We report demonstrations of both quadrature-squeezed vacuum and photon number difference squeezing generated in an integrated nanophotonic device. Squeezed light is generated via strongly driven spontaneous four-wave mixing below threshold in silicon nitride microring resonators. The generated light is characterized with both homodyne detection and direct measurements of photon statistics using photon number-resolving transition-edge sensors. We measure 1.0(1) decibels of broadband quadrature squeezing (~4 decibels inferred on-chip) and 1.5(3) decibels of photon number difference squeezing (~7 decibels inferred on-chip). Nearly single temporal mode operation is achieved, with measured raw unheralded second-order correlations g(2) as high as 1.95(1). Multiphoton events of over 10 photons are directly detected with rates exceeding any previous quantum optical demonstration using integrated nanophotonics. These results will have an enabling impact on scaling continuous variable quantum technology. The properties of van der Waals heterostructures are drastically altered by a tunable moiré superlattice arising from periodically varying atomic alignment between the layers. Exciton diffusion represents an important channel of energy transport in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). While early studies performed on TMD heterobilayers suggested that carriers and excitons exhibit long diffusion, a rich variety of scenarios can exist. #link# In a moiré crystal with a large supercell and deep potential, interlayer excitons may be completely localized. As selleckchem reduces at a larger twist angle, excitons can tunnel between supercells and diffuse over a longer lifetime. The diffusion should be the longest in commensurate heterostructures where the moiré superlattice is completely absent. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the rich phenomena of interlayer exciton diffusion in WSe2/MoSe2 heterostructures by comparing several samples prepared with chemical vapor deposition and mechanical stacking with accurately controlled twist angles.Three-dimensional (3D) chromatin organization plays a key role in regulating mammalian genome function; however, many of its physical features at the single-cell level remain underexplored. Here, we use live- and fixed-cell 3D super-resolution and scanning electron microscopy to analyze structural and functional nuclear organization in somatic cells. We identify chains of interlinked ~200- to 300-nm-wide chromatin domains (CDs) composed of aggregated nucleosomes that can overlap with individual topologically associating domains and are distinct from a surrounding RNA-populated interchromatin compartment. High-content mapping uncovers confinement of cohesin and active histone modifications to surfaces and enrichment of repressive modifications toward the core of CDs in both hetero- and euchromatic regions. This nanoscale functional topography is temporarily relaxed in postreplicative chromatin but remarkably persists after ablation of cohesin. Our findings establish CDs as physical and functional modules of mesoscale genome organization.Ultrastrong materials can notably help with improving the energy efficiency of transportation vehicles by reducing their weight. Grain refinement by severe plastic deformation is, so far, the most effective approach to produce bulk strong nanostructured metals, but its scaling up for industrial production has been a challenge. Here, we report an ultrastrong (2.15 GPa) low-carbon nanosteel processed by heterostructure and interstitial mediated warm rolling. The nanosteel consists of thin (~17.8 nm) lamellae, which was enabled by two unreported mechanisms (i) improving deformation compatibility of dual-phase heterostructure by adjusting warm rolling temperature and (ii) segregating carbon atoms to lamellar boundaries to stabilize the nanolamellae. Defying our intuition, warm rolling produced finer lamellae than cold rolling, which demonstrates the potential and importance of tuning deformation compatibility of interstitial containing heterostructure for nanocrystallization. This previously unreported approach is applicable to most low-carbon, low-alloy steels for producing ultrahigh strength materials in industrial scale.Silicic volcanic activity has long been framed as either violently explosive or gently effusive. However, recent observations demonstrate that explosive and effusive behavior can occur simultaneously. Here, we propose that rhyolitic magma feeding subaerial eruptions generally fragments during ascent through the upper crust and that effusive eruptions result from conduit blockage and sintering of the pyroclastic products of deeper cryptic fragmentation. Our proposal is supported by (i) rhyolitic lavas are volatile depleted; (ii) textural evidence supports a pyroclastic origin for effusive products; (iii) numerical models show that small ash particles ≲10-5 m can diffusively degas, stick, and sinter to low porosity, in the time available between fragmentation and the surface; and (iv) inferred ascent rates from both explosive and apparently effusive eruptions can overlap. Our model reconciles previously paradoxical observations and offers a new framework in which to evaluate physical, numerical, and geochemical models of Earth's most violent volcanic eruptions.
Both cognitive reserve and subjective cognitive decline are closely related to the risk of dementia. We investigated whether cognitive reserve can modify the risk of dementia developing from subjective cognitive decline.
Longitudinal population-based study.
The prospective study analyzed data from 2099 participants aged 65 or over from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study-Wales (CFAS-Wales).
Dementia was ascertained through the comprehensive judgment symptoms of geriatric mental state automated geriatric examination for computer assisted taxonomy (GMS-AGECAT). Subjective cognitive decline was evaluated by 2 questions in the baseline interview. Cognitive reserve indicators were derived from 3 previously identified factors early life education, mid-life occupational complexity, and late-life cognitive activities. We used logistic regression models to estimate dementia risk in relation to subjective cognitive decline and indicators of cognitive reserve. The interaction between subjective cognitive decline and cognitive reserve were evaluated by additive and multiplicative scales.
