Interestingly, the trail pheromone and not the surrounding terrestrial cues mediate use of these distinct vectors, as fan foragers briefly exposed to the pheromone cues of the column in isolation altered their paths to a combination of the fan and column vectors. The pheromone acts as a contextual cue triggering both the retrieval of the column-vector memory and its integration with the forager's current fan-vector.Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prolonged discomforts suffered by people who have had cancer. Seventy-eight to ninety-six percent of cancer patients experience fatigue, especially while undergoing treatment. CRF is related to insomnia, anxiety, depression, and also varies depending on age. However, little is known about the factors contributing to CRF and better understanding of determinants of CRF makes it easier to identify early patients at risk and in designing intervention planning. AM1241 The aim of this study was to assess the influence of precipitating factors (diagnosis of breast cancer and other clinical aspects) and perpetuating factors (social network, quality of life, mental disorders) on the presence of chronic fatigue in women from our cultural context, by social class each other determinants. METHODS It was carried out a mixed cohort study (prospective and retrospective) using a convenience sample of women diagnosed with breast cancer. The information sources were data from the Brief Fatigue Inventory questionnaire and hospital medical records. The dependent variable was fatigue and the independent variables were age, social class, time since diagnoses, cohabitation, comorbidity, relapse, body mass index, mental health (anxiety and depression), social network, social support, and quality of life. RESULTS Seventy-two percent of the women in the DAMA cohort reported moderate to severe fatigue. Risk of suffering from severe fatigue was greatest among individuals with low social class, those aged under 50 years, those with chronic disorders who had relapsed, and those with symptoms of anxiety and depression. In our study, CRF did not appear to be related to the stage of the cancer at diagnosis, or to the time since diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS CRF is an element that the professionals responsible for the control and monitoring of women should take into account as another element to be taken into consideration.INTRODUCTION Voice problems are common following radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer. Few studies exist covering the effect of voice rehabilitation, and no previous studies exist regarding the cost of said rehabilitation. This randomized controlled study aimed to analyze the cost-effectiveness of voice rehabilitation after radiotherapy for patients with laryngeal cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 66 patients with laryngeal cancer with follow-up data 12 months post-radiotherapy were included. Patients were randomized into receiving either voice rehabilitation (n = 32) or no voice rehabilitation (n = 34). The patient outcome was measured as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). The index range between 0 and 1, where 0 equals death and 1 represents perfect health. The QALYs were assessed with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire QLQ-C30 mapped to EuroQoL 5 Dimension values. The cost of rehabilitation and other healthcare visits was derived from hospital systems. The patper gained QALY, which is just above the threshold of the maximum willingness to pay level.Management of hospitalised osteoporotic vertebral fracture patients was explored across all major trauma orthopaedic hospitals in Ireland. Findings, based on a survey of orthopaedic doctors and physiotherapists, indicate a lack of standardised clinical care pathways. This study will inform development of clinical audit mechanisms and health service development for this large and growing fracture population in both Ireland and internationally. PURPOSE To explore the management of hospitalised vertebral fragility fracture (VFF) patients in Ireland. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of orthopaedic doctors (specialist registrar level) and physiotherapists was conducted across all hospitals with major orthopaedic trauma units in Ireland. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics in SPSS (V24). RESULTS Responses were achieved from 100% (n = 16) of the hospitals (42 individual physiotherapists and 47 orthopaedic doctors). Conservative management was usual with both orthopaedic doctors (n = 37, 79%) and physiothate to pain management, osteoporosis medication prescription, clarity on indications for bracing and a lack of fracture liaison services. Clinical guidelines, defined clinical care pathways and high-quality clinical research trials are required for VFF management. This study reported that the transitional zones in older adults were enlarged at the expense of the compact-appearing cortex with a greater porosity in all cortical sub-compartments. The magnitude of differences in areal and volumetric bone mineral density (aBMD, vBMD) between older and younger groups was similar. INTRODUCTION Aging is strongly associated with bone loss, but little is known about magnitudes of differences in bone microarchitectures, aBMD, and vBMD from peak bone mass (PBM) to senescence. We aimed to describe differences in aBMD, vBMD, and bone microarchitecture parameters at the distal radius between older and young adults. METHODS We compared 201 participants, aged 62-89 years (female 47%) and 196 participants, aged 24-28 years (female 38%). Bone microarchitecture parameters at distal radius were measured using high-resolution peripheral computed tomography (HRpQCT). aBMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Unpaired t tests and chi-square tests were used to compare differences in means and proportions as appropriate. RESULTS Older adults had thinner compact-appearing cortices with larger (cross-sectional area outer 30.96 mm2 vs. 28.38 mm2, inner 36.34 mm2 vs. 32.93 mm2) and thicker (outer 0.57 mm vs. 0.54 mm, inner 0.71 mm vs. 0.65 mm) transitional zones compared with young adults (all p less then 0.05). Cortical porosity was modestly higher in older adults than in young adults (54% vs. 49%, p less then 0.001). The magnitude of the difference in hip aBMD between older and young adults was slightly lower than of total radial vBMD (- 0.51 SD vs. - 0.78 SD). CONCLUSION Compared with young adults at the time of PBM, the transitional zones in older adults were enlarged at the expense of the compact-appearing cortex with a greater porosity in all cortical sub-compartments. The similar SD differences in aBMD and vBMD between older and younger groups suggest that the differences in bone area are not leading to major artefactual change in aBMD.
