The Event Mean Concentration (EMC) is considered as a key analytical parameter for assessing the quality of stormwater. The conventional estimation methods to determine EMC do not necessarily address the variability associated with the hydrologic characteristics. Accordingly, this study was conducted to identify the potential hydrologic variables that can influence EMC and thereby to create a mathematical model to determine EMC using the hydrologic variables while incorporating the catchment as an influential factor. This paper introduces an innovative approach to estimate EMC of a runoff event using a stepwise multiple linear regression model. The model incorporates hydrologic variables together with their two-way interaction terms. The catchment was included in the model as a dummy variable. This allows identifying the variability of EMC between catchments. Model can reasonably predict the EMC with an overall prediction error of 0.811. The regression coefficients of the model specify that, maximum rainfall intensity is the most influential variable having a coefficient of 1.008, followed by the average intensity with a coefficient -0.586. The interaction term of rainfall depth and the antecedent dry period indicates that for a relatively small rainfall event ( less then 5 mm), an optimum value of antecedent dry period exists that maximises the EMC. Subsequently, EMC was employed to define the first flush runoff as an alternative approach to the conventional approaches for determining the first flush. The dynamic mean concentration (DMCt), was introduced as a parameter for estimating the first flush using EMC. The maximum accumulated runoff volume such that, DMCt≥EMC was defined as the first flush runoff. It was found that residential catchments generate more intense first flush compared to catchments with totally impervious surface areas and thereby a significant pollutant load is transported within a small initial fraction of the runoff.f.This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of Electrokinetic Remediation to remove lead and zinc from real mine tailings, collected from the Lacan's lead and zinc Mineralized Flotation Processing Plant (Markazi province, Iran). High buffering capacity, high organic matter, and heavy metal contamination were the unique characteristics of this mine tailing. Electrokinetic remediation of the mine tailings was carried out in 11 separate experiments under constant voltage gradient of 2 V/cm for 9 days. PRI-724 Various enhancement techniques were tested, such as 1) electrolyte conditioning using chelating agents including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, citric acid, acetic acid, and hydrochloric acid; 2) increasing the concentration of the catholyte solution, and 3) adding chelating agents to the soil as a pre-treatment of the tailings and the electrolyte condoning simultaneously. The concentration of each electrolyte solution was selected based on the different extraction tests that resulted in the optimal or highest extraction percentage of lead and zinc. Electrolyte conditioning, in the case of using citric acid 1 M enhanced the removal of Pb and Zn dramatically. Catholyte conditioning, using citric acid 1 M, was the most effective enhancement technique for removing Zn (38.34%); also, the best removal efficiency of Pb (51.31%) was achieved using the same electrolyte solution in both electrode chambers. Increasing the acetic acid concentration was favorable for removal of both heavy metals. Compared to catholyte conditioning, pre-treatment coupled with catholyte conditioning could not improve the removal efficiency considerably.The reward history of a stimulus can yield strong attentional selection biases. Indeed, attentional capture can be triggered by previously rewarded items which are neither salient nor relevant for the ongoing task, even when selection is clearly counter-productive to actually obtain the reward outcome. Therefore, value-driven attentional capture (VDAC) has been argued to be an automatic attention mechanism. Our study aimed at putting the VDAC automaticity directly to the test. For this purpose, the Load Theory offers a comprehensive framework where distraction is observed under low but not high perceptual load condition. Nevertheless, if VDAC is indeed automatic, distraction by reward-stimuli should be observed on both perceptual load conditions. We used a feature vs. conjunction discrimination of a go/no-go cue to manipulate perceptual load. As expected, our results revealed that perceptual load decreased interference produced by low-reward distractor. However, this effect was not significant for high-reward distractor, giving support to VDAC automaticity. We discussed our results in light of the Load Theory literature and we strongly encourage to consider reward history along with perceptual load in determining attentional capture.The tendency to imitate the actions of others appears to be a fundamental aspect of human social interaction. Emotional expressions are a particularly salient form of social stimuli (Vuilleumier & Schwartz, 2001) but their relationship to imitative behaviour is currently unclear. In this paper we report the results of five studies which investigated the effect of a target's dynamic emotional stimuli on participants' tendency to respond compatibly to the target's actions. Experiment one examined the effect of dynamic emotional expressions on the automatic imitation of opening and closing hand movements. Experiment two used the same basic paradigm but added gaze direction as an additional factor. Experiment three investigated the effect of dynamic emotional expressions on compatibility responses to handshakes. Experiment four investigated whether dynamic emotional expressions modulated response to valenced social gestures. Finally, experiment five compared the effects of dynamic and static emotional expressions on participants' automatic imitation of finger lifting. Across all five studies we reliably elicited a compatibility effect however, none of the studies found a significant modulating effect of emotional expression. This null effect was also supported by a random effects meta-analysis and a series of Bayesian t-tests. Nevertheless, these results must be caveated by the fact that our studies had limited power to detect effect sizes below d = 0.4. We conclude by situating our findings within the literature, suggesting that the effect of emotional expressions on automatic imitation is, at best, minimal.
