A Gram-stain-negative, orange-colored bacterium, designated HX-22-17T, was isolated from activated sludge of an agricultural chemical plant in Maanshan, Anhui province, China (118° 52' E 31° 68' N). The strain was strictly aerobic, non-endospore forming, non-motile, and ellipse. Growth of the strain was observed at 16-42 °C (optimum between 25 and 30 °C) at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum at pH 7.0) and with 0-6.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum at 1.0%). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strain was most closely related to Rudanella lutea KACC 12603T (99.5% similarity). The predominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C161ω7c and/or C161ω6c), iso-C150, and anteiso-C150. The major polar lipids included posphatidylethanolamine (PE), aminolipid (AL), and phospholipids (PL). The genomic DNA G+C content of the strain was 54.1 mol%. The ANI and dDDH values obtained between the genomes of HX-22-17T and R. lutea KACC 12603T were 89.3% and 39.3%, respectively. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic data clearly showed that strain HX-22-17T represents a novel species of the genus Rudanella, for which the name R. paleaurantiibacter sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HX-22-17T (=KCTC 72656T = CCTCC AB 2019347T).The water kefir grains are a multi-species starter culture used to produce fermented beverages of sucrose solution with or without fruit extracts. The water kefir grains are known in Mexico as Tibicos, which are mainly used to produce Tepache, a traditional Mexican drink made by fermenting pineapple peel. The microbiota of Tibicos mainly include lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and since most probiotics belong to this group, Tibicos may represent a potential source of probiotic bacteria. Moreover, several bacteria isolated from kefir samples have been recognized as probiotics. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the probiotic properties of a Lactobacillus strain isolated from Tibicos. The isolated, designed as CT12, was identified as Lactobacillus paracasei by sequencing 16S RNA gene. L. paracasei CT12 showed a survival rate of ca. 57% and 40% following simulated gastric and intestinal digestion, respectively. Besides, the strain was sensitive to ampicillin and erythromycin, and exhibited hydrophobicity (97-99%), autoaggregation (ca. 70%) and mucin adhesion properties (up to 90%), while no possessed haemolytic capacity. Furthermore, its cell-free supernatant displayed relevant antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant capacity. Nevertheless, how cortical regions in human ventral temporal cortex (VTC), which is critical for categorization, support this behavioral ability, is largely unknown. Here, we examined the relationship between neural responses and behavioral performance during the categorization of morphed silhouettes of faces and hands, which are animate categories processed in cortically adjacent regions in VTC. Our results reveal that the combination of neural responses from VTC face- and body-selective regions more accurately explains behavioral categorization than neural responses from either region alone. Furthermore, we built a model that predicts a person's behavioral performance using estimated parameters of brain-behavior relationships from a different group of people. Moreover, we show that this brain-behavior model generalizes to adjacent face- and body-selective regions in lateral occipitotemporal cortex.
