision of treatment 3D virtual planning is recommended. Total treatment time depends on number of contact points in surgical occlusion, number of extracted teeth and postsurgical midline deviation. Surgery first is a good alternative approach in some patients treated for dentofacial deformities. Stability in this approach is similar to conventional method of treatment and both methods result in quality of life improvement. As there is lack of presurgical orthodontics in surgery first approach patients avoid transient deterioration in facial aesthetics and oral function that results in higher satisfaction and shorter total treatment time.Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is a group of lifethreatening diseases, for which early diagnostics, before the development of infectious complications, is extremely important. Newborn screening for SCID with T-cell receptor excision circle (TREC) and kappa-deleting recombination excision circle (KREC) assay for the identification of T- and B-lymphopenia has been implemented in a number of highly developed countries of the world. A number of studies proved the clinical and cost-effectiveness of screening for SCID by using TREC assay. However, both clinical benefits and economic costs for screening may vary depending on country and continent, requiring pilot projects to establish reference values of TREC and KREC levels for the diagnosis of SCID and other diseases associated with T- and B-lymphopenia, as well as determination of cost-effectiveness/costbenefit ratio and expediency of their further implementation. Other challenges, outlined in the article, need to be solved. see more The development of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Ukraine opens up full opportunities for the implementation of newborn screening for SCID. The expediency of conducting a pilot study to determine the most effective method (TREC or TREC/KREC) and the algorithm for SCID detection has been shown.COVID-19 pandemic challenged both public health specialists and authorities to implement non-pharmaceutical interventions aimed at limiting the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infections. The concept of social distancing is about limiting contacts between people, which breaks virus transmission chains, delays the increase in the number of infected people in the population and prevents overloading of health care systems. Many countries, including Poland, implemented a number of interventions aimed at limiting the number of infections and slowing down the tempo of the pandemic's spread. These are, among others, mass-scale testing, isolation of infected individuals, hand hygiene, breath etiquette and wearing mascs. Apart from these, a number of restrictions were enforced to ensure social distancing, such as closing down schools and universities, forbidding organising large parties and mass gatherings, limiting travels and use of public transport, increasing awareness of the public opinion on the necessity to stay at home, up to even introducing full lockdown with only the right to go out to buy food and medication or use the health care system. These interventions were gradually introduced in particular countries, in different ways, to a greater or lesser extent. Their effectiveness is largely influenced by the socio-economic and cultural factors, the nature of political and healthcare systems as well as the operating procedures used during their implementation. The implemented social distancing strategies prove to be effective, especially when combined with such actions as mass-scale testing, tracking contact chains, isolation and quarantine. The current work aims at making an overview of selected social distancing strategies and assessing their effectiveness in slowing down COVID-19 epidemic.
