When this Special Issue was launched, we cast the net widely in terms of the subject matter we considered suitable for the papers. Three papers [...].Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is currently treated with inhibitors of the CML specific oncoprotein, bcr-abl. While this strategy is initially successful, drug resistance can become a problem. Therefore, new targets need to be identified to ensure the disease can be appropriately managed. The thioredoxin (Trx) system, comprised of Trx, thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), and NADPH, is an antioxidant system previously identified as a target for therapies aimed at overcoming drug resistance in other cancers. We assessed the effectiveness of TrxR inhibitors on drug resistant CML cells and examined links between TrxR and the bcr-abl cell-signalling pathway. Two TrxR inhibitors, auranofin and [Au(d2pype)2]Cl, increased intracellular ROS levels and elicited apoptosis in both sensitive and imatinib resistant CML cells. Inhibition of TrxR activity by these pharmacological inhibitors, or by specific siRNA, also resulted in decreased bcr-abl mRNA and protein levels, and lower bcr-abl downstream signalling activity, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of TrxR inhibitors as CML therapies. In addition, imatinib resistant CML cell lines showed upregulated expression of the Trx system. Furthermore, analysis of datasets showed that CML patients who did not respond to imatinib had higher Trx mRNA levels than patients who responded to treatment. Our study demonstrates a link between the Trx system and the bcr-abl protein and highlights the therapeutic potential of targeting the Trx system to improve CML patients' outcomes.Applying Software Engineering (SE) processes is vital to critical and complex systems including security and networking systems. Nowadays, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and their applications are found in many military and civilian systems which make them attractive to security attackers. The increasing risks and system vulnerabilities of WSNs have encouraged researchers and developers to propose many security solutions including software-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). The main drawbacks of current IDSs are due to the lack of clear, structured software development processes. Unfortunately, a substantial gap has been observed between WSN and SE research communities. Integrating SE and WSNs is an emerging topic that will be expanded as technology evolves and spreads in all life aspects. Consequently, this paper highlighted the importance of Requirement Engineering, Software Design, and Testing when developing IDSs for WSNs. Three software IDS designs were proposed in this study Scheduling, Broadcast, and Watchdog designs. The three designs were compared in terms of consumed energy and network lifetime. Although the same IDS approach was used, but, by highlighting the design phase and implementing different designs, the network lifetime was increased by 73.6% and the consumed energy was reduced by 20% in some of the designs. This is a clear indication of how following a proper SE process could affect the performance of the IDS in WSN. Moreover, conclusions were drawn in regard to applying software engineering processes to IDSs to deliver the required functionalities, with respect to operational constraints, with an improved performance, accuracy and reliability.Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) is an increasingly high-valued niche vegetable crop among small organic growers in North Carolina, due to its increasing demand among diverse immigrant groups. Production is however hampered by insect pests such as the flea beetle (FB), Disonycha glabrata (Coleoptera Chrysomelidae), that cause significant yield reduction. Chemical insecticides are generally applied for pest control despite their known risks to health and the environment. Integrated pest management (IPM), which is a cost effective and environmentally friendly approach is still under-exploited in vegetable production by small growers. D. glabrata population was 60% higher in plots with mulch compared to plots without. Since their initial description and characterization, the field of cell penetrating peptides as vectors has exploded. The cargoes they can deliver range from other small peptides, full-length proteins, nucleic acids including RNA and DNA, liposomes, nanoparticles, and viral particles as well as radioisotopes and other fluorescent probes for imaging purposes. In this review, we will focus briefly on their history, classification system, and mechanism of transduction followed by a summary of the existing literature on use of CPPs as gene delivery vectors either in the form of modified viruses, plasmid DNA, small interfering RNA, oligonucleotides, full-length genes, DNA origami or peptide nucleic acids.We report the first occurrence of the orange spiny whitefly (Aleurocanthus spiniferus; OSW) on the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) in Bari, Apulia region, Italy. After our first observation in 2016, the infestation recurred regularly during the following years and expanded to the neighboring trees. Since then, we have also found the insect on numerous patches of the tree of heaven and other plant species in the Bari province. Nevertheless, the tree of heaven was not particularly threatened by the insect, so that a possible contribution by OSW for the control of such an invasive plant cannot be hypothesized hitherto. This work was also aimed at profiling the microbiome of OSW feeding on A. altissima. For this purpose, we used the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and the deep sequencing of small RNAs (sRNAs). Both techniques unveiled the presence of "Candidatus Portiera" (primary endosymbiont), Wolbachia sp. and Rickettsia sp., endosymbionts already reported for other Aleyrodidae. Deep sequencing data were analyzed by four computational pipelines in order to understand the reliability of the detection of fungi, bacteria, and viruses Kraken, Kaiju, Velvet, and VelvetOptimiser.
