Today, student midwives in Sweden spend half of their midwifery education at various internships. Practice reality demonstrates that there is an insufficient number of preceptors for the students, and the workload is demanding. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the experiences of final term Swedish students during their midwifery internship and whether other paedagogical learning experiences beyond the apprenticeship model were included. A cross-sectional survey was distributed to 288 final year midwifery students at all universities offering the midwifery programme in Sweden. This paper focuses on open-ended questions, which were answered by 108 students, and analysed inductively via thematic analysis. Students described an intensive period with pressure during their internship. They expressed a desire for fewer parallel tasks and a better-structured internship. The response of the central nervous system (CNS) to a SARS-CoV-2 infection may be influenced by its inflammatory state. Interestingly, environmental pollutants such as particulate matter may have neuroinflammatory effects, providing a possible link between exposure to these pollutants and the outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the CNS. This article explores the hypothesis that the neurologic symptoms in COVID-19 may be exacerbated through a neuroinflammatory mechanism that is promoted by environmental pollutant exposure.Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have shown potential as non-invasive breath biomarkers for lung cancer, but their unclear biological origin currently limits clinical applications. This systematic review explores headspace analysis of VOCs in patient-derived body fluids and lung cancer cell lines to pinpoint lung cancer-specific VOCs and uncover their biological origin. A search was performed in the databases MEDLINE and Web of Science. Twenty-two articles were included in this systematic review. Since there is no standardised approach to analyse VOCs, a plethora of techniques and matrices/cell lines were explored, which is reflected in the various VOCs identified. However, comparing VOCs in the headspace of urine, blood and pleural effusions from patients and lung cancer cell lines showed some overlapping VOCs, indicating their potential use in lung cancer diagnosis. This review demonstrates that VOCs are promising biomarkers for lung cancer. However, due to lack of inter-matrix consensus, standardised prospective trials will have to be conducted to validate clinically relevant biomarkers.Ferricyanide is often used in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to avoid oxygen intrusion that occurs with air cathodes. However, MFC internal resistances using ferricyanide can be larger than those with air cathodes even though ferricyanide results in higher power densities. Using a graphite fiber brush cathode and a ferricyanide catholyte (FC-B) the internal resistance was 62 ± 4 mΩ m2, with 84 ± 8 mΩ m2 obtained using ferricyanide and a flat carbon paper cathode (FC-F) and only 51 ± 1 mΩ m2 using a 70% porosity air cathode (A-70). The FC-B MFCs produced the highest maximum power density of all configurations examined 2.46 ± 0.26 W/m2, compared to 1.33 ± 0.14 W/m2 for the A-70 MFCs. The electrode potential slope (EPS) analysis method showed that electrode resistances were similar for ferricyanide and air-cathode MFCs, and that higher power was due to the larger experimental working potential (500 ± 12 mV) of ferricyanide compared to the air cathode (233 ± 5 mV).Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a process that can efficiently degrade organic waste into renewable energies. AD failure is however common as the underpinning microbial mechanisms are highly vulnerable to a wide range of inhibitory compounds. Sequencing technologies enable the identification of microbial indicators of digesters inhibition, but existing studies are limited. They used different inocula, substrates, sites and types of reactors and reported different or contradictory indicators. Our aim was to identify a robust signature of microbial indicators of phenol and ammonia inhibitions across four independent AD microbial studies. To identify such signature, we applied an original multivariate integrative method on two in-house studies, then validated our approach by predicting the inhibitory status of samples from two other studies with more than 90% accuracy. Our approach shows how we can efficiently leverage on existing studies to extract reproducible microbial community patterns and predict AD inhibition to improve AD microbial management.A 50-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with abrupt massive epistaxis.
