This study aimed to identify long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) involving in the skeletal muscle aging process. Skeletal muscle samples from old and young subjects were collected for lncRNA-sequencing. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and DElncRNAs between young and old groups were identified and a co-expression network was built. Further, a dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy cell model was established to characterize the function of a critical lncRNA. A total of 424 DEGs, including 271 upregulated genes and 153 downregulated genes as well as 152 DElncRNAs including 76 up-regulated and 76 down-regulated lncRNAs were obtained. Functional analysis demonstrated that the DEGs were significantly related to immune response. Coexpression network demonstrated lncRNA AC004797.1, PRKG1-AS1 and GRPC5D-AS1 were crucial lncRNAs. Their expressions were further validated by qRT-PCR in human skeletal muscle and the muscle atrophy cell model. Further in vitro analysis suggested that knock-down of PRKG1-AS1 could significantly increase cell viability and decrease cell apoptosis. qRT-PCR and western blot analyses demonstrated that knock-down of PRKG1-AS1 could increase the expression of MyoD, MyoG and Mef2c. This study demonstrated that lncRNAs of GPRC5D-AS1, AC004797.1 and PRKG1-AS1 might involve the aging-associated disease processes.Leptotrichia species are fastidious anaerobic, fusiform, pencil-shaped Gram-negative bacilli that reside in microbiota of humans. Leptotrichia species have increasingly been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in humans, mainly in the immunocompromised patient. Anaerobic organisms have rarely been isolated from blood cultures of pediatric patients. In our study, we isolated Leptotrichia trevisanii from central venous catheter culture of a five-year-old male patient. It was identified with both matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and confirmed via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The early recognition of anaerobic bacteremia and administration of appropriate antimicrobial and play an important role preventing mortality and morbidity in children. In our study we report a rarely diagnosed case of L. trevisanii bacteremia in a pediatric patient.

Malaria, a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Nigerian children, is associated with biochemical, haematological, blood flow and clinical multiorgan changes, including changes in the spleen and the liver.

To investigate hepatosplenic pathologies in a Nigerian children cohort with acute P. falciparum malaria.

A prospective case-control study of 260 children (65 uncomplicated malaria (UCM),65 complicated malaria (CM) cases and 130 controls) aged six months to six years. All subjects had laboratory tests and hepatosplenic parenchymal and blood-flow ultrasonographic evaluation.

Mean splenic length was 8.13cm (95% CI 7.84cm, 8.41cm) and 7.42cm (95% CI 7.13cm, 7.71cm) in CM and UCM (p=0.001) respectively, liver span was significantly different in controls and CM (p<0.001); controls and UCM (p=0.014). Portal vein flow velocity was 32.5cm/s, 25.4cm/s and 26.5cm/s in controls, UCM and CM (p=<0.001 and 0.004 respectively) while splenic flow velocity was 30.7cm/s and 25.8cm/s in controls and CM (p=0.022). selleck chemicals Splenic artery peak systolic velocity (PSV) =73.78cm/s, 66.52cm/s and 59.35cm/s (p = 0.008) among controls, UCM and CM respectively. There was significant correlation between malaria parasite (MP) density and splenic length (r =0.239, p = 0.007), splenic artery pulsatility index (PI) (r = 0.300, p = 0.001), splenic artery resistivity index (RI) (r = 0.260, p = 0.003) and liver span.

In children with acute malaria, the splenic vessels and portal vein blood flow velocities were reduced. High malaria parasite density evokes direct relationship with spleen and liver span, splenic artery RI and PI and portalvein diameter.

Many training institutions also retain the long case examination. Over the years, the Faculty made far-reaching changes in this method of examination geared towards the improvement of its performance indices of reliability, validity and fairness. The current paper traces the modifications that have taken place so far including the use of a structured, weighted grading format. It also discusses the need for further modifications including observation of the candidate during the "clerking" period and the practicality of video recording. Use of formats like that of the West African College is recommended for institutions still using the long case. Each institution should weigh the practicability of specific suggested modifications in the light of its circumstances.

Infertility could be a life crisis with a wide range of social, emotional and psychological problems. This study aimed to contribute towards improving the health outcomes of infertile women by determining the association between family function and psychological wellbeing amongst infertile women.

This was a cross sectional study conducted at the YDMH, Kaduna. The participants were 254 women who presented to the gynecology clinic. Perceived Family APGAR assessment tool was used to determine the level of family function. Their psychological well-being was determined by administering the GHQ-12 instrument. Data was analysed using the EPI-INFO statistical package.

Most participants were Hausas (70.1%), Muslims (91.7%), and unemployed (52.8%) with an average monthly income of less than N20,000 (73.6%). Most were within the age group of 25-30 years (40.2%), and from monogamous families (70.1%) with most families having 0-5 children (89.4%). Most participants, 110(43.3%) were from functional families, 89(35.0%) from moderately dysfunctional families and 55(21.7%) from highly dysfunctional families. There was a significant association between family function and psychological distress (p-value=0.000 and 2=67.742).

Adequate family function reduces stress and improves the psychological wellbeing of infertile women.
