Background/Aims Although the diarrheal disease caused by Campylobacter bacteria has been continuously increasing in Korea, there has been limited study on the clinical aspects of Campylobacter enteritis in adults in Korea. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical features and characteristics of adult patients with Campylobacter enteritis. Methods This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with Campylobacter enterocolitis at Nowon Eulji University Hopsital between January 2016 and December 2017. this website Campylobacter enterocolitis was diagnosed through polymerase chain reaction of stools from patients with acute diarrhea. Results Among 630 hospitalized patients with acute diarrhea, Campylobacter enterocolitis was diagnosed in 88 patients (14.0%). The mean age was 37.9±19.1 years. Campylobacter enterocolitis was most prevalent in the summer (52 patients, 59.1%). Patients exhibited more than 10 times of diarrhea in 36 (40.9%), high fever above 39°C in 19 (21.59%), and abdominal pain above 5 points on the numeric rating scale in 23 (26.14%) cases. In abdominal CT scan, pancolitis was found in 58 patients (65.9%). Small intestine was involved in 37 patients (42.4%). Mean CRP was 10.14 mg/dL (range 0.72-32.27 mg/dL). The duration of diarrhea after antibiotics treatment was 2.34±1.51 days in the ciprofloxacin treatment group and 2.26±1.71 days in the 3rd cephalosporin treatment group. Conclusions Campylobacter enterocolitis was common during summer. Commonly healthy young adults were hospitalized due to severe symptoms of Campylobacter enterocolitis. Whole colon and small bowel were frequently involved. Most patients were treated with antibiotics, and the efficacy of 3rd cephalosporin treatment was not inferior to that of ciprofloxacin treatment.Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. During sepsis, the liver has essential roles, such as immune defense and metabolic adaptation to inflammation. In addition, it is a target for sepsis-related injury, including hypoxic hepatitis, cholestasis, drug-induced liver injury, and secondary sclerosing cholangitis in critically ill patients. In particular, the mortality rate due to sepsis is four times higher in patients with cirrhosis, warranting a high index of suspicion for infection, appropriate diagnosis, and prompt antimicrobial treatment. The most recent definition of sepsis (Sepsis-3) no longer uses systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and is based on the signs of organ dysfunction, which can be assessed by the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and quick SOFA (qSOFA) scores. The qSOFA score can be applied at the bedside before any tests and is believed to be suggestive of sepsis when at least two of the following criteria are met altered consciousness, respiratory rate ≥22/min, and systolic blood pressure ≤100 mmHg. While the qSOFA score performs well in the general population, its role in cirrhotic patients is unclear. This paper briefly reviews the current knowledge of the pathogenesis, definition of sepsis, and sepsis-related liver dysfunction. Furthermore, this review summarizes the clinical applicability of Sepsis-3 in cirrhotic patients.Background Hysterectomy is one of the major gynecologic surgeries. Historically, several surgical procedures have been used for hysterectomy. The present study aims to evaluate the surgical trends and clinical outcomes of hysterectomy performed for benign diseases at the Yeungnam University Hospital. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent a hysterectomy for benign diseases from 2013 to 2018. Data included the patients' demographic characteristics, surgical indications, hysterectomy procedures, postoperative pathologies, and perioperative outcomes. Results A total of 809 patients were included. The three major indications for hysterectomy were uterine leiomyoma, pelvic organ prolapse, and adenomyosis. The most common procedure was total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH, 45.2%), followed by open hysterectomy (32.6%). During the study period, the rate of open hysterectomy was nearly constant (29.4%-38.1%). The mean operative time was the shortest in the single-port laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH, 89.5 minutes), followed by vaginal hysterectomy (VH, 96.8 minutes) and TLH (105 minutes). The mean decrease in postoperative hemoglobin level was minimum in single-port LAVH (1.8 g/dL) and VH (1.8 g/dL). Conversion to open surgery or multi-port surgery occurred in five cases (0.6%). Surgical complications including wound dehiscence, organ injuries, and conditions requiring reoperation were observed in 52 cases (6.4%). Conclusion Minimally invasive approach was used for most hysterectomies for benign diseases, but the rate of open hysterectomy has mostly remained constant. Single-port LAVH and VH showed the most tolerable outcomes in terms of operative time and postoperative drop in hemoglobin level in selected cases.The saphenous vein graft (SVG) remains the most commonly used conduit in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In light of this further research must be aimed at the development of strategies to optimize SVG patency and thereby improve both short- and long-term outcomes of CABG surgery. SVG patency in large part depends on the protection of the structural and functional integrity of the vascular endothelium at the time of conduit harvesting, including optimal storage conditions to prevent endothelial damage. This review provides an overview of currently available storage and preservation solutions, including novel endothelial damage inhibitors, and their role in mitigating endothelial damage and vein graft failure.INTRODUCTION Coronary artery disease among women presents differences in terms of clinical presentation and pathophysiology. To date, women present worse prognoses with more events and higher mortality rate. One the one hand, they are less likely addressed for invasive therapy. One the other hand, revascularization procedures, whether by bypass or by percutaneous coronary intervention, are associated with higher rates of complications and poorer prognosis. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Despite higher risk factor burden and comorbidity, women are less affected by obstructive disease and plaque characteristics are more favorable than among men. Abnormalities of endothelial function and micro vascular flow reserve could explain part of the high prevalence of symptoms of angina observed among women. Due to the worse prognosis of microvascular dysfunction, particularly in women, proper diagnosis is mandatory and deserve invasive management. Outcome following STEMI is still more severe among women with higher in-hospital mortality but sex discrepancies are observed even in elective PCI.
