Background Hematoma is the chief culprit in brain injury following intracranial cerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Noninvasive hematoma clearance could be an option to prevent and alleviate early brain injury after ICH. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2 related factor-2 (Nrf2) facilitate removal of hematoma in ICH. Monascin acts as the natural Nrf2 activator with PPAR-γ agonist, and the long-term effects of monascin following ICH have not been elucidated. Methods ICH in rats was induced by stereotactic, intrastriatal injection of type IV collagenase. Monascin was administered twice daily by gastric perfusion for 14 days after ICH induction. Long-term neurological scores (T maze, Garcia scales, rotor rod test, and Morris water maze), hematoma volume, as well as iron overload around hematoma and brain atrophy were evaluated at 7, 14, and 28 days after ICH. Results The results showed that monascin improved long-term neurological deficits, spatial memory performance, learning ability, and brain shrinkage after ICH. Monascin also reduced hematoma volume at 7 days and iron content at 7 and 14 days after ICH. Conclusion PPAR γ and Nrf2 play a crucial role in hematoma clearance after ICH in rat. As a dual agonist of PPAR γ and Nrf2, monascin improved long-term outcomes by facilitating hematoma clearance, and by attenuating iron overload and brain atrophy after experimental ICH.Upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy contributes a major clinical service with consistently growing demand around the world. Its utility corresponds to varying epidemiological issues throughout the globe, with cancer screening and surveillance being of the utmost priority. Despite high accuracy in neoplasia detection, UGI endoscopy remains a highly operator-dependent procedure, characterized by a substantial rate of missed pathology. Despite an overall lack of high-quality performance measures, there is an increased level of awareness about the need for quality control of this procedure, which is reflected in several guidelines and position statements published in recent years. It is widely recognized that quality assessment should go beyond mere technical aspects of the examination, and include both pre- and post-procedural factors. By this means, quality control encompasses the entire patient experience with the health care provider, from appropriate indication and physical assessment, through high-quality endoscopy service, to appropriate follow up and patient satisfaction. This article aims to review the available and emerging quality metrics for UGI endoscopy, taken mostly from Western endoscopy societies, with references to Asian recommendations where appropriate. The paper is limited solely to diagnostic UGI endoscopy and does not include performance measures for therapeutic procedures. Background Although bioethanol production has been gaining worldwide attention as an alternative to fossil fuel, ethanol productivities and yields are still limited due to the susceptibility of fermentation microorganisms to various stress and inhibitory substances. There is therefore an unmet need to search for multi-stress-tolerant organisms to improve ethanol productivity and reduce production cost, particularly when lignocellulosic hydrolysates are used as the feedstock. Results Here, we have characterized a previously isolated Pichia kudriavzevii LC375240 strain which is thermotolerant to high temperatures of 37 °C and 42 °C. NSC 127870 More excitingly, growth and ethanol productivity of this strain exhibit strong tolerance to multiple stresses such as acetic acid, furfural, formic acid, H2O2 and high concentration of ethanol at 42 °C. In addition, simple immobilization of LC375240 on corncobs resulted to a more stable and higher efficient ethanol production for successive four cycles of repeated batch fermentation at 42 °C. Conclusion The feature of being thermotolerant and multi-stress-tolerant is unique to P. kudriavzevii LC375240 and makes it a good candidate for second-generation bioethanol fermentation as well as for investigating the molecular basis underlying the robust stress tolerance. Immobilization of P. kudriavzevii LC375240 on corncobs is another option for cheap and high ethanol productivity. Background To investigate high-risk HPV (hr-HPV) genotype distributions and the association between hr-HPV infection with severity of the cervical lesions in women with normal cytology. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the result of the hr-HPV test and biopsy of colposcopy of women with normal cytology from January 2012 to January 2019 were analyzed. The detection rate of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and cervical cancer were calculated among different hr-HPV genotypes, viral load group, and age groups. Results Five thousand eight hundred eighty women were enrolled in this study. Overall, 59.97% had normal histological results, 19.32% had HSIL, and 1.07% had cervical cancer. The detection rate of HSIL or worse (HSIL+) in women with single HPV16(34.00%), HPV31(27.50%), HPV33(25.58%), and HPV52(20.88%) infection were higher significantly than single HPV18 (15.59%) infection, respectively. The HSIL+ detection rate between HPV16 single infection and multiple infections (excluding HPV18) was no significant difference (34% vs 35.47%, P = 0.638), contrary to HPV18(12.59% vs 21.67%, P = 0.022). In women without HPV16/18 infections, HSIL+ detection rates for single, double, and triple or more hr-HPV infections were 12.28, 20.31, and 37.50%, the risk of detection of HSIL+ significantly increasing. With the hr-HPV DNA load increases, the risk of detection of HSIL+ (χ2 = 91.01, P 60 group, HSIL+ detection rate were 24.80%、22.10%、19.59%、14.29, and 12.61%, respectively. Conclusion Women who have normal cytology with HPV 16/18/31/33/52/58 infections, multiple HPV infections and high viral load, have a higher detection rate of HSIL+.Background Freezing resistant plant organs are capable to manage ice formation, ice propagation, and ice accommodation down to variable temperature limits without damage. Insights in ice management strategies are essential for the fundamental understanding of plant freezing and frost survival. However, knowledge about ice management is scarce. Ice crystal localisation inside plant tissues is challenging and is mainly based on optical appearance of ice in terms of colour and shape, investigated by microscopic methods. Notwithstanding, there are major uncertainties regarding the reliability and accuracy of ice identification and localisation. Surface light reflections, which can originate from water or resin, even at non-freezing temperatures, can have a similar appearance as ice. We applied the principle of birefringence, which is a property of ice but not of liquid water, in reflected-light microscopy to localise ice crystals in frozen plant tissues in an unambiguous manner. Results In reflected-light microscopy, water was clearly visible, while ice was more difficult to identify.
