Four horses were withdrawn from the study after 50% of evaluations because of metacarpal conditions associated with training. Thermographic examination revealed changes before the clinical manifestation of these conditions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that infrared thermography is an image technique that can facilitate understanding of musculoskeletal system modifications to race training and should be further investigated as a predictive tool to anticipate the occurrence of lesions. Metacarpal tendon diseases are important problems that may cause a decrease in performance and even may finish sport life in equine athletes. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the ratio of return to races and the time of staying away from races and also to detect the prognostic value of ultrasonographic findings in Thoroughbred and Arabian racehorses with metacarpal flexor tendon injury or peritendonitis. Of 120 cases, 84 (70.0%) returned to races. Among these, 82.1% had tendonitis (69/84) and 17.9% peritendonitis (15/84). Among the cases being unable to return to races, 91.7% had tendonitis (33/36), and 8.3% had peritendonitis (3/36). Although not statistically significant (P > .05), tendonitis cases were found to be away from races for longer periods. Tendonitis cases (85.0%, 102/120) stayed away from races for an average of 39.9 months, whereas peritendonitis cases (15.0%, 18/120) stayed away from races for an average of 27.1 months. It was found that the ratio of return to races after injury was higher in cases without tendon thickening (86.7%, 26/30) than in cases with tendon thickening (64.4%, 58/90). A cross-sectional survey of randomly selected 694 smallholder farms was conducted in 40 villages in the north, east, and south areas of Western Liaoning Province and Eastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region between March and July, 2017. Foaling-related parameters were assessed such as the mean age at first foaling, foaling rate and foaling interval during 2014-2017. Surgical site infection (SSI) with multiresistant bacteria is an important cause of postoperative morbidity after laparotomy in horses. The objective of this study was to identify bacteria isolates and their antibiotic resistance patterns associated with the development of wound infection in horses after laparotomy. This is a retrospective case series. Medical records of horses that underwent ventral midline exploratory laparotomy in a four-year period at one equine hospital were reviewed. Results of microbiologic culture and susceptibility testing are described. The study group consisted of 183 (100%) horses that recovered from anesthesia after laparotomy. The prevalence of infection was 19% (24/124) after first surgery and 83% (19/23) after relaparotomy. The most common microbial isolates were bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae followed by Staphylococcus ssp., Enterococcus ssp., Streptococcus ssp., and Bacteroides ssp. Bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae showed the lowest resistance to amphenicols, cephalosporins, and quinolones groups of antibiotics. Coagulase-positive Staphylococci were sensitive to amphenicols and only 33% were resistant to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The most commonly used perioperative and postoperative antibiotics were gentamicin and amoxicillin. Limitations include poor control over exposure factors, covariates, and potential confounders during the surgery, recovery time, or period of hospitalization; relying on others for accurate outcome assessment and recordkeeping; lack of follow-up information once animals were discharged from the hospital. The aim of this report was to describe a case of a seven-day-old female neonate Quarter Horse presenting dysphagia, milk reflux through the nostrils and mouth, and expiratory dyspnea since 4 days. Thoracic auscultation was indicative of aspiration pneumonia. Diagnosis of DDSP associated with local inflammation was made after endoscopic examination of upper respiratory tract. Radiographic examination was performed to rule out hypoplasia of the epiglottis. No clinical improvement was observed after anti-inflammatory treatment with flunixin meglumine. Oral endoscopy under general anesthesia revealed that the displacement of the soft palate was caused by a persistent frenulum of the epiglottis. Using a 30° rigid endoscope and a curved laparoscopic scissors, the frenulum was transected. After surgery, no dysphagia or dyspnea at rest was observed. However, discreet respiratory noise persisted during exercise for 5 days postoperatively. After discharge, the owner reported that the animal was completely normal during exercise. The animal is currently 3 years old and is developing a normal athletic performance. Persistent frenulum of the epiglottis should be considered while examining neonates with nasal milk reflux associated with expiratory dyspnea. This case report emphasizes the importance of the differential diagnosis for DDSP and for DDSP secondary to the persistent frenulum of the epiglottis in neonatal foals. It also underlines the importance of oral endoscopic examination for diagnosis.
