Objectives In this study we sought to determine (1) adherence to each one of the dietary patterns (DPs) identified in Colombia by the National Nutrition Surveys (ENSIN) in 2010 and 2015; (2) trends in adherence to these patterns between 2010 and 2015; and (3) differences in adherence between the 2 surveys according to some of the biological and socioeconomic variables. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study with secondary analysis of data from the ENSIN-2010 and ENSIN-2015 surveys that enrolled 37,667 persons. Diet was assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Based on a factor analysis, 3 dietary patterns were identified traditional/starch pattern (TSP), fruit-vegetable/dairy pattern (FVDP), and snack pattern (SP). We used multiple linear regression to estimate adjusted differences in adherence to patterns between ENSIN-2010 and ENSIN-2015. Results For both years, adults had the lowest adherence to the 3 DPs. Between 2010 and 2015, the TSP pattern decreased for children, the FVDP remained the same for all age groups, and SP decreased for all age groups. Conclusion These findings can aid in designing, monitoring, and evaluating food education intervention strategies with a differential approach and an emphasis on the traditional Colombian dietary pattern, according to the life cycle stage.Objectives College students have high risk of anxiety and weight gain. Understanding how executive function traits, especially with trait anxiety, associates with weight-related behaviors could indicate strategies for improving obesity prevention programs. In this study, we examined links between weight-related behaviors of undergraduate students and executive function traits with and without high cognitive loads in the form of trait anxiety. Methods Participants (N = 406) completed an online survey assessing health, weight-related behaviors, executive function traits (cognitive self-control, concentration, and flexibility), and cognitive load (trait anxiety). Results K-means cluster analysis of executive function trait scales yielded 3 homogenous groups distinctly different from each other Cluster 1 had the lowest cognitive self-control and flexibility and moderate concentration traits, Cluster 2 had the lowest concentration and moderate self-control and flexibility traits, and Cluster 3 had the highest executive function traits. Clusters did not differ on BMI or physical health. Cluster 3 had better mental health, physical activity, sleep quality, and eating behaviors. Across clusters, those with high cognitive loads, as indicated by trait anxiety, had poorer mental health than those with low loads. High cognitive load in Clusters 2 and 3 adversely affected eating behaviors requiring cognitive concentration and self-control. Conclusions Future research should explore the feasibility of delivering executive control improvement activities and health education simultaneously.Objectives In this study, we examine young adult children's educational attainment as a mediator in the pathway from their mother's income to their fast food consumption. Methods The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 79 for Children and Young Adults (NLSY79 CY) were used to select mother and children dyads. A total of 5140 dyads were selected as the final sample. We used a mediation model to test mediators in the relationship between mother's income and young adult children's fast food consumption. Results Mother's income was significantly related to their young adult children's educational attainment. Mother's income was negatively related to fast food consumption. This study revealed partial mediation of the relationship between mother's income and their young adult children's fast food consumption via their young adult children's educational attainment. Conclusions A new perspective considering mother's economic resources is needed to understand children's education. Mother's income is important to cultivate their young adult children's health behaviors. this website The intergenerational transmission of mother's economic resources to their young adult children's educational attainment should be considered to understand young adults' fast food consumption.Objective The objective of this research was to determine the school and community characteristics associated with milk and milk alternative (MMA) consumption by Canadian youth. Methods We analyzed self-reported data from 50,058 Canadian students participating in the 2017-2018 wave of the COMPASS survey. We used logistic and linear regression analyses to identify school- and community-level factors associated with students meeting the MMA guidelines, and factors associated with daily number of MMA servings consumed, respectively. Results Student-level factors were more strongly associated with MMA consumption than school- and community-level factors. Students who attended schools that provided staff with nutrition training consumed fewer daily servings of MMAs and were less likely to meet MMA guidelines. Students attending schools that received healthy eating grants were more likely to meet MMA guidelines, whereas students attending schools that sold flavored milk in their vending machines were less likely to meet MMA guidelines. Conclusion Our findings suggest that student-level factors have a stronger association with MMA consumption than school or community factors. Additional research is needed to understand how factors associated with MMA consumption may influence behaviours over time, and how changes to Canada's food guide may impact youth eating habits.Objectives About 65%-87% of substance use disorder patients smoke cigarettes, compared to 14% of the general adult population. Few substance use treatment centers (SUTCs) have comprehensive tobacco-free workplace (TFW) policies or offer tobacco interventions. Taking Texas Tobacco Free (TTTF) implements an evidence-based TFW program in SUTCs, including at the Billy T. Cattan Recovery Outreach Center (BTC). We present a mixed methods case study of BTC's TTTF implementation, success factors, and challenges. Methods TTTF provided policy development assistance, training, treatment resources, and technical assistance over ∼9 months. Implementation was tailored using mixed methods. Quantitative data included surveys to stakeholders (Nmax = 7), a pre- and post-training questionnaire assessing knowledge gain, and reported quantities of tobacco use assessments (TUAs) administered and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) provided. Qualitative data included stakeholder focus groups and interviews (18 participants). Results All employees reported TFW policy compliance.
