The role of social support in the online setting is explored in this study. For this purpose, the posts of infertility treatment patients participating in an infertility treatment online support group between 2002 and 2016 were retrieved. Members who contributed at least 100 words were divided into two groups according to the treatment outcome they reported (pregnancy). The association between the length of group membership, type of support provided, intensity of interaction, active support seeking, overall sentiment and the amount of sadness, anxiety and anger words and the treatment outcome was examined. The findings suggest that online social, in particular emotional, support acts as a buffer between the stressor and the treatment outcome. The expression of anger and initiating of communication by new members diminish this relationship.

Acute toxicity caused by New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) has created a significant burden for Emergency Departments (EDs). Here we report characteristics of people presenting with toxicity after exposure to the synthetic cathinone

-ethylpentylone (NEP).

Adults presenting to hospital with severe acute toxicity after suspected NPS use were recruited between March 2015 and October 2020. Clinical features were recorded using consistent methodology and biological samples analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass-spectrometry.

NEP was detected in at least one sample from 9 of 893 patients recruited during the period of study, all presenting between 2016 and 2019 and 8 presenting in southern England. Commonly reported clinical features included tachycardia (6), agitation (6), confusion (6), mydriasis (5), hallucinations (4), acidosis (3) and elevated creatine kinase (3). Co-used drugs, detected in 6 patients, may have contributed to these features, but agitation and hallucinations were also reported in all 3 patients without analytical evidence of co-use.

NEP was detected infrequently in episodes of drug toxicity in the UK between 2016 and 2019, especially in southern England. Clinical characteristics of toxicity are similar to those of other cathinones, although co-use of other drugs is common and may contribute to the features observed.

In 2019, the El Paso Independent School District launched an initiative to close several schools due to low enrollment, forcing students in Barrio Chamizal to relocate to Frederick Douglass Elementary, which borders a designated industrial zone and is surrounded by two major recycling plants. In response, Familias Unidas has organized to reverse the decision and call attention to the discriminatory practices of the school district. We take the public advocacy efforts of Familias Unidas as an instrumental case study to trace the intersections of health communication, Latinx communication, and environmental racism along the U.S.-Mexico border. Utilizing an intersectional borderlands health communication approach, we draw on publicly available texts to trace the argumentative strategies employed by Familias Unidas to mobilize community members. Familias Unidas rhetorically constructs a public health crisis in the borderlands by connecting the school closures to larger coalitional struggles concerning the environment, citizenship, race/ethnicity, language, and class. We identify three rhetorical strategies - familia, comunidad, and (in)justicia - employed by Familias Unidas to shape their public argument(s).

As the COVID-19 pandemic has grown internationally, there has been an increased need for volunteers. This study aimed to identify the predictors of volunteering including demographic backgrounds, socio-economic characteristics, personality, and psychosocial factors.

Data were analysed from 31,890 adults in the UK COVID-19 Social Study run by the University College London - a longitudinal study focusing on the psychological and social experiences of adults living in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. CPI-613 Tetrachoric factor analysis was applied to identify latent categories of voluntary work. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identity predictors for volunteering and change in volunteering behaviours since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three types of volunteering during the pandemic were identified as follows formal volunteering, social action volunteering, and neighbourhood volunteering. Regression analysis showed that the pattern of voluntary work was structured by demographic backgrounds, socio-economic factors, personality, and psychosocial factors.

The predictors of volunteering during the pandemic may be slightly different from other non-emergency period.

Some argue, however, that Americans' scientific literacy is contingent on subcultural conflict, showing differences in scientific literacy that emerge only on religiously contested scientific claims. Building on these insights, we find that the most salient factor explaining Americans' divergence on contested (though not on uncontested) scientific claims is not religious commitment or conservatism per se, but an ideology that seeks political-and consequently epistemic-dominance Christian nationalism. National data show that Christian nationalism is unassociated with Americans' answers on questions about uncontested scientific knowledge. However, Christian nationalism is the strongest predictor of incorrect answers on questions about religiously contested scientific claims. Contemporary "culture war" debates over science have little to do with outright ignorance of science, nor are they strictly about religiosity or theological conservatism.
