Tobacco addiction and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS; intrusive thoughts or impulses that cause distress and rituals) are both mediated by compulsivity and negative reinforcement. Little evidence exists to guide theory, research, treatment, and population-based prevention of this co-occurrence. AZD1080 We propose a conceptual model of OCS-smoking co-occurrence in which smokers with elevated OCS capitalize on smoking to assuage OCS. This secondary analysis examined associations between OCS levels and self-reported smoking motives that are model-concordant i) negative reinforcement-smoking for relief; ii) sensorimotor-benefits of behaviors and sensations of the tobacco self-administration ritual; and iii) habitual-smoking without conscious control. A community sample of cigarette smokers enrolled in a cessation trial (N = 458; 47.2% female; Mage = 36.9; SD = 13.6) completed pre-quit self-report measures of OCS levels and smoking motives. Regression models adjusted for sociodemographic covariates and non-OCS psychopathologies indicated that OCS level was positively associated with each model-concordant motive. OCS level was also correlated with tobacco dependence severity and greater withdrawal symptom severity experienced during previous quit attempts. Those with higher OCS report greater motivation to smoke for negative reinforcement, sensorimotor behavioral-ritualistic, habit/automaticity, and stimulation reasons. Further examination of the proposed model of OCS-smoking co-occurrence is warranted to guide theory and intervention for this population.A potential link between mortality, D-dimer values and a prothrombotic syndrome has been reported in patients with COVID-19 infection. The National Institute for Public Health of the Netherlands asked a group of Radiology and Vascular Medicine experts to provide guidance for the imaging workup and treatment of these important complications. This report summarizes evidence for thromboembolic disease, potential diagnostic and preventive actions as well as recommendations for patients with COVID-19 infection.Prior work has often shown higher memory for impressions of valenced verbal cues when such valence is congruent with valence conveyed by actors' facial characteristics. The current work examined specific valence contributions to appearance-congruent memory advantages. Untrustworthy and trustworthy faces were paired with positive, negative, and neutral behaviours (Study 1) and traits (Study 2). Negative versus positive trust-related behaviours are more highly diagnostic and weigh more heavily into impressions, suggesting that impressions of negative behaviours should also be more memorable. Consistent with this possibility, an appearance-congruity advantage for memory of impressions formed from behaviours was larger for untrustworthy versus trustworthy faces after correcting for appearance-congruent response biases (Study 1). When forming impressions from traits, verbal cues less contextualised than behaviours, a larger appearance-congruity advantage in impression memory for untrustworthy versus trustworthy faces could be attributed to appearance-congruent responding (Study 2). Across studies, more extremely valenced impressions were better remembered than more neutral impressions regardless of facial trustworthiness. True appearance-congruity advantages in impression memory may thus be larger for untrustworthy faces when verbal cues can be more contextualised. Further, forming impressions of more extremely valenced verbal cues may enhance impression memory regardless of whether cues are incongruent with facial characteristics.Guided bone regeneration refers to the process in which bone defects could be regenerated by facilitated healing through the use of membranes, potentially with the delivery of osteoinductive molecules, however, the regeneration often failed due to inflammation during bone formation. In this study, we developed a membrane immobilized with lactoferrin to modulate both bone regeneration and inflammatory responses. Lactoferrin was immobilized on electrospun nanofibers (LF50) by exploiting an adhesive polydopamine coating method. When human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) were seeded onto the nanofibers, the LF50 significantly increased the osteogenic differentiation. For example, the gene expression of osteopontin was 6.9 ± 2.3 times greater in the cells on LF50 than the cells on unmodified nanofibers without lactoferrin. In addition, the gene expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) of the macrophage cell line (RAW264.7) cultured on the LF50 was 0.3 ± 0.1 times reduced, indicating the lactoferrin wah osteoinduction and anti-inflammation. The lactoferrin-immobilized fibers demonstrated significantly enhanced in vitro osteogenic differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells as well as decreased polarization of macrophage to M1 with relatively reduced amount than that reported from previous reports. We also found that the membrane improved in vivo bone regeneration and decreased inflammatory tissue formation. Taken together, this system would be a new platform for successful bone regeneration.Sharp eyespot, caused by Rhizoctonia cerealis, has become one of the most severe diseases affecting global wheat production in recent decades. Quick and efficient screening methods are required to accelerate the development of cultivars for sharp eyespot resistance in wheat breeding. Here, a two-step colonized wheat kernels (TSCWK) method for the inoculation and classification of sharp eyespot resistance in seedlings was established in a greenhouse. After preliminary verification of the reliability of the method in two replicates, 196 wheat cultivars were assessed for sharp eyespot resistance, and significant correlations were identified among the four replicates (r = 0.78 to 0.84; P less then 0.01). Furthermore, the 196 cultivars were scored for sharp eyespot resistance at the milk-ripe stage using traditional toothpick inoculation in the field. Correlation and linear regression analysis showed that the application of this approach at the seedling stage showed good consistency with the traditional field method.
