Importance Obesity in adolescence has reached epidemic proportions around the world, with the prevalence of severe obesity increasing at least 4-fold over the last 35 years. Most youths with obesity carry their excess adiposity into adulthood, which places them at increased risk for developing obesity-driven complications, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and negatively affects social and emotional health. Given that adolescence is a unique transition period marked by significant physiologic and developmental changes, obesity-related complications can also negatively affect adolescent growth and developmental trajectories. Observations Provision of evidence-based treatment options that are tailored and appropriate for the adolescent population is paramount, yet complex. The multifactorial etiology of obesity along with the significant changes that occur during the adolescent period increasingly complicate the treatment approach for adolescent obesity. Treatment practices discussed in this review include an overview of evidence supporting currently available behavioral, pharmacologic, surgical, and device interventions for obesity. However, it is important to note that these practices have not been effective at reducing adolescent obesity at the population level. Conclusions and Relevance Because adolescent obesity requires lifelong treatment, effectively addressing this disease will require significant resources, scientific rigor, and the provision of access to quality care similar to other chronic health conditions. Effective and less invasive therapies, effective adjuncts, and comprehensive centers that offer specialized treatment are critical. This considerable need for increased attention to obesity care calls for dedicated resources in both education and research for treatment of obesity in youths.BACKGROUND Although seasonal variation of home blood pressure (BP) has been reported to be higher in winter, seasonal difference in home BP (HBP) and its association with target organ damage (TOD) remains unclear. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study using the dataset from the Japan Morning Surge-Home Blood Pressure (J-HOP) study to assess seasonal differences in HBP, prevalence of masked hypertension, and association of HBP with TOD. The J-HOP study is a nationwide, multicenter prospective study whose participants with cardiovascular risks underwent morning and evening HBP measurements for a 14-day period in 71 institutions throughout Japan. learn more Urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) and serum-B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) were obtained at enrollment. RESULTS Among 4,267 participants (mean age, 64.9 ± 10.9 years; 46.9% male; 91.4% hypertensives), 1,060, 979, 1,224, and 1,004 participants were enrolled in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. Morning and evening home systolic/diastolic BP levels, and prevalence of masked hypertension (office BP less then 140/90 mm Hg and HBP ≥135/85 mm Hg) were significantly lower in summer than other seasons after adjustment for covariates. When we assessed the interaction between BP parameters and each season for an association with TOD, we found the association between morning home diastolic BP and each of UACR and BNP was stronger in winter than other seasons (both P for interaction less then 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In this study, we revealed that the prevalence of masked hypertension was higher in other seasons than in summer and found a notable association between morning home diastolic BP and TOD in winter. © American Journal of Hypertension, Ltd 2020. For Permissions, please email journals.permissions@oup.com.INTRODUCTION The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act requires cigarette packages and advertisements to bear health warnings with "color graphics depicting the negative health consequences of smoking." AIMS AND METHODS This study assessed whether new US Food and Drug Administration developed pictorial cigarette warnings (PCW) increased understanding of smoking-related risks relative to the current Surgeon General's (SG) warnings. In March-May 2019, adolescent and adult smokers and nonsmokers participated in an online experiment with three sessions completed over approximately 2 weeks. Participants viewed 1 of 16 PCW (treatment conditions) or an SG warning (control) on mock cigarette packages and advertisements. Measures assessed whether warnings provided new information, induced thinking about risks, changed smoking-related health beliefs, and were accurately recalled, among other outcomes. RESULTS The majority of PCW (≥13 conditions) resulted in greater learning of new information, higher self-randing of smoking-related risks relative to existing SG warnings. Results suggest that most PCW tested, particularly those related to less widely known health effects, resulted in greater learning of new information, higher self-reported learning, and greater reports of thinking about smoking risks compared with SG warnings. These results, along with other factors, informed the US Food and Drug Administration's selection of proposed PCW.
