CrPO4‧6H2O and Cr5(P3O10)3 precipitates were particularly identified by XRD analysis. After screening supplementation with five phosphor salts, Cr(VI) reduction due to bioprecipitation was improved by the addition of Na4P2O7 and (NaPO3)6 salts, with the Cr(VI)-reduction rate combined with Na4P2O7 addition being 15% higher than that of the control. Thus, this study proposes a new Cr(VI)-removal strategy based on the combined use of photosynthetic bacteria and phosphor salts, which importantly increases its potential application in treating wastewater. This study aimed to investigate the status of caregiver burden among informal caregivers of hospitalized frail older patients and explore the associated factors. A total of 191 frail older patients and their informal caregivers were recruited from the inpatient units of the three teaching hospitals. We collected data using the FRAIL scale, the Zarit Burden Interview, and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. We used descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression for the data analysis. The caregivers of hospitalized frail older patients experienced a moderate caregiver burden (26.476±11.289). The regression model for caregiver burden was significant. Male caregivers, taking care of patients before hospitalization, experiencing negative emotions, and negative coping styles were significantly associated with caregiver burden, F (7, 183) = 15.13, p less then . 001. The findings suggest that early identification of caregiver burden and focused interventions for alleviating caregiver burden are needed.One-carbon metabolism is crucial for the maintenance of healthy pregnancy and alterations in this pathway have been associated with various pregnancy-related complications. Therefore, the present study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the altered folic acid, vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels are associated with the risk of early pregnancy loss (EPL). Plasma folic acid, vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels were analyzed in 83 females with EPL and 70 healthy pregnant females in their first trimester. Further, meta-analyses of folic acid, vitamin B12 and homocysteine were also performed involving various eligible studies. Results from our case-control study and meta-analysis showed that folic acid deficiency is not associated with the risk of EPL. On the other hand, low vitamin B12 and hyperhomocysteinemia were individually found to be significant risk factors for EPL in the present study (P less then .01, P less then .05, respectively) and meta-analysis as well (P less then .001, P less then .05, respectively). Vitamin B12 deficiency in combination with hyperhomocysteinemia was a more serious risk factor for EPL (Odds Ratio = 4.98, P = 0.002). Therefore, we conclude that vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels are independent risk factors for EPL, and of higher risk when combined. The assessment of vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels may serve as a good screening marker for EPL risk.Severe acute malnutrition (SAM), due to poor energy and/or protein intake, is associated with poor growth, depressed immune function, and long-term impacts on metabolic function. As the liver is a major metabolic organ and malnutrition poses metabolic stress, we hypothesize that SAM will be associated with alterations in the hepatic metabolome reflective of oxidative stress, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis. Thus, the purpose of this secondary analysis was to understand how SAM alters hepatic metabolism using a piglet model. Weanling piglets were feed either a reference (REF) or protein-energy deficient diet (MAL) for 5 weeks. After dietary treatment MAL piglets were severely underweight (weight-for-age Z-score of -3.29, Welch's t test, P = .0007), moderately wasted (weight-for-length Z-score of-2.49, Welch's t test, P = .003), and tended toward higher hepatic triglyceride content (Welch's t test, P = .07). Hematologic and blood biochemical measurements were assessed at baseline and after dietary treatment. The hepatic metabolome was investigated using 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Selleckchem Tomivosertib Hepatic concentrations of betaine, cysteine, and glutathione tended to be lower in MAL (Welch's t test with FDR correction, P less then .1), while inosine, lactate, and methionine sulfoxide concentrations were higher in MAL (inosine P = .0448, lactate P = .0258, methionine sulfoxide P = .0337). These changes suggest that SAM is associated with elevated hepatic oxidative stress, increased gluconeogenesis, and alterations in 1-carbon metabolism.Lutein exhibits effective antioxidant activity conferring protective action against oxidative stress in age-related macular degeneration and cognitive decline. The inability to synthesize these compounds by the human body and the necessity to combat day-to-day oxidative stress prioritizes daily consumption of lutein. However, the bioavailability of the orally consumed lutein largely depends on its gastrointestinal absorption and subsequent metabolism which is in turn governed by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. One of the most important yet least studied factors is the genetic make-up of an individual. The proteins that partake in the absorption, transportation, metabolism and excretion of lutein are encoded by the genes that experience inter-individual variability. Reports suggest that the unanimous effect of phenotypes resulting from such inter-individual variability in the genes of interest causes modulation of lutein bioavailability which is discussed in detail in this review article. However, despite the available reports, a community-based approach to a larger population is required to obtain a stronger understanding of the relationship between inter-individual variability among these genes and lutein bioavailability. Such an understanding of nutrigenetics could not only pave a way to decipher mechanisms that modulate lutein bioavailability but also help in setting the dosage requirements of each patient.Membrane filtration in various forms has become an increasingly used treatment method worldwide for the supply of safe drinking water. The fouling of membranes is commonly considered to be the major operational limitation to its wider application since it leads to frequent backwashing and a shortening of membrane life, and increased production costs. The components of natural organic matter (NOM) in surface waters have been reported previously to be important foulants of nanofiltration (NF) membranes, however, the potential beneficial effect of particular components of these 'foulants' has not been investigated or demonstrated to date. In this study, we have considered the roles of different organic materials including autochthonous NOM (e.g., biopolymers) and allochthonous NOM (e.g., humic substances) on the fouling of NF membranes by bench-scale tests with samples of two representative source waters (UK) taken in two different seasons (autumn and winter). Microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) were employed to generate two permeates, between which the presence of biopolymers (30 kDa - 90 kDa) is the major difference.
