The cholinergic system plays a key role in cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous acetylcholinesterase positron emission tomography imaging studies found memory, attention, and executive function correlates of global cortical cholinergic losses. Vesicular acetylcholine transporter positron emission tomography allows for more accurate topographic assessment of not only cortical but also subcortical cholinergic changes.

The objectiveof this study was to investigate the topographic relationship between cognitive functioning and regional cholinergic innervation in patients with PD.

A total of 86 nondemented patients with PD (mean ± SD age 67.8 ± 7.6 years, motor disease duration 5.8 ± 4.6 years), and 12 healthy control participants (age 67.8 ± 7.8 years) underwent cholinergic [

The z scores for each cognitive domain were determined using an age-matched, gender-mae-specific and aging effects. © 2020 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Our results confirm and expand on previous observations of cholinergic system involvement in cognitive functioning in PD. The topographic overlap across domains may reflect a partially shared cholinergic functionality underlying cognitive functioning, representing a combination of disease-specific and aging effects. © 2020 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

There is a well-established association between inpatient hyperglycaemia and mortality. Ifenprodil However, evidence is inconsistent regarding whether this association is differential among those with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Most studies are based on convenience samples or are unable to adjust for comorbidities. We examined whether the association between hyperglycaemia and 30-day mortality was modified by baseline glycaemic status.

This was a retrospective cohort study of 174,671 eligible hospitalized individuals between 2012 and 2015. Thirty-day mortality was assessed during the first inpatient stay up to 30 days post discharge. The adjusted association between hyperglycaemia and mortality was assessed with logistic regression models. Then, four interaction terms were entered into the model to assess if the association between hyperglycaemia and mortality differed by baseline glycaemic status.

The multivariate model demonstrated a 2.18-fold risk of mortality associated with hyperglycaemia (ohow hyperglycaemia control and proactive deterioration prevention throughout the entire inpatient stay may prevent adverse outcomes.

Nocturia, due to nocturnal polyuria and other conditions associated with nocturnal voiding, affects sleep quality and daytime quality of life (QOL). We aimed to investigate the relationship among nocturia, sleep quality, and daytime QOL in a young Japanese population.

This epidemiological study analyzed data from a retrospective data set containing sleep data from wearable devices worn by 9446 Japanese users and a prospective data set containing answers to a 10-item questionnaire completed by a subset of 605 users in the retrospective dataset. We recorded the first uninterrupted sleep period (FUSP), total sleep time (TST), number of nocturnal voids, sleep quality, daytime QOL, bothering nocturnal voids, and early wake-ups in the morning.

The subjects were 18-65 years old. The mean TST was 6.7 ± 0.9 h, and the mean number of wake-ups was 2.11 ± 1.1. FUSP and TST decreased (from 334 ± 114 to 173 ± 74 min and 5.9 ± 1.0 to 5.5 ± 1.0 h, respectively) with an increasing number of nocturnal voids, and the change was statistically significant. Logistic regression analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between nocturia and FUSP and the number of wake-ups.

Nocturia has close relationships with FUSP and the number of wake-ups and can result in decreased daytime QOL in young Japanese people.

Reported here is the synthesis of single-crystalline MgO(111) nanosheets by a two-step process involving the formation of ultrathin Mg(OH)2 nanosheets as a precursor, and their selective topotactic conversion upon heating under dynamic vacuum. The defect-rich surface displays terminal -OH groups, three-coordinated O2- sites and low-coordinated Mg2+ sites, as well as single electrons trapped at oxygen vacancies, which render the MgO nanosheets highly reactive, as evidenced by the activation of CO molecules at low temperatures and pressures with formation of strongly adsorbed red-shifted CO and coupling of CO molecules into C2 species. The complexity of homeless service users' characteristics and the contextual challenges faced by services can make the experience of working with people in homelessness stressful and can put providers' well-being at risk. In the current study, we investigated the association between service characteristics (i.e., the availability of training and supervision and the capability-fostering approach) and social service providers' work engagement and burnout. The study involved 497 social service providers working in homeless services in eight different European countries (62% women; mean age = 40.73, SD = 10.45) and was part of the Horizon 2020 European study "Homelessness as Unfairness (HOME_EU)." Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), findings showed that the availability of training and supervision were positively associated with providers' work engagement and negatively associated with burnout. However, results varied based on the perceived usefulness of the training and supervision provided within the service and the specific outcome considered. The most consistent finding was the association between the degree to which a service promotes users' capabilities and all the aspects of providers' well-being analyzed. Results are discussed in relation to their implications for how configuration of homeless services can promote social service providers' well-being and high-quality care.
