The objective was to examine the effects of supplementary quebracho on control of coccidiosis and gastrointestinal nematodes in lambs and kids. In Exp. 1, naturally infected lambs weaned (87.8 ± 0.4 days of age; day 0) in January (winter) were blocked by sex and randomly assigned (n = 10/treatment) to receive supplement with or without 100 g/lamb of quebracho for 28 days. In Exp. 2, single or twin rearing ewes were randomly assigned into two groups, and naturally infected lambs were fed control (n = 28) or quebracho (100 g/lamb of quebracho tannins in feed; n = 27) between -28 and 21 days (weaning = day 0; 70.8 ± 0.1 days of age). In Exp. 3, weaned doe kids (57.6 ± 2.0 days of age) were randomly assigned to receive alfalfa (Medicago sativa) supplement with (n = 9) or without (n = 8) 50 g/kid quebracho or sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) with quebracho (n = 8) for 21 days. Fecal oocyst count (FOC), nematode egg counts (FEC), fecal score, dag score (soiling around rear quarters), and blood packed cell volume (PCV) were determined every 7 days. Data were analyzed as repeated measures using mixed models. In Exp. 1, FOC decreased in quebracho-fed lambs (diet × time, P 0.10). Quebracho was effective in reducing FOC but not clinical signs of coccidiosis in both lambs and kids, and may not be highly digestible in lambs as it caused loose stools. We analyzed litter occurrence in 68 underwater video transects performed on the middle/outer continental shelf and submarine canyon off Cap de Creus (NW Mediterranean), an area recently declared Site of Community Importance (SCI). Low densities of urban litter were registered on the shelf (7.2 items ha-1), increasing in abundance towards the deepest part of the submarine canyon, with 188 items ha-1 below 1000 m depth. We hypothesize that the strong bottom currents that recurrently affect this area efficiently move litter objects from the shelf towards the deep. Of all litter items, approximately 50% had a fishing-related origin, mostly longlines entangled on rocks in the canyon head and discarded trawl nets in deeper areas. Over 10% of cold-water colonies observed had longlines entangled, indicating the harmful effects of such practices over benthic habitats. These results should be considered when designing mitigation measures to reduce litter pollution in Cap de Creus SCI.

The use of endoscopes in otologic procedures has been increasing worldwide. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of microscopic tympanoplasty (MT) and endoscopic tympanoplasty (ET) for tympanic membrane and middle ear surgery.

We retrospectively analyzed 81 patients who underwent MT (n=44) and ET (n=37) for chronic otitis media with tympanic membrane perforation performed by a single surgeon between January 2013 and September 2019. The hearing outcomes, graft success rate, complications, operation time and hospital stay, and cost-effectiveness were recorded and compared between groups. Hearing outcomes were determined by pure tone audiometry. Cost-effectiveness was determined by the operation cost and total cost.

There was no significant difference between the MT and ET groups regarding demographic characteristics, with the exception of the malefemale ratio. There was no significant difference in the pre- and postoperative air conduction, bone conduction thresholds, and air-bone gap values between the two groups, but a significant audiologic improvement was observed in both groups (p<0.05). In terms of recurrence of tympanic membrane perforation, postoperative otorrhea, and discomfort symptoms, there was no significant difference between groups (p>0.05). GDC-0084 The operation time and hospital stay were shorter in the ET group than in the MT group (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in operation cost between the two groups (p>0.05), but the total cost was significantly lower in the ET group than the MT group (p<0.05).

ET is as safe and medically efficacious as conventional MT, shortens the operation time and hospital stay, and is cost-effective.

To report a single institution's experience using human papillomavirus (HPV) E6/E7 mRNA in-situ hybridization (mRNA ISH) for HPV detection in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). To review the literature on HPV detection methods.

Retrospective chart review, literature review.

Tertiary care academic hospital.

We conducted a retrospective chart review of 122 OPSCC biopsy specimens. mRNA ISH was performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue with a pool of 18 high risk HPV probes using an automated stainer; p16 immunohistochemistry (IHC) was also performed. We conducted a literature review on HPV detection methods including p16 IHC, mRNA ISH, DNA ISH, and PCR.

In our cohort, mRNA ISH had a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 100% with reference to p16 (100% concordance). 2-year OS was 87.5% vs. 94.5% for p16/HPV-negative vs. positive patients. 2-year DFS was 60.0% vs. 84.2%. On literature review, mRNA ISH demonstrated consistently high sensitivity and specificity ranging from 88-98% and 90-100% respectively. In comparison, the specificity of p16 was 85-95%.

Our report supports the use of mRNA ISH for HPV detection in OPSCC and validates its feasibility using automated tissue staining methods on FFPE tissue. Our findings and literature review support that mRNA ISH may have superior specificity and be easier to interpret than p16. Further study on the prognostic value and cost-effectiveness of mRNA ISH is warranted and may establish this HPV detection method as the "gold standard."
