cesses which is always effective. It is, in the end, the awareness and wisdom of the doctor, selecting from among a range of available approaches, which is at stake. In addition, methodologies should account for the recognition that awareness comes only from reflection, and that helping medical students and doctors alike to reflect is central to good practice.

This study aimed to develop and validate a Portuguese version of the Menopause Representations Questionnaire (MenoSentations-Q), a self-report measure to assess cognitive appraisal of menopause, based on cognitive components of the Self-Regulation Model and the results from a previous Portuguese qualitative study.

A total of 309 Portuguese women, aged 45-65 years, completed the questionnaire. Factorial, convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity, as well as reliability and psychometric sensitivity, were studied.

MenoSentations-Q has demonstrated acceptable factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity, as well as good values of sensitivity and reliability for the four factors (i.e. identity; positive consequences; negative consequences; and control, awareness, and cause). Criterion validity was only obtained for two factors.

MenoSentations-Q, a brief measure of menopausal representations, in this sample of Portuguese women provides information to inform interventions that might include challenging unhelpful menopausal representations. This instrument could be used in both clinical and community settings.

Caregivers who live with a person with dementia who receives care, compared with those who live elsewhere, are often considered to experience greater levels of psychological and affective burden. The evidence for this is, however, only limited to studies employing small sample sizes and that failed to examine caregivers' psychological wellbeing. We address these issues in a large cohort of dementia caregivers.

We conducted a cross-sectional study comparing caregivers living with a dementia care recipient (

= 240) to caregivers living elsewhere (

= 255) on caregivers' burden, anxiety, and depression.

We found that caregivers living with the care recipient relative to those living elsewhere showed significantly greater burden and depression, but we found no group difference in anxiety.

Our study adds to the evidence by showing that cohabiting with a care recipient with dementia is associated with greater burden and poorer psychological wellbeing. Strategies aiming to improve caregivers' burden and psychological wellbeing should take account of caregivers' living arrangements.

More recently, attention has been given to the use of dietary nitrate as a nutritional strategy to optimize muscular performance during resistance exercise. Our purpose was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the research literature assessing the effect of dietary nitrate ingestion on muscular strength and muscular endurance. A structured search was carried out in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and from the total included studies (n = 34 studies), 12 studies had data for both measurement of strength and muscular endurance outcomes, 14 studies had data only for muscular strength outcome, and 8 studies had data only for muscular endurance outcome. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated and meta-analyses were performed by using a random-effects model. Dietary nitrate ingestion was found to result in a trivial but significant effect on muscular strength (overall SMD = 0.08, P = 0.0240). Sodium cholate price Regarding muscular endurance dietary nitrate was found to promote a small but significant effect (overall SMD = 0.31, P  less then  0.0001). Dosage, frequency of ingestion, training level, muscle group, or type of contraction did not affect the findings, except for a greater improvement in muscle endurance during isometric and isotonic when compared to isokinetic contractions. Dietary nitrate seems to have a positive effect on muscular strength and muscular endurance, which is mostly unaffected by dosage, frequency of ingestion, training level, muscle group, or type of contraction. However, given the trivial to small effect, further experimental research on this topic is warranted.Infections with avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) can be extremely detrimental to poultry health and production. Investigating host genetic variation could identify the biological mechanisms that control resistance to this pathogen and allow selection for improved resistance in experimental and commercial poultry populations. In this review, the current knowledge of how host genetics contributes to APEC resistance and future opportunities that would benefit the understanding or application of genetic resistance are discussed. Phenotypes, such as antibody responses, lesion scores, and mortality, revealed that genetic background impacts APEC resistance and interacts with other factors including the environment and challenge conditions. Experiments have used divergent selection for APEC-specific antibody levels to facilitate genetic studies, estimated heritabilities in relevant traits, detected quantitative trait loci using microsatellites, and made associations with sequence variation in the major histocompatibility complex, which collectively suggest that improving APEC resistance through selection is feasible, although genetic control is partial, complex, and highly polygenic. Additionally, functional genomics techniques have identified antimicrobial responses, toll-like receptor and cytokine signalling, and the cell cycle as central pathways in the host response to APEC challenge. Opportunities for future research are discussed, including the expansion of existing lines of research and the application of new technologies that are relevant to the study of host genetics and APEC. This review closes with prospective strategies for improvement of host genetic resistance to APEC.
