Individuals with more severe cognitive deficits are more likely to commit violent crimes. Currently, no treatments target improving cognition in high-risk CD youth. This pilot study tests the feasibility and efficacy of delivering intensive tablet-based cognitive training (CT) to adolescent males incarcerated in a youth maximum-security prison. Methods Participants were fourteen adolescent males, diagnosed with CD. SMI-4a All participants completed up to 30 h of unsupervised, intensive, adaptive CT exercises that targeted multiple neurocognitive domains, as well as a battery of standardized neurocognitive measures and computerized assessments at baseline and post-training. Conclusions and Implications for Practice At baseline, participants exhibited significant impairments on neurocognitive measures, relative to age-matched healthy controls. Twelve participants completed training and showed evidence of target engagement, as indexed by improvement in cognitive processing speed. Significant gains were observed in measures of global cognition, with additional gains in cognitive flexibility at trend level significance. Improvements in these measures were positively related to total training time. In summary, both assessments and intervention appear to be feasible, tolerable, and acceptable in incarcerated youth. Intensive CT shows preliminary efficacy in improving neurocognitive performance in key domains, with large effect sizes, and significant performance improvement associations with the time in training. Depression can be a main consequence of interpersonal trauma, which subsequently results in various negative mental health outcomes. Previous research has investigated the independent effects of interpersonal trauma, interpersonal relationships and physical exercise on the risk of depression. However, the interaction effect of the three factors on depression remains unclear. We aim to investigate the associations between these potential factors and depression in adolescents, and explore the interaction effect of the three aforementioned factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shenzhen, China, in 2017. A total of 1,883 adolescents from 11 middle schools and high schools were recruited. Demographic information, depressive symptoms, physical exercise, interpersonal relationships, interpersonal trauma, and academic record were collected through the use of standardized questionnaires. This study is designed to systematically and comprehensively investigate two practical aspects of fractal analysis which significantly affect the outcome the series length and the parameters used in the algorithm. The Hurst exponent, scaling exponent, and/or fractal dimension are computed from both simulated and experimental data using three fractal methods, namely detrended fluctuation analysis, box-counting dimension, and Higuchi's fractal dimension. The advantages and drawbacks of each method are discussed, in terms of biases and variability. The results demonstrate that a careful selection of fractal analysis methods and their parameters is required, which is dependent on the aim of study (either analyzing differences between experimental groups or estimating an accurate determination of fractal features). A set of guidelines for the selection of the fractal methods and the length of stride interval time series is provided, along with the optimal parameters for a robust implementation for each method. Although ATP production has become a focal point of research in bioenergetics, mitochondrial thermogenesis is also crucial for energy metabolism. Mitochondria generate heat due to H+ leak across the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) which is mediated by mitochondrial uncoupling proteins. The mitochondrial H+ leak was first identified, and studied for many decades, using mitochondrial respiration technique. Unfortunately, this method measures H+ leak indirectly, and its precision is insufficient for the rigorous insight into the mitochondrial function at the molecular level. Direct patch-clamp recording of H+ leak would have a significantly higher amplitude and time resolution, but application of the patch-clamp technique to a small subcellular organelle such as mitochondria has been challenging. We developed a method that facilitates patch-clamp recording from the whole IMM, enabling the direct measurement of small H+ leak currents via uncoupling proteins and thus, providing a rigorous understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved. Effective pest management strategies can be developed by understanding the host location mechanism and the physiological functions of OBPs in olfactory detection. In this study, we cloned two OBPs from Monochamus alternatus, where MaltOBP9 was highly expressed in multiple insect tissues and MaltOBP10 was highly expressed in the female antenna according to the results of qRT-PCR. The recombinant proteins were successfully purified in vitro. Immunocytochemistry indicated the high expression of MaltOBP9 and MaltOBP10 in the sensillum lymph of sensilla basiconica, sensilla trichodea, sensilla auricillica, and sensilla chaetica, thereby demonstrating their broad participation in semiochemical detection. Both proteins were localized in the inner cavity of mechanoreceptors and they exhibited broad binding abilities with volatiles from pine bark according to fluorescence competitive binding assays. Due to its broad binding ability and distribution, MaltOBP9 may be involved in various physiological processes as well as olfactory detection.
