The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 first appeared in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and led to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which quickly spread globally. Protocols for surgical patients with COVID-19 were lacking, particularly for pregnant women undergoing cesarean deliveries. Perioperative nurses at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan retrospectively analyzed the perioperative nursing process, including OR preparation, intraoperative care, and OR cleanup, for women with COVID-19 undergoing cesarean deliveries. Preparation involved altering the layout of the surgical suite, educating staff members, providing personal protective equipment, and creating new in-house guidelines to help protect personnel and patients. This article describes how perioperative personnel strategized to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in the OR and presents a multiple-case summary of six pregnant patients with COVID-19 who underwent cesarean deliveries at Tongji Hospital in January and February 2020.Nursing faculty members at one midwestern college provided a professional development opportunity for baccalaureate nursing students by organizing a trip to a nursing association conference (ie, the AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo). Preconference and postconference survey results showed a statistically significant increase in sense-of-belonging scores; and the eta-squared statistic (0.14) indicated a large effect size, suggesting the students' conference attendance enhanced their sense of belonging to the profession. A Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a strong, positive correlation between a student's intention to join a professional organization and his or her belief that membership in a professional organization was important (r = 0.82, n = 26, P less then .001). This type of professional experience may improve students' perception of nursing professionalism, sense of belonging, intention to join a professional organization, and confidence in nursing as a career.Missed nursing care is a concern on inpatient hospital units but has not been adequately explored in the perioperative setting. This cross-sectional study used results from a survey of 1,693 AORN members to investigate the amount and type of missed perioperative nursing care and evaluate associations between reported missed care and facility and nurse characteristics. The survey asked OR nurses how frequently specific care items were missed by themselves or others. Overall, nurses' perceptions of the frequency of missed care was 0.84 on a scale of 0 to 4 (0 = never, 4 = always). The survey items were categorized into five subscales legal requirement, preparation, safety, communication, and closing routine. Nurses reported most missed care in the communication and preparation categories. The number of ORs at a facility, nurse education and job title, and perceptions of staffing adequacy were significantly associated with the perceived amount of missed perioperative nursing care.

Various models have been studied, including flies, worms, fish, rodents, and humans. Our lab has recently used this technology to examine the effect of environmental hypoxia on mammalian heart regeneration. In this chapter, we describe studies of systemic hypoxia in mice. We found that systemic hypoxia can blunt oxidative DNA damage and induce cardiomyocyte proliferation. While our primary interests are focused on cardiovascular research, these hypoxia protocols are applicable to any other organ system.Genetic lineage tracing is accomplished using bi-transgenic mice, where one allele is altered to express Cre recombinase, and another allele encodes a Cre-dependent genetic reporter protein. Once Cre is activated (constitutive or in response to tamoxifen), the marker gene-expressing cells become indelibly labeled by the reporter protein. Therefore, daughter cells derived from labeled cells are permanently labeled even if the marker gene that drove Cre recombinase expression is no longer expressed in these cells. This system is commonly used to label putative progenitor cells and determine the fate of their progeny. Here, we describe the use of c-kit-based genetic lineage-tracing mouse line as an example and discuss caveats for performing these types of experiments. The adult mammalian heart's potential for regeneration is very inefficient. Importantly, adult mammalian cardiomyocytes (CMs) are characterized as a cell population with very limited mitotic potential. Conversely, the neonatal mouse heart possesses a brief, yet robust, regenerative capacity within the first week of life. Cell type-specific enrichment procedures are essential for characterizing the full spectrum of epigenomic landscapes and gene regulatory networks deployed by mammalian CMs. In this chapter, we describe a protocol useful for purifying CM nuclei from mammalian cardiac tissue. Furthermore, we detail a low-input procedure suitable for the parallel genome-wide profiling of chromatin accessibility, histone modifications, and transcription factor-binding sites. The CM nuclei purified using this process are suitable for multi-omic profiling approaches.
