To evaluate the incidence of brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) in a large, single cohort and stratify clinical 1-year outcomes.
A cohort study of all births occurring at a single institution between 2011 and 2015. Hospital discharge papers were analyzed, and structured telephone interviews were conducted.
Among 76,000 livebirths, 98 (0.13%) cases of BPBP were diagnosed. Of cases who fully responded to interview (66/98), at 3 months of age 77% infants made a complete recovery, and by 1 year of age an additional 20% had recovered completely. Only 3% of infants had residual longer-term neurological deficits.
Predictors of a longer course of recovery were the presence of shoulder dystocia (p < 0.04) and right-sided palsy (p < 0.02). Birth weight, neonatal head circumference, and sex were not correlated with outcome. Future reports of BPBP should differentiate between infants showing early recovery from those with true BPBP.

This study aimed to evaluate whether simple isometric exercises can maintain and improve the oral function [maximum occlusal force (MOF) and masticatory ability (MA)] and the masticatory muscle properties [masseter muscle thickness (MMT) and echo intensity (MMEI)] in older adults during the maintenance phase of removable prosthetic treatment. Participants were randomly categorized into the intervention and control groups. The mouthpieces were distributed, and participants were instructed to use them for exercising. The intervention group was instructed to perform maximum clenching for 10 s, whereas the control group was instructed to tap the teeth at an arbitrary speed for 10 s. Both were repeated five times at an interval of 5 s between each activity and twice daily for 4 weeks. The outcomes were measured after a month of exercise. The intervention group showed a significant improvement in the MOF, MMT during contraction, MMT at rest and MMEI during contraction. There were no significant differences in the MA and MMEI at rest. In the control group, no improvement was observed in any of the parameters. Dormant cancer cells exhibited increased porphyrin metabolism and sensitivity to 5-aminolevulinic acid-based photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT). However, the metabolic changes in dormant cancer cells or the factors that enhance porphyrin metabolism have not been fully clarified. In this study, we revealed that lipid metabolism was increased in dormant cancer cells, leading to ALA-PDT sensitivity. We performed microarray analysis in non-dormant and dormant cancer cells and revealed that lipid metabolism was remarkably enhanced in dormant cancer cells. In addition, triacsin C, a potent inhibitor of acyl-CoA synthetases (ACSs), reduced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) accumulation and decreased ALA-PDT sensitivity. To investigate impacts of early postnatal macronutrient intakes on growth and body composition of preterm infants within the first 6 months.
One hundred and thirty-three very preterm (VPT) and/or very low birth weight (VLBW) infants were consecutively included. Enteral and parenteral macronutrient intakes during the first 28 days were recorded and average daily intakes were calculated. Growth was measured at birth, term age, and 6 months of corrected age (CA). Body composition was examined by air displacement plethysmograph at term age and 6 months of CA. Associations of nutrient intakes with growth and body composition over time were analyzed using generalized estimating equation.
After adjusting for covariates, higher daily protein, lipid, and energy intake during the first 28 days was associated with higher weight at term age for every 1 g/kg/day increment of protein and lipid intake, and every 10 kcal/kg/day increment of energy intake was associated with 0.50 (95% CI 0.04, 0.96), 0.29 (95% CI 0.07, 0.51), and 0.27 (95% CI 0.10, 0.44) higher weight z-score, respectively. Higher protein intake was associated with lower z-score of fat mass (FM, β = -1.88, 95% CI -3.53, -0.23) and percentage of body fat (PBF, β = -2.18, 95% CI -3.98, -0.39) at 6 months of CA, but higher lipid and carbohydrate intake was associated with higher FM and PBF z-scores at 6 months of CA.
